Mary Joan Pope - January 29, 1934 - October 17, 2017

Departed: 10/17/2017 (Florence)
Obituary Preview: Mary Joan Pope 83, of Penrose, Colorado, passed away in her home, October 17, 2017, after a debilitating hospital stay... She was born January 29, 1934 in Covington, KY to Thomas Robert and Norma Rose Warman. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, John H. Pope, Jr.; three sons, John, David, and Daniel; two daughters, Phyllis Walden and Rebecca Webb; 5 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Knapke and Jerry Warman. She is preceded in death by her father, mother, and daughter, Judy Sturgeon. As the oldest of three sisters, she helped her mom raise her two younger siblings while her Aunt Ceil, Uncle Rich, and cousin Mary Jewell were an important part of her young life... She started working at an early age to help support her family while still attending Catholic school. At the age of 15, she became the head wedding cake designer & baker at a bakery in Covington, Kentucky. After high school, she married the love of her life, raising a family of six while her husband’s career in the Air Force sent them on a new adventure every four years—Hawaii and Alaska being her two favorites. During parent-teacher conferences after they had moved from Hawaii to Florida, the teachers asked her, “Didn’t they teach your children anything in Hawaii?” And she replied, “Yes, they taught them to be happy.” She had a career in the Civil Service working a variety of challenging jobs; in her final position before retirement, they attempted to move her up to an administrative supervisor position in the hospital where she worked, and she told them, “No thanks, I’m happy with my job.” Some of the things that helped define who she was—were going to Mass with her husband for many years, praying, art and music, cooking and baking, traveling and being her husband’s co-pilot, reading several books a week, and a heartfelt passion for Christmas, family Sunday dinners, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and beloved family pets. She had an endearing habit of always trying to be as helpful (and never hurtful) as she could. She unconditionally loved her husband and family, and she gave everything of herself, everyday of her life... During her twilight years, her health and mobility declined from falls and hospital stays, yet with hard work, she was always able to make a recovery. A fall last year had kept her bedridden, yet she still maintained a positive outlook, learning to find pleasure in even the simplest things in life—afternoon coffee, mealtime, sunsets, moonlit nights, music, word puzzles, writing notes, her HD 8 tablet, reading her prayer book... Her caregiver stated, “She was so easy to care for, so appreciative, and such a joy to be around.” After a years worth of therapy and much hard work, she was excited about being just weeks away from being mobile again, when therapy re-fractured her leg, a setback she never recovered from.... Graveside services will be held at Our Lady of “the Assumption” Catholic Cemetery, Silver Cliff, CO, with Father John Farley presiding, Friday, November 10th, sometime after 1:00 PM. Flowers and condolences may be sent to Harwood Funeral Home, 225 E. Main Street, Florence, CO 81226.

Mary Isadora Lovato - February 04, 1920 - January 01, 2016

Departed: 01/01/2016 (Florence)
Obituary Preview: Mary Isadora Lovato, 95, of Florence joined her heavenly Father on January 1, 2016. She died peacefully and gracefully at home surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born on February 4, 1920 to Cleofus Trujillo and Manuel Valdez in Alamosa, Colorado. She was one of two children. Though her childhood was difficult due to poverty and the death of her mother at a young age, she demonstrated great strength, resilience, and wisdom beyond her years.  She carried these traits into adulthood and was always a steady rock for her family--a role model of strength, faith, and integrity.
During the summer of 1938, Mary met the love of her life, Frank Lovato.  They married six short weeks later on September 8, 1938 and were married for 66 years before Frank's passing. Their union was blessed with 9 children, 20 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren with another due soon, and 10 great-great grandchildren with 3 more on the way, as well as numerous step grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary's greatest love was her family and was happiest when surrounded by her large noisy clan. Their laughter was music to her ears.
Mary was an outgoing lady with a big, beautiful heart and a wonderful sense of humor.  She knew no strangers, could strike up a conversation with anyone, and made many lifelong friends.  She was a nurturer at heart, lovingly caring for her children, grandchildren, relatives, neighborhood kids, and all of God's creatures.
Mary had a magic touch and vision. In 1964, she took what appeared to be a run-down house with a barren rock-laden yard, turning it into a beautiful cozy home, with a stunning oasis surrounding it. She remained there until her passing. While others may have thrown in the towel, she was never daunted by the amount of work involved. Her home was her castle where all were welcome, and no one left unfed. Gardening was perhaps Mary's greatest passion, but she also enjoyed music, dancing, cooking, crocheting, sewing, and creating treasures for her loved ones. In recent years, she enjoyed playing Phase 10, especially with her grandchildren. She worked hard, but knew how to have fun too. Her smile and her laughter were contagious and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, sister Benita Cesario, husband, daughter Patricia Shivers, son Andy Lovato, granddaughter Shauna Wells, grandson Gregory Shivers, and great-grandson Cory Lovato. She is survived by her children - Frank Lovato, George (Beth) Lovato, Clifford Lovato, Jerry Lovato, Linda Jeter, Kathy (Bob) Stogner, and Madeline Lovato, all of Florence. Grandchildren - Randy (Becky) Shivers, Cheryl (Peter) Niles, David Lovato, Christina Lovato, Clifford (Dori) Lovato, Sharelle Lovato, Angela (Tim) Pope, Lori (David) Griffith, Rodney (Judy) Lovato, Mark (Sandra) Jeter, Frank Feezor, Michelle Sparks, Andrea Lovato, Brandi Bowie, Katrina (Craig) Wawryk, Catlin Bowie, Zach (Stefanie) Avila, Sophia Avila, and numerous great- and great-great grandchildren. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, as well as her little buddy and ever present shadow Cuddles.
Her presence will be greatly missed here on earth but her legacy of love, respect, compassion, and strength will live on.
