HERMAN A MEYER - January 07, 1940 - February 04, 2022

Departed: 02/04/2022 (Gonzales)
Obituary Preview: Herman August “Buddy” Meyer, Jr. was called to our Heavenly Father on February 4th, 2022.  Buddy was born January 7th, 1940, in Davis, West Virginia, to Herman A. “Jim” Meyer, Sr. and Mary Francis (Eubank).  The fourth of six children, Buddy was preceded in death by his brother Johnny and sisters, Barbara and Nancy.  He is survived by his sister Susan Meyer, brother Fred Meyer, and niece Morgan Meyer, and Barbara’s son, Andrew Heisley.
A standout basketball player at Mountaineer High School, Buddy dreamed of playing in college.  Life provided a detour when his dream school did not offer a scholarship, and he joined the Air Force at the age of seventeen.  Buddy was very proud of his Air Force service, and remembered Morse code from his days monitoring Russian radio transmissions in Turkey and Scotland. He played basketball for the Air Force at the Inter-Service World Championships, and while his team did not win that tournament, his home town could cheer him on while listening to the games on the radio.  His standout play while at Lackland AFB in San Antonio caught the eye of St. Mary’s Coach, Mel Barborak, who offered him a scholarship to play at St. Mary’s University.
Once Buddy donned the Gold and Blue, he set many school records that stand to this day.  He was an All-Conference selection all four years, and led St. Mary’s to their first appearance in the NAIA National Championship where the team knocked out the number one tournament seed, and advanced several rounds before losing to the eventual champion.  During his time at St. Mary’s he met his beloved future wife, Anna Marie Hibberd.  Buddy and Anna were blessed with 56 years of marriage, during which they created a large and close-knit family. Buddy is survived by Anna; his daughters, Suzanne Meyer, Mary Beth Harr, MD, and her husband Brian, Jennifer Bankler, DDS and her husband Scott, and son Herman A. “Bubba” Meyer III and his wife Vanessa. All of his children and their spouses are also proud alumni of St. Mary’s. Ten much adored grandchildren also survive Buddy: Cal and his wife Ellie Harr, Carly and Mia Harr, Benjamin and William Bankler, and Grayson, Dillon, Chase, Harper, and Quinn Meyer.  Buddy beamed with joy and pride whenever his grandchildren were anywhere near him and wore down his blue recliner reading stories to them, reviewing flash cards, and having tea parties.  He was also happy to instruct them on their shooting form on the hoop from the original Alumni gym that hung on his back porch.
After graduating from St. Mary’s, Buddy’s first coaching job was at Antonian High School, where his team won the TCIL State Basketball Championship in 1968.  He remained in close contact with those young men throughout his life. Buddy was then offered the assistant basketball coaching position at St. Mary’s under the man who coached him, Ed Messbarger, and in 1978 was offered the head coaching job.  Buddy coached at St. Mary’s until his retirement in 2005.  His teams were highly successful on the court, winning numerous conference titles, and the NAIA National Championship in 1989 when Buddy was also named NAIA National Coach of the year.  He was honored as a St. Mary’s Distinguished Alumnus, and his coaching skills earned him induction into the St. Mary’s University Athletics Hall of Fame, Antonian Athletics Hall of Fame, Heartland Conference Hall of Fame, San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, NAIA Hall of Fame and a spot on the NAIA 75th Anniversary All Star Team as a Coach.  Buddy appreciated the loyal support of many friends and extended family, who cheered from the stands over numerous years.  This includes his extended Hibberd family; Dr. Alan and Tracy Hibberd, Terri Curtis, Joni and Rod Romero, and many nieces and nephews.
Although the on-court accolades are plentiful, Buddy was most proud of his athletes completing their college education.  More than 80% of his players graduated from college and led successful careers when their playing days were finished.  Those graduates went on to become successful lawyers, doctors, coaches, educators, and businessmen. Many continued close contact with Buddy throughout his life, some even considered him like a second father, and reached out to celebrate him on both his birthday and Father’s day every year.  Buddy’s reach extended beyond his basketball players to the entire St. Mary’s community.  Especially dear to him were the Marianist priests and brothers, who supported him and instilled in him the values that he carried throughout his life. He had the gift of making each person feel important, because to him they were.
Once he retired, Buddy continued his support of St. Mary’s basketball, where he was able to harass referees without fear of a technical foul. Buddy and Anna would follow the team on trips and enjoy visiting with Alumni and old friends along the way. Buddy touched many lives both on and off the campus at St. Mary’s and he built many true, and lasting friendships.  Devout in his Catholic faith, Buddy and Anna were members of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church for more than forty years.  That faith served him well during two arduous battles with cancer and other health issues that plagued his later years. Despite how he felt, he never missed a day of work or weekly Mass. The family wishes to thank the physicians who cared for Buddy, especially his long-time friend and former team physician, Dr. Jesse DeLee.  Under the care of him and Dr. Steven Kalter, Dr. Fernando Triana, Dr. Carlos Roman, and Dr. Victor “Butch” Vela (a beloved former player), the family enjoyed an extra twenty years with him.  The family is also grateful to the doctors and nurses at Methodist Hospital for the compassionate care, and kindness they provided during Buddy’s last days.
A rosary will be recited in Buddy’s honor at 730 p.m. on February 13th, with a funeral Mass following on February 14th at 1000.  Both services will be held at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church. A private family burial with military honors will be held at Ft. Sam Houston at a later date. Funeral arrangements are provided by Harris Funeral Home, www.harrisfamilymortuary.com. The Family would like to thank George Harris, a former player and friend, for taking such loving care of Buddy during the final phase of his journey.

GENE M WILLS, SR. - September 13, 1942 - October 31, 2021

Departed: 10/31/2021 (Gonzales)
Obituary Preview: Gene MacArthur Wills, Sr. born to Lauvenia and Jesse Wills on September 13, 1942, gained his heavenly wings on October 31, 2021. He was born in Thaxton, Virginia where he grew up in the country where the land of his family was known as “Free State”. Gene loved telling the stories of the mischief of him and his two older brothers, Owen and Jesse, and his many cousins and family that resided in the area. He accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized along with his brothers at Oakmugee Baptist Church in Bedford, Virginia. A few weeks after graduating from Susie G. Gibson High School at age 18, Gene started his journey in the Air Force on June 21, 1961 and climbed the ranks to Chief Master Sergeant. During his tenure in the military, he received three Meritorious Service Medals. Gene retired from the Air Force in San Antonio, Texas after serving 22 years, 3 months, and 11 days Higher education was very important to Gene, and he made sure to continue his education while in the military receiving his Baccalaureate degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska and his MBA in Human Resource Management from Central Michigan University. Gene Wills didn’t stop after the Air Force, he continued his career in Human Resources with the Austin Independent School District and retired after 25 years. Aside from his professional career, Gene Wills was inducted as a Mason and Shriner in Omaha, Nebraska with the Zaha Temple in 1974 and was affiliated with the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge - Rough Ashler as a 32nd degree Mason. Gene became a Deacon in Austin, Texas at St. Stephen’s Missionary Baptist Church and continued his spiritual journey as a Deacon with Logos Baptist Church in Pflugerville, Texas where he held many leadership positions throughout the church. He loved God and loved to serve Him. He was thankful for all God had done for him and what God had brought him through. His favorite verse was Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me”. Anyone who knew Gene, knows his wife Hazel D. Wills. Hazel was Gene’s heartbeat. He loved Hazel for all she had to offer and then some. She was his precious diamond, his chocolate chip, his hershey kiss, the twinkle in his eye, and the flutter in his chest. The love they shared was so powerful. She is the reason he held onto precious life so fiercely and fought to stay on this earth for as long as he did. He married Hazel Deloise Mccoy on August 21, 1965. They had a bond like no other. They did everything together as one! Gene treated Hazel as his precious soulmate and partner. Gene stayed by Hazel’s side even in these last few years where he could no longer be her primary caregiver. She was always on his mind and continuously prayed for her throughout the day. It hurt his heart to see how Alzheimer’s, like a thief in the night, would come and erase pieces of her. His face would light up as soon as he saw her dance, laugh, or come out of her room and tell him “I know you. You are my friend, my buddy”. He was comforted knowing the plans of care for Hazel in the event he would be called home before her. Gene was always a planner and wanted to make sure his house was in order. Gene had four children with Hazel whose names are Pamela, Gene Jr., Randall, and Lisa. Gene preached to his kids the importance of education, family, and church. He would give his all to his kids and always made it a point to be there for all important milestones. He worked multiple jobs on several occasions and was committed and dedicated to his family. He put all four of his kids through college and was happy to live to see them with accomplished careers. He was a caring and a loving fatherin-law to Mitchell Ward, Helenna Haggerty Wills, and cherished the bond he had with Brian Kirvin Rogers until the end. Being a grandfather was a true joy to Gene. He had 6 grandchildren: Kennedy (20) , Brian (18), Mitchell Jr. (18), Samantha (16), Alexandria (15), and Preston (14). Before he left this world, he became a great-grandfather in November of 2019 with the birth of his great-granddaughter from Kennedy named Kinsley. He would have loved to see all his grandchildren graduate high school, college, and get married, and be successful in this world. They all made him proud. Gene Wills was a great husband, father, family man, father-in-law, uncle, friend, role model, and listener. He appreciated true friendship. He was a patriarch to his family with a wealth of knowledge and in-depth family history. As his health failed over the last years, he yearned to talk to his friends and family, but was concerned about being a burden. He was thankful to all those that would check on him and he truly was thankful to those in his family that stood by his side as caregivers. He prayed for everyone until the end. We will truly miss Dad, Daddy, Cool Pops, Papa, Paw Paw, Pop Pop, G-PaPa, G-Pop Pop, Old Man, Old Fart, Gene, Mr. Wills, Uncle Gene, Scatter. When asked if he would like to leave a message to everyone when God calls him home, he thought for a second and then stated the following: “Don’t worry about me - I’m free and at peace. Watch over Hazel.” ========================================================================
Gene leaves to cherish his legacy of memories to his loving wife Hazel; his children with Hazel: Pamela Lynette Wills-Ward (Mitchell), Gene MacArthur Wills, Jr. (Helenna), Randall Levi Wills, Lisa Renee Wills-Rogers (Brian); his six grandchildren: Kennedy Hartman Wills, Brian Rogers II, Mitchell Ward, Jr., Samantha Ward, Alexandria Rogers, and Preston Ward, and one greatgrandchild Kinsley Skye Bedford; his brother Jesse Wills (Janice); his late brother Owen Wills’ family: sister-in-law Jackie Wills, nieces Christine Davis (Jeff), Sharon Nelms (Doug), and nephew Owen ”Buddy” Wills (Angela); his first-cousin Thomas Brown (Thesrez); and a host of other Wills, Brown, Easter, and Johnson family members and friends spread across the United States. Richard came into this world on February 4, 1964 in Gonzales, TX to Mary and Richard Ayala, Sr. He was raised in Waelder, TX where he graduated from Waelder High School in 1982. Shortly after, he met the love of his life Rebecca (Becky). The two were married in 1985 and this union has blessed them with three daughters and five grandchildren. Richard was a die hard Tennessee Titans, San Antonio Spurs, and Texas Longhorns fan which resulted in a divided household all year long due to Becky being a fan of opposing teams Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers, and Texas A&M Aggies. Richard had many things he cherished in life. His wife, daughters, grandchildren, as well as his employment with the Texas Department of Transportation. Here he dedicated 35+ years of service and considered those he worked with as a second family. We will remember him as the greatest family man who always put his loved ones first. Even in his last days his grandchildren were the ones who kept him going. Richard was the life of all gatherings by being the family DJ, everyone’s dance partner, the best jokester, and of course had the best “grito.” We will miss the selfless gestures he did to pamper his children even through their adult years such as manicuring their hands and feet, ironing and washing their clothes, detailing their vehicles, and being the best lawn care individual to not only his property but his parent’s as well. Richard is survived by his three daughters: Amanda Walker & husband Brandon Walker, Geralyn Ayala & husband Javier Amaro, and Angelica Ayala; his grandchildren Alaya & Brandon Walker, August Amaro, and Kamdon & Kaison Ayala; his 3 siblings, their spouses,  numerous nieces and nephews, as well as aunts and uncles whom he loved beyond words.
