Edith Johnson - June 24, 1948 - February 09, 2024

Departed: 02/09/2024 (Waycross)
Obituary Preview: Edith Eileen Keaton Johnson was born on June 24, 1948 in Los Angeles, CA to the late Quincy Edwards Keaton and Rudolph Keaton, Sr. She moved to Waycross, GA, in 1955 and lived there for most of her life. Edith passed into eternal glory on February 9, 2024, in Lawrenceville, GA. Affectionately called “Earlene” by family and childhood friends, but widely known and adored as “Mrs. Johnson,” Edith did more than just live in Waycross. She was the epitome of Waycross excellence. She thrived. She inspired. She was a mover and she was undeniably a shaker. She was a scholar who graduated from Albany State College (now University) and later earned her masters degree at Valdosta State College (now University). Ultimately, much of Edith’s lasting impact in the community was a direct result of her dedication in the classroom. As an English teacher at both Waycross and Ware County High Schools and at Waycross College (now South Georgia State College), she was a voracious reader and a life-long learner who worked to instill in her students her passion for knowledge. Extensive vocabulary word lists, pop quizzes, prefixes, suffixes, creative writing, journaling, The Iliad, The Odyssey, To Kill a Mockingbird, Canterbury Tales and pop quizzes. That was not a typo — the “Mrs. Johnson Way” was all about keeping you on your toes!
She was an English Department Head and a STAR teacher who also facilitated the Governor's Honors Program. And you could frequently find her cheering on her students at local sporting events. These are just a few ways Mrs. Johnson made her mark.
However, Mrs. Johnson's reach extended beyond the chalkboard and the four walls of the classroom. Far beyond. She was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated through the Gamma Sigma Chapter at Albany State on December 1, 1967. She served as an active member of the NAACP, the Black Action Committee and was a charter member of the Chi Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in Waycross. At the time of her passing, she had achieved “Golden Soror” status, having served the sorority for 56 years.
Edith was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, and committed herself to a life of serving Christ and the community. It was also at Mt. Zion that she married her forever sweetheart, Theodore Johnson, on June 27, 1970.
One of the greatest joys of her life was supporting daughters Charity and Erica in all of their personal and professional endeavors. From pageants and church programs to promotions and passion projects, Edith was her children’s No. 1 cheerleader every step of the way.
Edith lived in Waycross until 2020, and moved to Lawrenceville, GA, to be closer to family.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Johnson.
Left to cherish her memory include her two daughters Charity Quincy Johnson of Buford, GA; Erica Renee Davis (Keith) of Los Angeles, CA. Also mourning her passing are her four grandchildren: Natalie Eileen Kassa, McKenna Renee Kassa and Langston Thaddeus Kassa, all of Buford, GA; and Hillary Theodore Davis of Los Angeles, CA.
Edith leaves behind four siblings: Margaret Keaton, Sandra Elbert and Donna Renee Keaton, all of Waycross, GA; and Charlene (MD) Keith, Savannah, GA. She was preceded in death by her brother Rudolph Keaton, Jr. Also mourning her death is a special cousin Jacqueline Elaine Beverly of Bronx, NY; sisters-in-law Emma Rene Gerard of Waycross, GA; and Martha Ann McPhaul of Leesville, LA.
Edith also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, close childhood friends, sorority sisters and colleagues.
A mommy, sister, friend and mentor. Godmother, Grammy, Golden and Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
An esteemed educator. A fearless fashionista. Everybody's favorite Auntie. A trusted confidante. A true Waycross/Ware County leader and legend.
Legendary. That is — and will always be — Mrs. Edith Eileen Keaton Johnson.
