Departed: 03/24/2024 (Lewiston)
Obituary Preview: Ethel Grace Blackwell, age 95, of Lewiston died Sunday, March 24, 2024, at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport. She was born July 29, 1928, in Mildmay, Ontario, the daughter of the late Charles and Oleva (Schmidt) Jasper and they moved to Lewiston shortly thereafter.
Ethel attended Stella Niagara where she became an accomplished pianist in her teenage years. She memorized the Mozart Concerto, which was fifty-four pages, and played it at a recital with one of her teachers. After High School she received a music scholarship to Rosary College in Buffalo.
She was a church organist and pianist at the Forestview Church of God for many years. She subsequently was the organist at many area churches, including Calgary Lutheran. She learned to master the pipe organ and there were many memorable moments in which her daughters would watch her practice in awe. She also played at many weddings and funerals and taught piano in her home.
Ethel's biggest enjoyment was when she transformed her music career in the 1960's by playing piano at many area entertainment venues such as Schrafts, Lotitos, The Park Hotel, as well as many places in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara on the Lake. She was in her heyday at this time and developed a faithful and enthusiastic following. Ethel was known for her glamour, beautiful smile, and sensational piano music. She developed a strong sense of independence and was bursting with pride when she bought her first new car with her earnings.
She raised her four children and continued to reside in Lewiston. In the 1970's she frequented The Coat of Arms in Lewiston where she listened to her friend Jerry D'Amico and his jazz band. Ethel always enjoyed listening to other musicians perform, often noting what key a piece was in and would critique the music as only a fellow musician could. Ethel loved country music, jazz, classical and gospel to name a few. In her later years one of her most enjoyable activities was being driven by her caretakers along the river and marveling at its' beauty.
She was a devoted and hardworking mother and will be remembered fondly by all who knew and appreciated her.
Ethel is survived by her children, Jeff (Patti) Blackwell, Sandy Blackwell Yates, and Sharon Blackwell; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a loving son, Robert Blackwell and a brother, Charles Douglas Jasper.

A shimmering light and inspiration for all, Margaret (Margie) Hansen Casper, age 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Lewiston on March 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. The oldest of five siblings, Margie was born in Perth Amboy , NJ on February 12, 1931, to George and Leola Hansen. After the tragic loss of her mother in 1940, Margie was raised by her father and loving stepmother Eleanor Hansen. She was no stranger to grief and during her long life, Margie mourned the loss of her parents George, Leola and Eleanor Hansen, her beloved husband Theodore (Ted) Casper, brother George (Sonny) Hansen Jr., daughter in law Susan Casper, granddaughter Ashely Gray, great grandson PFC Colten Lowe, nephews David and Dennis Hansen, and niece Margo Hansen.
Margie is survived by her devoted children Lee (late Susan) Casper and Joyce Casper. She was a loving and supportive grandmother to Elizabeth Hartz, Bryan Hartz, Joshua Casper, Jennifer Lowe, Kevin Casper, Bethany Casper, and Jennette Kestel. She was adored by her brother Ralph (Kathleen) Hansen, her sisters Karen Miller and Carol (George) Regan and sister-in-law JoAnn Hansen. Margie was the proud great-grandmother of sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Margie graduated from New Brunswick High School and New Brunswick Secretarial School. She resided in Edison and Franklin Township NJ for many years prior to moving to Lewiston. In New Jersey, Margie worked as Secretary to the Engineering Department at Carborundum Company in Keasby. She was also employed as an Expeditor/Typist/Scheduler for the Purchasing department at St. Peter’s Medical Center and as a Clerk/Typist at the Central Credit Bureau of Central, NJ. Margie worked in the Billing Department at Channel Lumber and as an Administrative Assistant at Wenzel’s Colonial Shoppe in New Brunswick. In Lewiston, Margie worked for the Village Vendor and was a receptionist for Dr. Primo.
A woman of faith, Margie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown. She embodied the “fruit of the spirit” as described in Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forgiveness, kindness, gentleness, and self-control”. She readily admitted, however, that her sweet tooth sometimes challenged her “self-control.” Margie always appreciated visits from her church family and especially enjoyed thoughtful conversations with Bob Hagel, her pastor. A good soul with a giving heart, Margie volunteered for meals on Wheels and at St. Mary’s Hospital. She also helped at the Lewiston Senior Center and was a Cub Scout volunteer. Margie enjoyed serving on committees at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, helping at church bazaars and rummage sales and in the children’s nursery. She was a member of the Red Hatters Society and enjoyed having lunch and playing Bingo with friends at the Senior Center. An avid sports fan, Margie enjoyed watching the Sabres, Buffalo Bills, and Alabama football games with her family. She was also the best cheerleader during sports events for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
It is no wonder that Margie loved lighthouses, as she was a beacon to all who knew her. She had a twinkle in her eye and a smile that could light up a room. Margie was a gracious friend and good neighbor who welcomed all with open arms. She loved hosting special occasions and always cherished her time with family. She especially loved the laughter and company of her great-grandchildren William and Logan. She was an animal lover who had a special place in her heart for her precious kitten, Lulu. Margie loved the warmth of the sunshine, the sounds of windchimes in the breeze, and the sandy beaches of Panama City Beach Florida where she and Ted spent many winters.
Margie touched the hearts of everyone she met, including her Hospice Care Team, as well as the staff at Niagara Hospice House. She was made to feel special by her personal aides Joelle, Jade, and Laura and made a new friend in the baby wallaby she loved to cuddle. The entire family will always be thankful for these caring and wonderful people who went above and beyond to make our Margie comfortable during her most challenging days. It was during the most difficult times that the amazing strength of her character was truly demonstrated. Margie’s shoes will be hard to fill. She will be sorely missed but the love and light she shared throughout her life will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Margie’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100 Church Street, Youngstown, NY 14094. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing to remember Margie in a special way may make memorial donations to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr. Lockport, NY 14094, The First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral or memorial service. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries can be longer and more detailed than those published in newspapers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to learn about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, which can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that their life story is told accurately. However, it's essential to keep it updated and share it with loved ones so they can finalize the details after your passing.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for a newspaper publication. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or edits can be made if there are errors or inaccuracies in the original publication. However, this may not always be possible, especially with printed newspapers.
