Regina Appel - August 19, 1939 - November 16, 2022

Departed: 11/16/2022 (Lake Benton)
Obituary Preview: Adored mother and grandmother Regina (Jeane) Appel passed away peacefully at her home on November 16th, 2022, at the age of 83.
Jeane’s life began on August 19, 1939, in Wilmont, Minnesota, to her beloved parents Lawrence and Monica, Ohlenkamp. She spent her early years growing up in Wilmont until moving to Woodstock, Minnesota, to begin the first grade at the District 14 Country School. She remained a student at the country school until enrolling in Pipestone High school to pursue further education. Jeane was always a phenomenal student, excelling at everything she encountered. This would reign true for the entirety of her life. She proceeded to graduate high school in 1957, being awarded the peace pipe for her achievements as valedictorian. However, in typical Jeane fashion, she did not stop there. She continued on to attend Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in pursuit of a business degree.
The following years were spent exploring multiple job opportunities in the Pipestone area and attending numerous dances at the Hatfield ballroom. Soon after, Jeane met and later married Donald (Slim) J. Kor in Woodstock, Minnesota, on May 23, 1959. Upon marriage, Jeane and Donald were frequent attendees of the Holland fast-pitch softball games and the local bowling alley. The couple then established their home in Holland, Minnesota, where they would raise their three kids, Leighton (1962), Lance (1964), and Jodi (1966). Unfortunately, on October 25, 1967, Jeane’s husband, Slim, passed away in a tragic accident.
In the years following, Jeane met Jim Appel, who she would later marry on November 1, 1969. Together, they relocated to a farm near Lake Benton, Minnesota, where they welcomed two children, Jason (1970) and Paulette (1976). Jeane was the ultimate homemaker. She spent much of her days caring for her children and their home, and despite all of this, Jeane remained a prominent member of St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church in Lake Benton. At St. Genevieve’s, she held multiple honorable positions, including the Council of Catholic Women’s (CCW) president and later on becoming the CCW president for the dioceses of New Ulm. As her children grew older, Jeane accepted a job at the Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Ivanhoe, Minnesota, where she worked for eighteen years until retirement.
In 2012, Jeane decided to move to Ankeny, Iowa, where two of her children resided. In Ankeny, she remained devoted to her faith by becoming a member of the Catholic church, Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart. She found community within the church through faith-sharing groups, including the Catholic Daughters of America. In addition to her faith, she found joy in gardening, cooking, canning, traveling, and never missed an opportunity to send a heartfelt card or gift. She had many passions in life, but her family was always her pride and joy, especially hosting their annual lake vacations.
Jeane is survived by Beth Kor (daughter-in-law), Lance Kor (JoeNell), Jodi Lambrecht, Jason Appel, Paulette Appel (Dawn), her six grandchildren, and many relatives.
Jeane was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Monica Ohlenkamp, and son, Leighton Kor.

Obituary Preview: JUDY ANN THOMSSEN, age 74, of Lake Benton, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at the Pipestone County Hospice House in Pipestone, Minnesota.
Judy was born on August 7, 1948, to John and Cherry (Kepler) Johnson. She attended school in Pipestone, Minnesota. On March 8, 1965, Judy married the love of her life Ron Thomssen and in 1966, they moved south of Lake Benton to Fountain Prairie Township where they farmed and raised their son, Will. He was Judy’s sunshine.
The locals like the veterinarian and implement guys, knew to come to the Thomssen farm around noon because no matter how many guests came, Judy had plenty of food and room around the kitchen table. In 1989, Will married Heidi (Perry) whom Judy embraced wholeheartedly as a daughter. They brought into the world Judy’s three grandsons, Cody, Garritt and Trav. She loved the T-boys fiercely, leading them by her example of hard work and living by the spirit in the sky. They will forever cherish the memories Country Grandma made with them at the farm, playing catch for hours, jumping haybales and teaching them valuable life lessons like, “If you’re going to climb the tree, you better know how to get back down.”
Judy spent her life doing what she could to make life better for others. Bringing laughter and extending friendship wherever she went, Judy volunteered immeasurable hours to her church, auxiliary, extension, and mealsite (Senior Dining Meals). She especially dedicated time to the Henry Sollie American Legion Post and Auxiliary, where she had so much fun working with the girls, she referred to them as her daughters by another mom.
Cherishing her friends and fun-loving times, Judy looked forward to bingo night and early mornings at the Verdi coffee house, where she shared her homemade cinnamon sugar doughnut holes.
Judy will be remembered for her infectious laughter, beautiful smile, and the way she made people feel special, treating many like one of her own. Judy carried throughout her life a great love of singing. Whether it was in church singing hymns loudly and proudly or a sporting event singing the National Anthem; she was giving it her all! As Judy reflected about her time on earth she said, “When you are born, you cry and everyone else rejoices and when you die, everyone cries and you rejoice. What a life.”

MICKEY ALLAN DUEHN, age 70, of Lake Benton, MN, passed away at his home on March 19, 2022. Mick was born on February 17, 1952, to Leo and Ruby (Soderberg) Duehn in Mound, MN. He was the youngest of 3 siblings. He grew up and graduated from school in Mound. Mick loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and anything with a motor that went fast. He had a knack for mechanics and was known for taking things apart and then putting them back together again, often with “extra parts” left when he was finished! (Remarkably they would still work!) He channeled this skill into a successful career working on cars, motorcycles and boats all over the states of Minnesota and Virginia. He eventually opened his own Kawasaki dealership after moving to Lake Benton. Mick married Jeanine Onasch in 1975, and together they had 4 children: Levi, Brooks, Serenity and Elwood. He enjoyed teaching his kids to ride anything with wheels and passed on his mechanical knowledge so they were able to repair their dirt bikes and cars if they broke down. Over the years they moved many times and eventually settled back in Lake Benton where Mick and Jeanine started a commercial floor cleaning business.
Mick’s faith was important to him and he dedicated himself as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses as a young adult. He served God faithfully and encouraged that faith in others as well. The resurrection hope given to us in the bible, in Acts 24:15, provided him with much comfort over the years when faced with the loss of loved ones. Mick had a great sense of humor and was known for his infectious, laughing giggle that would shake his whole upper body. He was a giving, big-hearted person, always putting others before himself. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need; the joke was if he didn’t have a shirt he would at least find them a deal on one! Mick loved all animals, but especially his pet dachshunds. They became his “babies” when his children were all grown; wherever he went, they went too. Mick was also a tough human as most of his adult life he suffered from debilitating pain due to a horrific snowmobile versus school bus accident he had back in his “need for speed” days. He broke both legs in multiple places and was hospitalized for months. His doctors were not sure he would walk again, but with Mick’s determination and strength he overcame his injuries and managed to lead an active life despite his mobility issues. He will be dearly missed by his family.

How do I handle conflicting opinions about what should be included in an obituary?

If there are differing opinions within the family or among friends about what should be included in the obituary, try to find common ground and focus on celebrating the person's life rather than dwelling on disagreements.

Can I use an online template or example as a guide for writing an obituary?

Yes! Online templates and examples can provide valuable guidance and inspiration as you write the obituary. Feel free to modify them to fit your needs and style.

What if I'm unsure about what type of information is appropriate for an online versus print obituary?

In general, online obituaries tend to be more flexible in terms of content and length. Print obituaries may have stricter guidelines due to space limitations. Consult with the publication or platform for specific guidance.
