Homer Compton - June 19, 1938 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Haysi)
Obituary Preview: Homer Compton
With a deeply broken heart and help from our Lord, we will try to write the obituary of our dearly loved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Born in Buchanan County on June 19, 1938 to Vince and Virgie Compton and passed from this earthly life at the age of 85 on April 23, 2024 to go to his forever home in Heaven.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Linda, 2 daughters, Teresa and Charlotte, 4 sisters, Dolly, Janice, Ruby, and Madlean, 1 brother, Bob, his son in law, Rick, and several brothers in law and 1 sister in law. Survivors include his brother, Harold, sister, Lucy, and daughter, Jennifer; 6 grandchildren, Jessica (Joey) Owens, Amanda (Chad) Conaway, Amber (Brandon) Ross, Jared (Kimberly) Owens, Cody (Jazmine) Yates, and Jeremy (Sarah) Yates and 18 great-grandchildren.
He married his beautiful wife, Linda Yates Compton on December 14, 1957 and had 3 wonderful daughters together, Teresa Ann, Jennifer, and Charlotte. Homer would often compliment Linda on her beautiful smile and their love for each other was noticable to anyone in their presence.
He worked as a mechanic and then in the coal mines until he retired. Homer was baptized and joined Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church on September 24, 1970. He loved his church and was faithful to go on Saturday and Sunday and he often visited sister churches and fellowshiped with other brothers and sisters any chance he had. On April 28, 1973 he was ordained as a deacon and served willing for His Lord and the church that he loved.
He loved spending time with his family when they would all gather at his home for a meal together. You were always greeted with love and a popscicle; especially for his great-grandbabies. He would visit regularly with his extended family and often travel with his brother Harold and try not to get into too much mischief.
He was a hard worker and always had a project to tinker with. He loved to make gadgets that helped him do chores or his projects easier. He was constantly working with his hands. He was a genuine example of what the apostle Paul spoke about in the scriptures: "That ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands..." 1 Thessalonians 4:11. He was able to fix anything that was broken and had an impressive way that he labeled and kept all of his tools in his garage. He faithfully watched NASCAR every Sunday that it came on, unless he was at church, and then he would record the races.
His presence in this world will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. We are grateful to have a Savior, Jesus Christ that made a way to our Father in Heaven and we will be reunited together with them all one day.

Departed: 04/16/2024 (Haysi)
Obituary Preview: Carter Lynn Harrison, age 69, passed away on Tuesday, April 16th, 2024 at his home on Road Branch following a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family and an immense amount
of love. Carter was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Lorrena Harrison, brother Timothy, in-laws Roy and Plina Deel, sister-in-law Mary Sue Rice, brother-in-law Barry Joe Rice, and nephew BJ Rice, and sister-in-law, Violet Harrison. He was also preceded in death by his
beloved cat of many years, Kahn. Dad is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy Harrison as well as his children: Tracy (Mark) Owens of Lick Creek, VA, Beth (David) Dixon of Lebanon, VA, and Brittany (Darrien) Stanley of Clintwood, VA. He is also survived by grandchildren Gena, Paige, Cassidy, Brad, Hunter, Michael, Elijah, Andrew, and Mary Catherine and great-grandchildren Holden, Eliza, Carter Blake, Greyson, and one on the way- Oakleigh whom Dad affectionately referred to as
“Ollie.” He is also survived by his two brothers, Smiddy Harrison, and Joey (Marsha) Harrison.
He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Dad was born on November 5th, 1954 at his childhood home on Road Branch. Road Branch is where he lived for the rest of his life with his loving wife, Kathy. During those years together, they were blessed with three children. Mom had told Dad that she would only have three kids, and if he didn’t get a boy, then so be it. They ended up raising three beautiful, head-strong girls. He was there for all the sports, band, and beauty pageants. It was the perfect
mixture of sequins and dirt. In 1996, he became a papaw for the first time then again in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2011, and 2012. He deeply loved being a papaw and enjoyed every single minute. He coached many of his children and grandchildren over the years whether it was on an actual organized team, or in the backyard at home. Having grandchildren once again brought back the mixture of dirt and sequins that started with his girls, but this time with the addition of black eyes and a little blood
here and there. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than anything. He was a 1973 Haysi High School graduate where he played football, basketball, and did track. Carter loved his Haysi Tigers and went to events for as long as Haysi existed. His
children and some of his grandchildren attend HHS and he attended many events with them. Carter supported his family as a coal miner for 30 years with his last place of employment being Cherokee Mine. He had worked on many other jobs during his life like working on what became Clinchco Elementary, which he helped build from the ground up. He also worked on the initial pouring of the foundation of the bridge at Fremont, and helped build
the gym at Sandlick Elementary. Dad was also a member of the McClure River Rescue Squad. To many people, he was affectionately known as “Coach Carter.” He coached football at Clinchco Elementary, Baseball at McClure, softball at Haysi, and Basketball at Sandlick. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, family cookouts, and roasting marshmallows with his grandchildren. He was a band-dad that could grill a mean burger that always made you want to come back for three more. He enjoyed finding and eating dryland fish and black raspberries, and loved to
share them with his grandkids. He enjoyed gardening, and he loved a good beagle dog. Dad joined the church and was baptized on the 4th Sunday of March in 2023. He was a member of Tivis Chapel Church. This made him glow with so much joy and you could tell he had found a peace like never before. The year that he shared fellowship in the Old Regular Baptist church was one of the happiest years of his life. Mom and Dad loved traveling to church on both
Saturday and Sundays. Dad was a hardworking member of the Haysi Kiwanis Club for 21 plus years. He truly enjoyed supporting the events, especially those that allowed him to help the children in the
community. He was a member of the 7170 chapter of United Miners. After Mom retired, they enjoyed every moment together whether it was going to a doctor's appointment, going to the gym, out to eat, or visiting grandkids. Dad was a man who was larger than life, and we know that his presence will be sorely missed not just by his family but by the entire community. We find comfort in knowing that he had joined the church and was looking forward to seeing his loved ones again in Heaven. We will miss him immensely until the
day that we see him again.

Kenneth Barry Looney - September 09, 1963 - March 20, 2024

Departed: 03/20/2024 (Haysi)
Obituary Preview: Kenneth “Kenny” Barry Looney, 60, of Birchleaf, VA, passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from complications with lung disease. Born September 9, 1963, in Tazewell County, VA, he was the son of Ruby Charles Looney and the late Charlie Mayford Looney. He was a graduate of Grundy High School.
Kenny married the love of his life, April Church, on January 1, 1988. Theirs was a marriage made in heaven, with both families praying for God to bring that special someone that he had planned for them. Kenny said he knew when he first saw April that he would like her to be his wife. He often spoke of how they loved each other each and every day, through the good times and the hard times. Their marriage also brought together both families in a special way. The families quickly became great friends, spending time together, supporting and praying for each other, and remain close to this day.
Kenny enjoyed spending time with his family. He often worked on projects with his sons, talking and sharing with them while they worked. He was a dearly loved Poppy to his grandkids, and he cherished his time spent with them. He loved sitting on the porch with family, talking, playing games, and laughing. He had a contagious laugh when he got tickled that made everyone around him join in. His many nieces and nephews loved spending time with their Uncle Kenny. He was known for his special blueberry pancakes, and even did highlights for the nieces’ hair.
He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, hunting ginseng with April, carpentry, four-wheeling, and time at the beach with April and his boys. He and the family particularly enjoyed a trip they took to Colorado, and always dreamed of going back.
Kenny was a hard worker and proud to be a coal miner, working most of his life in the mines. He was also a person of many talents. He could fix anything. He had businesses laying carpet and installing pools. He was very proud of the house remodel that he did with his sons. He had medical training, was a volunteer fire fighter, and worked together with April in the Haysi Rescue Squad, serving as Captain for several years. At the age of 16, he received his electrician certification in Buchanan County, the youngest person at the time to receive that award.
Kenny was generous with his time and resources. He would go out of his way to help anyone. He never knew a stranger. He knew his Bible and often quoted scripture to comfort and encourage others. He believed in the power of prayer.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. We rest in the peace of God that passes all understanding, that guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, knowing Kenny had given his heart to Jesus and had accepted God’s promise of forgiveness and salvation to all who receive Jesus as Savior. We know that his eternal home is in heaven.
