Departed: 05/01/2024 (Memphis)
Obituary Preview: Charles Knight, 90, a cherished Father and Husband, was called to his eternal resting place on May 1, 2024. He was born on April 13, 1934, in Osceola, Arkansas, to Essie "Jack" Knight and Jessie Knight. His early life was marked by his education at Rosenwald School and his early acceptance of Christ at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. At age 15, he journeyed from Osceola to St. Louis, where he lived with his brother Maine, then to an independent life in New Orleans, and eventually to Chicago in 1959. There, he met and married his beloved wife, Willie Mae Knight, in 1966. Their union blessed them with five children: Thomas, Glenda (Benny), Vicky (Darnell), Yolanda, and Xavier; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson. Throughout his life, Charles was ambitious, hardworking, and a relentless problem solver for his family. He took his first job at just 7 years old. Driven by a desire to be his own boss, Charles ran several businesses. Even after "retiring" as an independent contractor for the City of Chicago, he didn't stop. When he moved to Memphis, he started a landscaping business, finally retiring at the age of 83, a testament to his unwavering work ethic and determination. Charles loved baseball. When he wasn't working he enjoyed watching the Saint Louis Cardinals, his favorite team. Go Redbirds!!!
Charles was a committed man of God with an unwavering faith. While raising and supporting his family in Chicago, he found solace and strength in his church community. He joined Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, and later became an Usher at Truth and Deliverance Christian Center. His faith journey continued in Memphis, where he joined New Growth in Christ Christian Center, also serving as a Deacon. Charles lived his life in accordance with his favorite Psalm 34. He was a living example of verse 1, "I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips," and verse 14, "Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it." His faith was not just a belief, but a way of life that he embodied.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers: Harry, Willie B, George, Odell, and Ted; and 5 sisters: Jenny, Clyde D, RuthAnn, Rose, and Essie. He leaves to mourn his sister Ophelia Anderson of Chicago, Illinois, his beloved wife of 58 years, Willie Mae, all of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Departed: 01/25/2024 (Memphis)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Walter Ellis Ragsdale, III was born to the late Walter Ellis Ragsdale Jr. and Garnett A Hardy. He was born July 11, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, and peacefully departed this life at Baptist Memorial Hospital on January 25, 2024.
Walter was raised by his grandfather, Reverand Walter E. Ragsdale Sr., his Father, Walter E. Ragsdale Jr., and his mother-in-love, Lillie A. Ragsdale. He adored his parents. He cherished the years with his brother Quintin and sister Yasmine. Growing up in Emmanuel Baptist Church, he met his lifelong friend Willie B. Watkins. Walter sang in the choir and played the piano—these gifts he inherited from his grandmother.
Walter attended Hamilton High School, where he was on the basketball team and played saxophone in the band. His senior year, he transferred to Carver High School, where he received his high school diploma. He also attended culinary school and earned his certification as a Chef.
While in high school, he met and later married his sweetheart, Carolynn A. Woodruff, on August 28, 1967. Two children were born to their union, Stephanie C. Ragsdale and Walter E. Ragsdale IV. The couple moved to Los Angeles, California.
In California, he worked at the Orthopedic Hospital in the Central Receiving Department, at various restaurants as a Chef, and at General Motors on the assembly line. When the GM plant closed in Los Angeles, Walter continued with the plant in Missouri and then in Texas. He ultimately retired from the General Motors plant in Texas and moved back home to Memphis, Tennessee. He obtained work at Kirby Pines Retirement Community, where he returned to his passion for working as a chef.
In Memphis, Tennessee, he met and married Emma J. Barnes on August 13, 1994. She preceded him in death on May 13, 2013.
While grieving, he met the widow Verna Stephens-Crockett, and their love story began. They both lost their loved ones in May 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital and shared their feelings with each other... the loneliness, the loss, the hurt, etc. They comforted each other and, in the process, grew closer. They married on November 27, 2015.
The couple enjoyed entertaining, cooking, spending time with their children, and traveling. Walter loved sports. He supported the Steelers, Verna supported the Chiefs, he supported the Lakers, Verna supported the Grizzlies, he supported the Dodgers, and Verna supported the Cardinals. Differences, yes, yet totally united.
Walter was added to the Southeast Side Church of Christ on May 24, 2019. He enjoyed attending church services until his health began to fail. He then watched church services online at home.
Walter and Verna were inseparable, demonstrating the essence of unconditional love. They faced life’s challenges hand in hand, providing a shining example of resilience and commitment.
Walter’s absence leaves a void that will be felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy lives on through his wife, children, grandchildren, and others he touched.
He is survived by his loving wife of eight years, Verna Stephens- Ragsdale; brother Quintin R. Ragsdale (Helen), sister Yasmine B. Ragsdale; daughter, Stephanie C. Handsome (Kenny); son, Walter E.
