Obituary Preview: James David Thompkins was born on February 24, 1951 to Frank “Candy” Thompkins and Amerson Watkins Thompkins.  James, affectionately known as J.D. or Dee, was the youngest of eight children.  He confessed Christ at an early age at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Lisman, Al.  “Dee” graduated from Choctaw County Training School in 1969 and retired from Mid South Lumber, Inc.

Dee transitioned from this earthly life on April 9, 2022.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Amerson Thompkins, his sister, Carrie Dixon and his brothers, Riley Watkins and James “JB” Thompkins.

He leaves to cherish his memories, the love of his life Deborah Ann Thompson; his sons:  Omar, Christopher and James D. Thompkins, Jr.; stepchildren:  LaQuita, Breanna, Tramaine and Terrance Thompson; his brother:  Frank Thompkins; his sisters:  Mattie Mae Thompkins, Katherine Dodson and Jessie Baker.  He also leaves a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends, special nephew Clarence Crowell and his “best friend in the whole wide world” Jakeyse Thompson.

Obituary Preview: DeCarlos Tubbs was born February 12, 1976 to Mary Ann Tubbs.  He departed this earthly life for his heavenly home on March 29, 2022 at his home.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alex Chaney and Bettie Jean Chaney.

Carlos, as he was affectionately called, was involved in many things during his lifetime.  He worked numerous jobs including Advanced Auto, Choctaw County Dept. of Roads & Bridges, and Georgia Pacific.  He also served on the North Choctaw Water & Sewer Authority Board and the Choctaw County Parks and Recreation Board.  He also served as a volunteer with the Lisman Volunteer Fire Department.  Carlos was always lending a helping hand to his fellow man.  The position that he loved most was that of Deacon at Trinity Tabernacle of Faith Church in Lisman, AL where he served faithfully until his health began to fail.  He was devoted to his church family and served diligently in the church, not only as Deacon but also as a member of the Board of Directors for Trinity.

She joined the Mt. Mariah Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, and was a faithful and loyal member.  She held many positions in the church.  Mother Christine was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Brookins Chapter #166.

She was united in marriage to Lonnie Lee Johnson, and to the union five children were born.

She departed her earthly life on March 23, 2022 peacefully at her home.  Mother Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Lee Johnson; her daughters, Mary Catherine Irby and Jessie Ann Mitchell, and 5 siblings.

Obituary Preview: Tony Curtis Cunningham was born March 3, 1963 to Elmira Williams and the late Ulysses Williams.  He passed away peacefully at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, MS on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

Tony confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined Fairview Baptist Church in Mt. Sterling, Alabama.  He loved to read scriptures from the New Testament.

Tony was “a jack of all trades” his many talents and his willingness to help allowed him to do just about anything.  He worked many odd jobs such as carpentry, mechanical work, and at the saw mill.  He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and most of all, “DANCING”.

He was preceded in death by his father Ulysses Williams.

Henry confessed Christ at an early age and joined Butler Chapel AME Zion Church, where he remained faithful until death.  Henry served as a Sunday School Superintendent for numerous years.  He was also a member of the Steward Board and a choir member.

Henry departed this earthly life on February 14, 2022.

She attended Columbia University where she achieved a Masters Degree in Social Work. She was a Social Worker to her core. Helping people by providing information on education, employment, health services and politics was what she loved. Flora was an avid reader. The Democratic Committee and The Historical Society got a lot of Flora's time.

Flora's faith in the Lord was strong and steadfast. Reading the Bible and Praying was something she did daily.

To Cherish her memory, Flora leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; she will be missed most by her best friend George McKie.

Bernice Jones - March 16, 1935 - January 27, 2022

Obituary Preview: Bernice was born to proud parents Jasper Yates and Mabis Ezell Yates on March 16, 1935 in Cromwell Alabama. She had one sister (Ella). Bernice accepted Christ as her savior at a very early age with the Shiloh C.M.E. Church in Lisman Alabama. Bernice completed her education at Choctaw County Training High School in Lisman, Alabama. After finishing school, she married Quincey Venuard Jones and from this union their son Otto was born in December of 1954. In 1958 Bernice decided to leave the great state of Alabama to start a new life for herself and her son in Los Angeles, California where she met Willie (Bill) Black whom she later married. She worked numerous jobs in culinary arts. Over the coming years Bernice and her husband Bill opened a couple of restaurants in Los Angeles, one serving delicious soul food and the other serving bar-b-que. After many years of being self-employed Bernice decided to start a new career working for Norththrop Grumman until she retired in 1994.

Bernice departed this life on January 27, 2022 joining son; Otto Jones, mother; Mabis Ezell Yates, husband; Willie (Bill)Black, sister; Ella B Yates and Father; Jasper Yates all who preceded her in death. Leaving to cherish and preserve her memories with grandsons Quincy V. Jones, Phillip Chapman and a host of family and friends.

Bernice was a very loving and caring spirit. She was always willing to help anyone that was in need. She took care of her mother Mabis and sister Ella until their passing. She will be sadly missed for many years to come.

She was  preceded in death by her husband, Al Junior McRae; two sons, Alvin McRae and George McRae; five (5) sisters, Frances Gordon, Annie L. Moss, Ella P. Horn, Ida M. Spears, and Ruth Keeton; two (2) brothers, L.V. Gordon and Samuel Gordon.

In this union, they were blessed with seven children.  Four (4) girls, Ira Jean Cole, Las Vegas, Nevada; Pearlie Reed, Yantley, Alabama; Clora O’Field, Jachin, AL; Fannie (Ronny) Reed, Yantley, Alabama; two (2) sons, Ronnie (Callie) McRae, Yantley, Alabama; Sammie Holcombe, Cleveland, Ohio.  She was a loving grandmother with twenty (20) grandchildren, thirty-six (36) great-grandchildren, eleven (11) great-great grandchildren; three (3) brothers, R.D. Gordon, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Johnny Gordon, Birmingham, Alabama; Johnny Graham, Riderwood, Alabama; a devoted uncle and aunt who raised her, Roosevelt and Robin Gordon; along with a host of other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Obituary Preview: Carnell Keeton, the daughter of the late Will and Lucy Ruffin began life’s journey on November 8, 1944 in Pushmataha, AL.

At an early age, she confessed her life to Christ and joined Gilfield Missionary Baptist Church in Pushmataha, AL, where she served faithfully until her health declined.

Carnell started her work career at Choctaw General as a cook but later had a passion to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.  For over forty years she worked for what would later become Willow Trace Nursing Center until she retired.  After retirement she continued to care for people until her health declined because it was something that she truly loved doing.

Carnell united in holy matrimony to Willie James Keeton who preceded her in death.  She was also preceded by six brothers:  Alex, Willie Pleas, J.W., Joe Lee, and James Ray; and four sisters:  her twin sister Garnell, Maudine, Annie Sue, and Geraldine.

Carnell will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.  She leaves fond memories to be cherished by one brother:  Sanders Ruffin of Meridian, MS; one aunt:  Mary Curtis of Missouri; five sisters-in-law:  Sadie Ruffin of Whynot, MS, Clara Ruffin of Meridian, MS, Sarah West of Mobile, AL, Gloriastein Ruffin and Sarah Ruffin both of Illinois; one devoted niece:  Tina (Kenny) Mays of Butler, AL; one faithful friend, Jimmy Reed of Meridian, MS, and a large host of nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.

Sam Edward Ford - December 11, 1941 - January 02, 2022

Obituary Preview: The late Sam Edward Ford was born on December 11, 1941 to the late Elliott Ford, Sr. and Willie Deola Helms-Ford in Lavaca, Alabama in Choctaw County.

Sam was a resident of Lisman, Alabama.  He was granted eternal peace and comfort on Sunday, January 2, 2022 at Choctaw Health and Rehab facility.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Elliott Ford, Sr. and Willie D. Helms-Ford; his brothers, Bobby James Ford, Elliott Ford, Jr., and Henry “June” Ford.

Sam confessed Christ at an early age at Little Zion A.M.E. Zion Church in Lavaca, Alabama.

Sam graduated from Choctaw County Training School, Lisman, Alabama.  He served in the United States Army, where he retired after serving his country for 21 years.  While serving in the Army, he received several awards, such as: Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Bronze Star Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60” Device, (3) Overseas Service Bars, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, US Army Recruiter Badge, Vietnam Service Medal (2 Campaigns), Sharpshooter (Rifle M-14).  Sam was also a 64Z5H Transportation Senior Sergeant for 12 years and 10 months.

Sam moved back home after retiring from the military.  He owned and operated The Barbeque Pit in Butler, Alabama for a short stint.  He had a passion for cooking good food.  Sam was a loving person with a big heart, and he was a friend to everyone he knew.  He was always willing to help anyone in any way he could.  He was later employed at James River Corporation, Naheola, Alabama, where he retired as a supervisor.

Sam was married to Bessie L. Ford for 35 years.  They have one son, Christopher Sean Ford.

Juanita Crowell - January 21, 1941 - December 26, 2021

Obituary Preview: Juanita was born on January 21, 1941 in Toomsuba, Mississippi to the union the late Wonnie “Sonny Boy” Harris Sr, and Sallie Brewster Harris.  Juanita is one of sixteen children that was born to this union.  She was often referred to as “Sug” because of her sweet and kind disposition.

She completed her formal education at Lamar High School in 1957.  Shortly afterwards, in November 1960, she met her soul mate Otis Crowell and they were happily married for 39 years.  From this union, one child was born.

Juanita was a bright, confident, and versatile woman, who was not shy of assisting the community.  She fulfilled her late husband, Otis Crowell Sr.’s, position as Road Commissioner of Choctaw County District 2 for two years while being employed at Naheola Georgia Pacific Plant for 32 years and was able to retire in 2005.  Juanita also volunteered and held the position as a committee member for the Lisman Christmas and Annual MLK Day parades, dinners, as well as fundraising for Relay for Life and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Ezell Chapter 380.

Juanita, at an early age, confessed her hope in Christ and united with Little Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Toomsuba, Mississippi.  She later joined Greater First Missionary Baptist Church with her husband after relocating to Lisman, AL.  She was a faithful and devoted adherent member of the Greater First Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a Trustee, a matron, choir member and as Treasurer.  She loved to sing in the choir and did so with grace.  Her favorite song to lead was, “Going Up Yonder”.  Her studies, attendance, prayers, and service could only surface her true love for Jesus and how proud she was to be a child of God.

Juanita’s favorite pastime besides church was gardening.  Her home flourished with beautiful ferns, bushes of flowers and was always stocked with fresh vegetables.  The orange tree that bears “lemons” in her yard always kept people coming! Juanita was always a well-put-together woman.  Her stylishness and flair was some of the known characteristics of her.  She always kept her blonde hair, red nails, and makeup done and had an immense love for the finer things in life including glamorous home renovations.

On the early morning of December 26, 2021, after witnessing her favorite holiday once more, Juanita Crowell spread her wings and peacefully left this world with her family by her bedside.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Wonnie and Sallie Harris; spouse, Otis Crowell, Sr.; four sisters, Louise Harris, Annie Mae Liddell, Rosie Rodgers, Laurice Tanksley; seven brothers:  Wonnie Harris Jr., Stanley Harris, Eddie B. Smith, Eugene Smith, Kevin Harris, Jerry Harris, and Willie C. Yearell.

Her legacy lives on with her two sons, Odis (Shelita) Crowell Jr. of Butler, AL, Terry Curtis of Mobile, AL,; One Daughter, Francine Perryman of Mobile, AL; two granddaughters, Odyssey and Journey Crowell of Butler, AL; five sisters, Berniece Carter of Chicago, IL, Vera Wilson of Palmdale, CA, Emma Smith, Minister Cora Cole, and Ether Jean Davis all of Toomsuba, MS, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends that cherished her dearly.

Jackie Lee DeLoach was born May 27, 1953 in Riderwood, Alabama to the late Christine DeLoach and the late George Henry DeLoach Sr. Later on the late Isaiah Ruffin became a bonus dad to him.  He was raised by the late Fronnie Williams, his grandmother.  He stayed with is late grandparents Lee and Abbie Harbin.  He departed this life on December 20, 2021 at Choctaw Rehab.

He served in the National Guard for 27 years after serving those years he retired.  He worked for the County for 11 years while serving in the National Guard.  He worked for McElroy Truck Lines for 11 years until he had a wreck in March 2011.

Milton was educated in the Choctaw County Public School System, and later moved to New Orleans, Louisiana.  He later relocated back to Choctaw County to be with his family, and was a former employee of the Choctaw County Road and Bridge Department before becoming disabled.

He was preceded in death by three siblings: Beatrice Pringle-Goines, Wanda Mills and Vonnie McGrew; his maternal grandparents, Willie James Harbin and Sadie Harbin of Butler, Alabama; his paternal grandparents, Ezell Pringle, Sr. and Annie Ruth Pringle of Lisman, Alabama.

She met and married the late Marzine Traylor in 1948.  Of this union, three children were born:  Minnie, Ruby, and Willie (WC).  Her motherly instinct was strong as she played a huge part in raising her younger siblings as well as her own.

Classie moved to Miami, Florida in 1958 with her family.  She joined First Baptist Church Of Brownsville, where she actively and faithfully served on the Pastors Aid Board, President of the Mothers Board, Mission and other church auxiliaries.  Classie was employed by Geomo Dress Factory in Hialeah, FL where she sharpened her skills as a seamstress until the factory closed.  Being a self-taught seamstress, Classie brought her business home where she worked day and night making countless dresses, church robes, men and women suits, prom dresses, etc… to provide for her family.  She is a member of the Athalie Range Order Of The Eastern Star #145, where she served for over 30 years.

She retired from Hair Fashion East (Gwen Harshaw, owner) at the age of 89. She was also a member of the Tennessee Beautician Association, Beautician League Chapter #4, and the Top Ten Hairdresser’s Association for 50 years or more. Making people feel good about their appearance was a ministry for her.

Preceded in death by parents, Uncle and Aunt Theodore and Mahala Waters, sisters, Lottie Alexander. Elizabeth Townsend, and Bessie Clay, Grandson Obafemi (Oran) Awolowo, great grandson Napoleon Moore.

Obituary Preview: Marie Pringle Portis, the youngest of ten children, born to the late Oliver and Ora Mae Pringle on April 16, 1937, in Choctaw County Alabama.  She departed this life on November 1, 2021.

She joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at an early age and remained faithful until she was no longer able to serve.  Marie loved Pleasant Hill and the late Reverend Fred Chapman with all her soul and heart. This love was demonstrated by serving as the President of the Pastor Aid Club for many years.  During her tenure, she raised funds for the support of the Pastor by spearheading various fundraising projects and events. Her proudest moment was when she arranged a successful church trip to Detroit, Michigan in support of the Pastor.

Marie, also served as a loyal and devoted member of the Missionary Society and a devoted Deaconess of the Church. She took pride in serving as a Church Deaconess and wearing her white attire on the 1st Sunday of each month.

She was a Charter and active member of the Essencenette Social Club, a Community Service-Oriented Organization for over 25 years.  Her greatest passions were serving and helping others.  During election time, she worked faithfully at the polls and was an advocate in getting people registered to vote.  She loved to dress extremely nice, cook and entertain her church family, club members and friends.

After being employed with James River Corporation (Georgia Pacific) for thirty years, she made the decision to retire in 2001.  She was a hardworking and dedicated employee.  Over the years, she worked in several positions within the organization; however, the Lab Analyst position held prior to her retirement was her most favorite. Immediately after retirement, she began working with the Long-Term Disaster Recovery Organization. Working with this organization allowed Marie the opportunity to help people in the community receive better housing/mobile homes.  Marie graduated from Choctaw County Training School, Class of 1956.

She was married to the late Thomas James Portis (TJ) for 46 years.  Out of this union five children were born.  Thomas Earl Portis, Late James Thomas Portis, Ricky Portis, Lillie Portis Naylor, and Lee Marvin Portis. Andrea (Dre) Portis, grandchild was raised as their own.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Ora Mae Pringle, husband, Thomas James “TJ” Portis, son James Thomas Portis (“Terry”), nine siblings, Irene Spraggins, Essie Sturdivant, Helen White, Macie McRae, Elizabeth Prestige, Orzalee Benson, Oliver Pringle, Jr. (Lil Buddy), Aaron and David Pringle.

On November 26, 2006, he married Annie Mae Causey Washam.
