Linda Lee Pertz - August 24, 1939 - February 04, 2024

Departed: 02/04/2024 (Weston)
Obituary Preview: “Stand up straight and put a smile on,” is what my mother would have told us despite our sadness at her passing. Seeing our smiles in place she would have said, “Now let’s get outta here while they aren’t looking. Stuff some pillows in the bed and they’ll never know we’re gone.” Linda Lee (West) Pertz was a perennial jokester and full of life to her very last day. She passed peacefully away on February 4th, at the age of 84, in her long-time home town, Weston, WV. She was born in Harmon, WV to Nell Jane (Moss) West (1915-2000) and Elmer Franklin “Buck” West (1914-1995). She was the middle child of five who loved, laughed, and looked out for her brother and sisters: Jenny Lynne West of Lynchburg, VA, William Franklin “Bud” West (1938-1980), Jane (West) Ralston of Winston-Salem, NC, Pamela Moss Schneeman (1944-2007). She attended high school and college in Buckhannon, WV. In 1961, she received her B.A. in History from West Virginia Wesleyan. Her late husband, Earlo Roland Pertz (1928-2018), was the love of her life and a great guy with a good sense of humor. He was a man of few words who later in life didn’t want to have anything to do with Linda’s antics, but he was always the first one to laugh while her pranks ensued. She was a handful for Earlo. She stayed up late and never stopped talking. He frequently said, “She’s driving me crazy!”, but he also openly admitted, “I don’t know what I’d do without her.”
When she was young Linda’s father moved the family out to the country to give his wild children room to roam while keeping them out of trouble. Linda, however, was a feisty rascal with a great imagination and the determination to accomplish anything. She loved listening to, watching, and reading Westerns. She always dreamed of being a cowboy. One Christmas she got real cowboy boots with spinning spurs. She loved them but the little round balls on the tips of the spurs weren’t authentic, so she promptly filed them down into sharp points. When she needed a fast horse, but none were to be found, she eagerly made do by riding a cow down the road. She was envious when her older brother got a Red Ryder BB Gun for his birthday, and she managed to be the first one to take aim. She hit her target straight-on, shooting their ornery neighbor in the butt. She was a huge fan of Roy Rogers. One afternoon while her parents were out, she gathered her brother and sisters together stating that she had found Roy Roger’s phone number, and she was going to call him up. She managed to get the operators to connect her all the way to the studio. Unfortunately, Roy was busy on set and not available to take a phone call, but Linda wasn’t deterred and promised to call him back later. Well, news travels fast in a small community. Her father was informed almost as soon as he returned and forbid the operator to connect her to California again. So much for keeping Linda out of trouble. Linda’s sister Jane can corroborate most of these stories. These two remained best friends throughout their lives, talking nearly every day. Jane says when Linda set her mind on something, she went after it. She was just born that way, always having adventures and sometimes getting into trouble.
Despite her love for a good joke, it was serious business once you stepped into Linda’s house. It was colorfully curated, full of personality, and very tidy. Everything had its place. She insisted that we all use our manners and needed to be ready to dine with royalty at any time. She had dishes and cocktail napkins to serve the entire town and stacks of cookbooks that she used for inspiration. She could whip up a gourmet dining experience at a moment's notice that would be fit for the queen including napkins folded in the shape of a crown. She created delicious dishes ranging from clam bakes to biscuits and gravy. Her timing was always spot on, her presentation was always colorful and fresh, and every plate had an interesting garnish or a frill of greenery. She also had a knack for being able to create a tasty birthday cake in the likeness of anything you could imagine, even a flaming igloo Baked Alaska. Along with her penchant for presentation, she also firmly believed that “a little bacon wouldn’t kill you,” even if you were a life-long vegetarian.
All of the animals in the neighborhood knew that her house was the place to go for a warm buttered biscuit. She loved animals of all kinds, even the chipmunks that she was certain were trying to take over the house. Growing up she had a variety of pets: dogs, cats, goats, ducks, geese, skunks, an iguana, and, most famously, a monkey. Like we said, Linda had a knack for accomplishing what most wouldn’t even dare. She ordered the monkey in secret from the back of a comic book and surprised her mother and siblings who all quickly fell in love with the cute creature. Her father, however, received the news in a more unexpected way, arriving home late one night after returning from a business trip. Tired and hungry, he reached into a dark orange crate to get a snack and instead discovered a screaming monkey hurtling out after him. It took him a while to collect himself but when he did, he told Linda she had 24 hours to find “that thing” a new home. Linda loved cats and dogs and there was always a fuzzy friend in her house keeping her company. Long after her beloved dog Sophie passed, she still had a cookie jar full of dog biscuits in the kitchen and a bag of dog biscuits on the passenger seat of her car so she had snacks ready for any hungry pups along the way. She is survived by two grand kitties and who have enough cat nip and toys from Linda to last a lifetime.
Her daughters Amber Pertz (Justin Marrow) and Paige (Pertz) Ilkhanipour (Dr. Kamyar Ilkhanipour) were always in awe of her, often referring to her as a hummingbird. She was always very busy, buzzing around, and she got a lot done in her time. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, neighbor, teacher, photographer, seamstress, realtor, politician, gardener, inventor, artist, and much more. Extremely creative and resourceful with a can-do attitude, Linda was always coming up with clever solutions to vexing problems. She created art and sculptures to decorate her home. When she needed a table but couldn’t find one to fit her space, she made one from scratch. When her daughters wanted unique Halloween costumes, she whipped up a menagerie of creatures: a praying mantis, an octopus, a penguin, a frog, a skunk. You’d name it, and she’d make it. One year the kids in the neighborhood were fascinated with aliens, so Linda turned the trampoline into a flying saucer complete with aliens, eerie lights and spooky sounds. She created an alien encounter for the entire neighborhood which few ever forgot. Linda loved to decorate and celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and birthdays. She had notes and lists for everything not to be forgotten. They were everywhere. This system never failed her because she never forgot a person or an important date. Linda loved her family, friends and community. She loved living in West Virigina and refused to leave her home and her neighbors with whom she had become best friends. She adored talking to them, cooking for them, and inviting them and their families into her home. The love, care and attention that she received from her friends and neighbors was something that is rarely seen in this day and age. We don’t know what we would have done without you all and express our never-ending gratitude!
Linda always had a positive outlook on life and was never one to linger in sadness or mope around. She will be fondly remembered and celebrated on a warm, sunny day this spring with a lively gathering of friends and family. There will be plenty of food, music, and many entertaining stories of intrigue and hijinks. It will be a party that Linda would be proud of, a feast fit for a queen or a chipmunk, as all were welcome in her home.
At Linda’s request, she was cremated under the compassionate care of Hardman Family Funeral Home and Hardman Cremation Services of Weston and her cremains will be scattered by her loving family at a spot of her choosing. On-line condolences and life stories in memory of Linda may be expressed at hardmanfamilyfuneralhome.com.
