Susan Marie (Brown) Brier - July 17, 1960 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Saint Albans)
Obituary Preview: Susan Marie (Brown) Brier passed away unexpectedly at the University of Vermont Medical Center on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, after an incredibly brief and courageous battle with esophageal cancer...a battle that was, in her own words, “fast and furious”. She was surrounded by loved ones and passed peacefully just before the sun rose, sending streaks of purple through the morning sky. She was just 63 years old.
Sue was born in St. Albans on July 17, 1960, to Lucille (Aldrich) and Curtis E. Brown. She attended St. Albans Town Elementary School and Bellows Free Academy. She was confirmed as a member of Holy Angels Parish and was a life member of the VFW Post 758 Auxiliary.
Sue was a lifelong homemaker and a woman of many talents. When the kids were young, she created many Halloween costumes, from a tinfoil robot to all the California Raisins. She crocheted afghans, had a green thumb for spider plants and African violets, and made whoopie pies from scratch. Sue was an excellent cook and was especially known for her delicious Thanksgiving turkey and roasted chickens. For many years, she created beautiful homemade cakes for birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings (including her own wedding cake). In later years, she discovered a love of container gardening and would spend hours carefully planting and caring for an astonishing bounty of summer veggies, with tomato plants that often grew to heights over her head.
Sue loved the simple things in life: fishing at the bay, driving around to look at lights on Christmas Eve, and any event that would bring her to Belvidere. She loved the gatherings with her extended family and always looked forward to being at the ballfield.
Most of all, Sue loved her family. She had such pride in all of her children as they embarked on adventures and was grateful for technology that allowed her to stay connected when distance got in the way. She was a devoted wife to Dickie, celebrating 19 loving years of marriage this January. And of course, one of her greatest joys was being Nana for her grandchildren (and all the grand puppies), who she loved so very much. We will all miss her tremendously.
Sue is survived by her husband Richard "Dickie" Brier of St. Albans; her children: Linda Horner & Tom Townsend, of Fairfax; James Martin Jr., of Hinesburg; Jedidiah & Ashley Martin, of Riverside, CA; and Joseph Martin, of St. Albans; and her grandchildren: Madison O'Hartigan and Declan Martin.
She is also survived by her siblings: Allan & Christine Brown, of St. Albans; Curtis A. Brown, of St. Albans; Dayton Brown, Sr., of Franklin; Gary Brown & Ronetta Bushey, of Berkshire; and Cynthia Brown, of St. Albans.
Her nieces & nephews: Paul & Tara Talley, of Bakersfield; Daniel, Jr. & Julie Martell, of St. Albans; Michelle & Thierry Wiss, of Windsor & France; Crystal & Tom Lavoie, of Warwick, RI; Sebastian & Patricia Brown, of Newport; Amberly Brown & Michael Martin of St. Louis, MO; Dayton Jr. & Heather Brown, of Fairfax; Ryan Brown & Krystal Kelley, of Milton; Clarisse Talley, of Bakersfield; Joshlyn Ovitt, of Meridan, CT; Amy Chauvin, of St. Albans; Heidi Chauvin & Johnathan Bushee, of Bakersfield; Dylan Martell, of St. Albans; Curtis Allan Brown, of Swanton; Lucas Paradee, of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Connor Brown, of St. Albans.
Her aunts & uncles: Dorothy Dussault, of St. Albans; Joan Pauley, of Concord, NC; John Aldrich, of Hagerstown, MD; Shirley Abell, of Concord, NC; and many dear cousins.
She is predeceased by her parents, Curtis & Lucille Brown; her daughter, Kristina Irene O'Dell; her sister, Laura Lee Talley; her sister-in-law, Sandra Brown; her brother-in-law, Daniel Martell, Sr.; her great-nephew, Bradley Brown; and several aunts and uncles.

Bryce Clarke Elliott - November 18, 1935 - April 01, 2024

Departed: 04/01/2024 (Saint Albans)
Obituary Preview: Bryce Clarke Elliott of Barton VT passed away April 1, 2024 at the home of his family in St. Albans Vt. He was born on November 18, 1935, he was 88 years old. He was the son of Clayton Clarke Elliott and Edna Alma Rowell; he was born at home in West Glover VT. His early years were spent on the shores of Shadow Lake.
Bryce grew up on dairy farms in Orleans County with two brothers and two sisters. He graduated from Barton Academy in 1953. He attended UVM where he received his Bachelor’s Degree and also his Master’s Degree. He was married to Jan Elizabeth Stryker January 2,1960 and they had three children: Heather, Clarke and Clayton. They were married for 31 years until her death in 1992.
After college they came home to the family farm for a couple of years, then he had the opportunity to work for the University of Vermont and they moved to Middlebury on the Morgan Horse Farm. Two years later his love of farming brought him to renting a farm in Hinesburg, while still working for the University.
Another two years later he went back to farming full time in partnership with a friend. They purchased a farm in St. Albans Bay and increased their registered Jersey herd. Three years later in 1971 they sold the farm in St. Albans and moved back to the family farm in Barton. During the winter of 1972 their house burnt and that summer they rebuilt up on the hill. He and his father did much of the work on the inside of the house after hiring someone to build the outside, as with farm chores and haying he did not have enough time to do both.
During the 1980’s he was instrumental in starting the Top of Vermont Jersey Club to help promote the Jersey breed. They held annual sales for 10 years of which he was the sale manager and a driving force to keep the sale going.
Bryce was a steward of the land receiving many conservation awards over the years. He continued farming with Jerseys until 1993 when there was a complete herd dispersal. He continued to farm the land and board animals. He diversified his operation with haying, maple sugaring, fruit trees, and raising vegetables with a farm stand in his old milk house.
Bryce was active in 4-H as a youngster and showed Jersey’s at the local fairs. While raising his family he was leader of the Windy Hill 4-H club. The club did dairy projects, gardening and forestry as he passed on his expertise to many youth in the community. He attended Coutts-Moriarty as did his children and grandchildren. He was a director at the camp and spent many volunteer hours there getting ready for the summers. The family showed Jerseys at local Vermont fairs and Eastern States in MA. He was also active in the Vermont Jersey Club serving on committees and receiving several awards.
Bryce served on the Orleans County Farm Bureau board as vice president and president. He was involved with many projects at the Orleans County Fair, volunteering to help build dairy youth buildings and a milking parlor on the fair grounds. He was a great believer in promoting the small scale dairy and involving the youth.
He was a member of the Barton United Church and was a Deacon along with serving on many committees for the church. He served as director on the Lake Region Union High School board for several years and as selectman for the town of Barton. “I am most thankful in my life for my parents who devoted their life caring for us: Dean, me, Ralph, Alice and Anne. Giving us real parental care, working harder than you would believe and supported us if we took the road less traveled. And my three children and their families who got their mother Jan’s good points and a few of mine. I am also thankful for a chance to live in VT during the last true era of the small farm before the state government thought they could do better, {they still do} and before diesel, gas and combustible engines changed everything.”
Preceding him in death are his parents, wife Jan S. Elliott and sister Alice B Cross.
Survivors include daughter Heather Jan Brigham [Jack], B. Clarke Elliott Jr [Jennifer] and Clayton William Elliott [Jane]. Grandchildren: Constance Anne Brigham, William Elliott Brigham, Elijah John Brigham, Nathaniel Holyoke Brigham, Haley Elizabeth Elliott and Chase Maxwell Elliott; Brothers Dean R. Elliott [Jackie] and Ralph G. Elliott [Muriel] and Sister Anne L. Stryker [Barry] and Brother-in-law Warren Cross; many nieces, nephews and cousins and partner in later life Donnalee Burnside.

Melinda Arceneaux- Swearingen - May 28, 1947 - March 18, 2024

Departed: 03/18/2024 (Saint Albans)
Obituary Preview: Melinda Claire Arceneaux-Swearingen, age 76, passed away peacefully on March 18th, 2024, at her  home in Montgomery Center, Vermont. Her sons were by her side.
Born on May 28th, 1947, in Dallas, Texas, Melinda was the daughter of Ralph Early Areceneaux and Reba Oleta (Hill) Arceneaux. Because of her Father’s Air Force duties, the family moved several times during her early life, spending time in Madison, Wisconsin, Waco, Texas, and eventually settling in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1962.
Melinda graduated from Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1965. She attended Abilene Christian College for 3 years where she was a member of the GATA social club and was voted a school beauty. She earned a degree from Johnson State University in Vermont.
Melinda Married Rick Lee Wickman in 1968 in Taylor, Texas. She moved to Austin, Texas and worked at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library Archives at the University of Texas. It was while in Austin that Melinda’s passion for photography blossomed. While working at the archive Melinda began photographing political events and ceremonies held at the University as well as for various candidates for state office. This work earned her credits in Time, Newsweek, New York Times Magazine, and other publications. In the late 1960’s Melinda began photographing musicians in Austin’s thriving country music scene. She photographed Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Jerry Jeff Walker, Delbert McClinton, Marcia Ball, and countless other musicians during this time. Melinda photographed Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson extensively, providing album covers, concert photographs, and behind the
scenes pictures for them both. This work culminated with her pictures providing the visual backbone for Jan Reid’s 1974 book “The Improbable Rise of Redneck Rock.” Some of these photographs are currently on display at The Wittliff Collection at Texas State University. Melinda then began working as a still photographer for television and movies and has credits including The Blues Brothers, Robert Altman’s Popeye, Coal Miner’s Daughter, and many others. It was during this time that Melinda met Allan Frederick Nicholls. They traveled in Italy together and were married in 1980, eventually moving to Montreal where their two sons, John
Gordon Early Nicholls and Andrew Allan Arceneaux Nicholls were born.
Soon after Melinda’s sons were born they moved to Montgomery Center, Vermont where she found her house by the side of the road. Melinda was incredibly proud of her home, a sprawling, meticulously appointed Victorian house in the center of a charming town where she strove to be a friend to all. At this time Melinda took after her mother Reba and became a school librarian, first at Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, Vermont and then at Enosburg Falls High School in Enosburg Falls, Vermont.
In Montgomery Melinda met Edward Bruce Swearingen and they were married in July of 1993 and danced the night away to a jazz band playing on the porch after one of her epic 4th of July gatherings.
In Melinda’s retirement she enjoyed leading meditations at her community art center, traveling to England, curating the display of crystals in her healing space, hosting endless chats and talks either at her kitchen table or on her front porch with friends old and new alike, and spending time with her beloved grandchildren.
Most of all Melinda sought to bring beauty and love into the world. Whether it was her extensive art projects (she was a talented illustrator and calligrapher), making custom sewing projects for her grandkids, decorating the windows of her house with mandalas and mazes, or simply being and sharing her light with those around her, any space she inhabited was left with extra sparkle. Melinda was a gifted conversationalist and loved to share her extensive knowledge. She was feisty and strong willed. Her bright smile was infectious and even in her cantankerous moments she was charming and lovely. Melinda was generous, with her time, with her resources, and with her spirit. Melinda was preceded by her parents, her brother John Early Arceneaux, and her husband, Edward Swearingen. She is loved on this earth by her sons John Nicholls and Andrew Nicholls, her daughter-in-law Samantha Nicholls, her stepdaughter Tonya Kushner, her grandchildren: Ben Kushner, Henry Kushner, Beckett Nicholls, Everett Nicholls, Lillian Nicholls, and Alexander
Nicholls. She also has brightened the lives of countless extended family, loved ones, dear friends, and will be missed by her community of Montgomery.
A service in Melinda’s honor will be held at Pratt Hall, 2044 North Main Street in Montgomery Village on Saturday April 20th at 11:00 AM.
