Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial services, and any charitable donations in their memory.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy for generations to come.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or crematorium. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also be involved in writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies or interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, burial or cremation arrangements, and any charitable donations in their memory.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's wishes. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries may be longer than those published in print newspapers due to space constraints.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms allow you to upload photos, videos, and other multimedia elements to create a more personalized tribute. Some print newspapers may also accept photos or other graphics for inclusion in the obituary.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Typically, you will need to provide the written obituary text, along with any accompanying photos or multimedia elements, to the funeral home or directly to the publication. They will then review and publish the obituary according to their guidelines.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while print newspapers may charge by the word or line. Funeral homes may also offer package deals that include obituary publication as part of their services.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is possible to write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on your life and accomplishments, and can also ensure that your final words are exactly as you want them to be. Many people choose to write their own obituaries as part of their estate planning or end-of-life care.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only their name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that includes biographical information and other details about the person's life.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries are meant to celebrate the person's life and personality, so including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help bring their memory to life for readers.

How long after someone passes away should an obituary be published?

The timing of publishing an obituary varies depending on cultural and personal preferences. Typically, it is published within a few days of the person's passing, but it can be delayed if necessary (e.g., if there are pending funeral arrangements).

Can I edit or update an obituary after it has been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some online platforms allow for easy editing and updates, while print newspapers may have more limited options for making changes once the obituary has been published.

How do I find an old obituary from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in collecting historical records. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archives of old newspapers that can be searched manually.

Can I republish an old obituary on social media or another website?

This depends on copyright laws and permissions from the original publisher. If you're unsure about republication rights, it's best to contact the original publisher or seek legal advice.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died unexpectedly?

Yes. When writing an obituary for someone who died young or unexpectedly, it's especially important to be sensitive to the grieving family and friends. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments, rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their passing.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes or poems that were meaningful to the deceased can add depth and personality to the obituary.

How do I handle writing an obituary for someone with a complex or difficult past?

This can be a challenging task. Approach it with sensitivity and compassion, focusing on the positive aspects of their life while still being honest about their struggles or challenges.

Can I include information about memorial donations or charity contributions in an obituary?

Yes! Including information about memorial donations or charity contributions can help honor the deceased person's memory while also supporting a good cause.
