Howard Erick Sims - December 01, 1952 - March 03, 2024

Departed: 03/03/2024 (Hagerstown)
Obituary Preview: Howard Erick Sims, 71, of Martinsburg, WV, fell asleep in death on March 3, 2024, at Berkeley Medical Center after a courageous battle with a very aggressive form of leukemia.
Howard was born on December 1, 1952, to Ernest and Rachel Sims in Manhattan, NY. Growing up near Brooklyn Bethel, his family’s home was a welcoming place for many full-time servants of Jehovah, whom his parents regularly hosted. This provided Howard and his siblings with a rich spiritual foundation. Howard was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on July 12,1969 marking the beginning of his lifelong dedication to his faith.
Howard graduated from the New York School of Printing in 1970. Sometime after graduation, he moved to Fredericksburg, VA to serve where the need was great, engaging in full-time ministry work. He quickly made friends with other young pioneer brothers. They went on to have many adventures as they spread God’s Kingdom message. At times Howard went preaching on a bicycle, since he didn’t have a car.
After pioneering for a time, Howard’s father encouraged him to apply to go to Bethel. He was accepted, and entered Bethel service on June 18, 1974. Howard gained a self-sacrificing spirit as he worked in the Press room, which was not only dangerous and noisy, it often would reach 105 degrees during the humid summers. Howard developed a camaraderie with his Bethel brothers that remained strong and close throughout his life. Howard was also surrounded by divine education at Bethel. He enjoyed being taught by brothers such as Fred Franz, Nathan Knorr and Dan Sydlik, who used to play baseball with the young brothers and then talk to them about the importance of loving the friends in the congregation and not viewing themselves as superior. This experience molded him into a loving, spiritual man.
On January 22,1976, Howard married Jynette Swanson. They worked together at Bethel until June 24, 1978 and then settled in Martinsburg, WV and went on to raise their 3 children, Jaszlynn, Halston and Atlanta until Jynette’s passing in 2009.
Howard was determined to remain single, until a sister from Portland, Oregon, moved to the congregation and ‘turned his head’. He asked his heavenly father, Jehovah, in prayer ‘if he could have Trish.’ Both Jehovah and Trish said “Yes,” and they were married January 7, 2012, in Martinsburg where he went on to help her raise Elijah, Jonah, and Isaac, providing them with an excellent role model to follow as a husband and father.
Howard along with his brother started Amber Services in the 1980’s. They provided window cleaning and other services to both commercial and residential customers. Howard didn’t need to advertise because he always got word of mouth recommendations from his customers.
Through the years Howard took numerous young brothers under his wing, teaching them the skill of window washing. But more than just a trade, he taught them many valuable life lessons including how to be spiritual men, and how to develop a strong personal relationship with Jehovah. Many viewed him as their loving father.
Howard served as an elder in the Martinsburg, WV congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for over 40 years. Howard was known for his genuine loving concern and his self sacrificing spirit. He was always just a phone call away, ready to give comfort, loving counsel, and encouragement which he continued to offer even days before he fell asleep in death. Howard was also known for his zeal in the ministry and served as the Service overseer for many years. In 2020 he was able to realize his goal of returning to full time service, and attended Pioneer Service School the following year. He continued full time service until shortly before his death.
Howard had a passion for basketball, which he played well into his 60's. He delighted in watching basketball and football on TV. He especially cherished in depth discussions of the games with his best friend and brother, Stephen. Howard regularly watched cooking shows. He was a very good cook and would create interesting meals. He took pleasure spending time at the beach and exploring Jehovah’s creation.
Howard is preceded in death by his first wife Jynette, and his parents, Ernest and Rachel Sims. Howard is survived by his wife of 12 years, Trish Sims, his six children, Jaszlynn Diop, Halston (Alecia) Sims, Atlanta Sims, Elijah Katsanis, Jonah (Jada) Katsanis, and Isaac Katsanis. His six granddaughters, Jamoke and Tolani Adebayo, Khadijah Diop, Kiera and Maisy Katsanis, and Charlotte Katsanis (whom he was waiting to meet). His four sisters, Sandra Brown, Mona Mitchell, Gwen Craddock, Hope (JT) Thompson, and his brothers Stephen (Gail) Sims and George Duncan. As well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins in addition to his spiritual family and children.
The loss of Howard leaves a giant void in all of our hearts that will only be remedied when we welcome him back in the Earthly Paradise.
