Obituary Preview: Mrs. Darlene K. (Swanton) Gardner of Millington, Michigan (Arbela Twp.) passed away Saturday April 23, 2022, surrounded by her family at the age of 71.
Darlene was born in Flint, Michigan on December 20, 1950, and was the daughter of the late Donald and Pauline (Nelson) Swanton. Darlene married William Gardner Jr on July 12, 1969, and together they have celebrated 52 years of marriage and many wonderful memories.
Darlene leaves her husband Bill. She also leaves her children; William (Cathleen) Gardner III, Tonya (Ken) Shumate, and Paul (Jennie) Gardner, her six granddaughters, Krysten, Ashley, Toni, Avery, Brenna, Meghan, her two great grandsons Hudson and Nathan. Darlene leaves her sister, Dottie Perkins, and a brother Duwayne Swanton, several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Besides her parents Darlene is preceded in death by a sister Diane, and a brother Donald.

Daniel (Dan) W. Nowland Sr. - June 07, 1929 - April 22, 2022

Obituary Preview: Millington Twp – Daniel “Dan” W. Nowland Sr. 92, our hard working, determined, and caring husband, father, and friend passed away on Friday, April 22, 2022, surrounded by family at Ascension – St Mary’s in Saginaw.
Dan was born on June 7, 1929, in Akron, Michigan to Wallace and Eda (Post) Nowland. After high school, Dan went to college and honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Afterwards, Dan worked as a pipe fitter with Buick for 33 years and was an active member of the U.A.W. Local 599. Dan then enjoyed his retirement of 41 years spending time with family. He met the former Jessie Crosby, they dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage in 1961. Together they shared 61 years of marriage and countless memories.
He is survived by his wife, Jessie; and children: Diane (Robert) Wood, Daniel W. Nowland Jr., Bethany (Malcolm) Martin, Dennis (Gaile) Vollmar, Allen & Donna Vollmar, Alexa Bell, and Alvin Vollmar. He also leaves 8 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Special friend Kim Nowland. He is preceded in death by his son, Christopher Lee Vollmar and son in-law Alan Bell.
Those wishing to make donation in Dan’s memory are asked to consider the Millington Food Pantry.
Services to celebrate Dan’s life will be held at Hanlin Funeral Home (4823 Main Street, Millington, MI 48746) at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. Pastor Jim Mellish  last will preside. The family will receive visitors from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Immediately following, the family invites guests for a luncheon at the Millington Community Center (8705 State Rd, Millington, MI 48746). Dan will be laid to rest with private burial service at Brookside Cemetery in Fairgrove, MI at 2:30 p.m.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Gertrude M. (Mc Kee) Martin of Vassar, Michigan passed away Monday April 18, 2022, with family at her side, at the age of 91.
The daughter of the late Omer and Geraldine (Howell) Mc Kee Gertrude was born in Turner, Michigan on July 9, 1930. Gertrude was employed with Chevrolet of Bay City, and she retired after 33 years of employment with General Motors. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Vassar. For several years Gertrude served as the church Secretary, she helped, also with the youth group Awana Club, and would often play the piano for church. Gertrude also loved reading and had a large personal library.
Left to cherish her many wonderful memories is her family. Two children; daughter and son in-law, Barbara (Willard) Pochoday, and a son and daughter in-law, Gary (Jan) Martin. She also leaves 5 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, a sister Nancy (Bob) Davis. Gertrude leaves also several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.  Besides her parents, Gertrude is preceded in death by her husband John, grandson Kyle Martin, and a brother Alton Mc Kee.
The family will receive friends at the Hanlin Funeral Home in Millington, Michigan on Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and for a brief time on Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until services begin. Funeral service for Gertrude will be on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Vassar, with the burial to follow at the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Saginaw, Michigan. David was born on January 1, 1956 in Saginaw, Michigan and was the son of the late Henry and Donna (Mc Creery) Reinert. David grew up in the Frankenmuth and Vassar areas. He was a truck driver for many years retiring from driving truck with a steel company. David could fix anything, he loved old cars and tractors. David was also very active in his church the Watertown Center Bible Church.
David leaves his son and daughter in-law; Michael & Angie Reinert, his step-mom Lisa Reinert, a half-brother Andre (Jennifer) Reinert, longtime friend Sheryl, and a host of family extended family and friends. Besides his parents, David is preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia, and Barbara.

Mary C. Hoffman was born in Flint, MI, on June 28th, 1943, to Nicholas and Ardath (Root) Hoffman. Mary’s caring nature led to her education and degree in nursing. She then cared for patients and their families as case manager with Wellspring Nursing Home for over 25 years. Outside of work, Mary enjoyed gardening, canning, watching Fox News “The 5”, traveling, and visiting Disney Theme Parks. She was a passionate University of Michigan and Alabama University football fan too. Further, Mary was an animal lover and cared deeply for her four-legged companions. Above all, Mary loved her family, especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her children: Joe (Adorna) Mallard, Theresa (Terry) Cooper, Sabrina (James) Burris, and Gabrielle (Mark) Rose; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Michael Hoffman; special aunt, Mary Root; cat, Mater; and dogs, Thor, Billy, and Gigi.
Mary’s family will welcome guests to Hanlin Funeral Home (4823 Main St., Millington, MI 48746) on Wednesday, April 20th, 2022, from 4-7 P.M. Following on Thursday, April 21st, 2022, Mary will be taken to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish (334 Division St., Vassar, MI 48768) for her 1:00 P.M. William "Bill" Spencer - November 13, 1940 - April 10, 2022

Obituary Preview: Millington- William “Bill” Spencer, age 81, our strong, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2022, at his home.
Bill was born in Pontiac, MI on November 13, 1940, to the late William and Rosemary (Chambers) Spencer. He met the love of his life Rhenna (Berry) on a blind date. On December 3, 1960, they were joined in marriage and together they celebrated 61 years. Bill worked for General Motors, UAW Local 5960, and UAW International Staff Region 1 for several years. He was a faithful member of the Millington Church of God. He enjoyed fishing, camping, working in his workshop, and classic cars. Bill will be so dearly missed.
Bill is forever loved by his wife; Rhenna; two children: Brian (Gabirele) Spencer, and Duane (Sherry) Spencer; three grandchildren: Zachary Bahr, Cody Spencer, and Chirista Spencer; two great-grandchildren: Henry Bahr, and Hudson Bahr; one sister Lenora Butler. As well as several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Surprenant Marsden of the Vassar and Millington area passed away Friday, April 8, 2022, peacefully with her daughter at her side. She was 98.
Liz was born April 30, 1923, to the late Steve and Anna (Krowski) Sziber in Linwood, Michigan. In 1943 she married the late John Surprenant and they resided in Vassar, MI. Liz worked for Buchmans Bakery and the A&P Grocery Store for many years. She enjoyed her grandkids, crafting, and playing cards. Some may remember her for serving the delicious cookies at her daughter’s store, The Country Shoppes in Millington, MI during their seasonal open houses. In February of 1971 Liz married the late Harold Marsden and spent the next 30 years in Florida before moving back to Millington, MI in 2003. Liz will be dearly missed.
Liz is forever loved by her daughter, Bev (Mike) Bassett; Daughter-in-law, Judy Surprenant; Grandchildren: Julie (Mark) Rude, Jeff (Jessie) Bassett, Jennett Surprenant, Mark (Sara) Surprenant; Great-grandchildren: Brandon and Tyler Rude, Brooklyn and Brycen Bassett, and David Surprenant. As well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Mary was born in Bay City, MI on October 6, 1930 to parents Roland and Mary Schultz. She graduated Vassar High School with the Class of 1948. In July of 1956 she married her late husband George Ray Owens. Together they had 36 wonderful years of marriage. Mary worked for Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland in Frankenmuth, MI for 20 years. She also ran her own restaurant in Vassar, MI called “Mama Bears” for 5 years. Mary was known to be a great cook but especially known for her potato salad, and homemade pies. When Mary wasn’t cooking or working, she loved to sew. She was known to be the “family organizer” . Everyone went to her to plan all the big events happening. Above all Mary just loved to be with her family. She will be missed dearly.
Mary is forever loved by her children: Paul (Debie) Baxter, Brenda (William) Cook, and Steven Owens (Barb Warnke); five grandchildren: Steven (Courtney) Owens, Shannon Owens, Mark Wolverton (Jess Day), James (Amy) Baxter and Ryan Owens; sister: Lora Callender, as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Obituary Preview: Millington - Theodore “Ted” Wooldridge, age 64, our helpful, giving, and loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend passed away suddenly on Sunday, April 3, 2022, in Sevierville, TN.
Ted was born in Somerville, TN, on July 31, 1957. He graduated from Millington High School with the Class of 1975, where he was a member of the Millington Cardinals football and track teams. On July 18, 1997, Ted married Shelly Brown, and together they shared 24 wonderful years. Ted retired from Super Foods, Inc./Nash Finch, Co., in 2010, after 35 years of service. Never one to sit still, Ted lent his skills in landscaping at Willow Springs Golf and Country Club. Further, he loved time spent outdoors doing various activities such as: landscaping, cutting wood, and yard work. He also enjoyed watching grandkids play sports, golfing, a game of cornhole, puzzles, fishing, watching his westerns, and playing softball in Fostoria. Ted was a passionate and devout Michigan Wolverines fan, who “bled Maize & Blue”, and never missed a game. Ted was fond of the simpler things in life; a day spent working outside, family BBQs, and listening to Bob Segar.
Ted is forever loved by his wife, Shelly; children: Joshua (Angelique) Wooldridge, Nicole (Craig) Stiff, and Tyler Wooldridge; grandchildren: Anika, Jackson, Ian, Emmitt, and Alexis; and his four-legged “Grand-pups”, Reggie and Hazel; father-and-mother-in-law, Henry & Jill Brown; brother-in-law, Mark (Wendy) Brown. Siblings: Marty Northern, Joya Hudgins, Camelo Northern, Henry Northern, Kim (Perry) Morrison, David (Rhonda) Northern, and Shelly (Tommy) Harper; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.

Connie Rae Allendorfer - June 08, 1947 - April 01, 2022

Obituary Preview: Connie Rae Allendorfer (McPherson) passed away peacefully on April 1st, 2022. She was 74 years old.
Connie was born to Harry and Lena McPherson on June 8th, 1947 in Flint, MI. She graduated from Millington High School in 1965. She married her high school sweetheart, Ben Allendorfer, on March 20th, 1965. She worked for many years at the Millington Arbela District Library teaching story hour. She also taught catechism and was an election volunteer. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, and a member of St. Francis X Cabrini Catholic Church in Vassar.
Connie was a beacon of kindness to all who met her and considered herself a “tough old bird”. She always put others first. She enjoyed looking at lighthouses throughout Michigan, searching for bald eagles, going to the casino, taking pictures (she always had a camera in her hand), making snowmen, blowing bubbles with her grandkids, cheering on the Michigan football and basketball teams, watching The Waltons, and listening to country music and Danny O’Donnell. She loved to sit outside on her swing with her friends and family, sharing stories. Her favorite color was green. She grew to share her husband’s love of German Shepherds. She loved Christmas and dressing up as Mrs. Claus. She made friends with the local Amish community and loved when they came to sing Christmas carols to her. Above all, Connie was happiest when she was surrounded by her family.
Connie is forever loved by her husband of 57 years, Ben Allendorfer; children Barb (Mike) deCheubel, Bonnie (Ed) Roesner, Ben (Tonya) Allendorfer, and Brandon (Tara) Allendorfer; son-in-law Mike Jackett; grandchildren Steven Gruehn, Azurah (Billy) Karl, Tyler (Brianna) Sweers, Troy deCheubel, Andrew (Danielle) Jackett, Emily (Devin McDowell) Allendorfer, Bradley Allendorfer, Lucas Jackett, Karsten Allendorfer, and Blaine Allendorfer; great grandson Grayson Sweers; siblings Harry (Sharon) McPherson, Bill (Faith) McPherson, and Sandi Bare; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Connie is preceded in death by her daughter, Becky Jackett; her parents, and several close friends.

Catherine Sue Foote was born in Saginaw on January 31, 1960, to parents Richard and Sue (Slemp) Foote. She grew up alongside her brother, Scot, and graduated from MIllington High School with the Class of 1978. Cathy met Michael Hemingway and they were united in marriage on September 18, 1992. Together they celebrated 29 years of marriage and countless memories. She worked as an insurance agent for AAA in Vassar and Caro. Cathy was a friend to many and had the gift to make all feel welcome and at home. She enjoyed camping (especially at Krystal Lake Campground), was a passionate animal lover, and her eye for "fashion over function".
Cathy is forever loved by her husband, Mike; son, Justin (Patty) Pavlicek; grandson, Adam; parents, Richard and Sue Foote; brother, Scot Foote; and extended family and many friends. She is preceded in death by infant sister, Ruth; grandparents; and her father-and-mother-in-law.

Marilyn C. Daenzer - December 10, 1939 - March 25, 2022

Obituary Preview: Millington - Marilyn Claire Daenzer, age 82, a life-long Millington resident, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday, March 25, 2022.
Marilyn Claire Heuchert, was born on December 10, 1939, in Millington, to the late Gustav and the late Dorothy (MacKeegan) Heuchert. She was raised alongside her sister Carol and graduated from Millington High School with the Class of 1957. Marilyn met Clarence Daenzer in high school; they dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on February 28, 1958, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Millington. Together they shared 36 years of marriage, countless memories, and raised seven children. Marilyn is now reunited with Clarence who entered eternal rest in 1994.
Marilyn was deeply devoted to and loved spending time with her family. She was passionate about card games (especially Canasta, Hand & Foot, and Phase 10). She loved baking with her grandchildren and shared their affection for music. She was an active member of the church, involved with Dorcas Society, a past president of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) and a member of the choir. Marilyn was a true and loyal friend who enthusiastically welcomed every visitor. Above all, Marilyn was dedicated to her Lord.
She is forever loved by her children: Julie (Eugene) Weiss, Mike (Tammy) Daenzer, Patty (Dan) Petzold, Pete Daenzer, Sherry (Russ) Ill, Tim (Connie) Daenzer, and Karen Duckworth; a beloved grandmother to 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; a dear sister-in-law to Ruth McNiel; and will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and very dear friends.

Jim was born in Flint, Michigan, on November 24, 1980, to James and Pamela (Laird) Mangold. Jim graduated from Millington High School Class of 2003. Jim married the love of his life Shannon on September 1, 2001. Together they celebrated 20 years of marriage and have a beautiful daughter together. Jim was passionate about giving back to his community, boating, cooking, late night infomercial shopping, the casino, gardening, collecting gnomes, being an American, and always giving those who were sick like him the Hope to keep going and fighting.  Above all, Jim’s greatest joy was being devoted to and spending time with his family and friends. Jim’s take charge, life of the party, and jokester personality will be missed dearly by so many.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Beulah Burns, age 86, of Millington, went to be with our Lord and Savior on March 18, 2022.
Beulah was born on October 19, 1935, in Arbela Township, to Roy and Beatrice (Adams) Hunt. Beulah was a 1953 graduate of Millington High School. Less than a year later, on January 30, 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Lyle Burns. Together they celebrated 65 years of marriage. Lyle predeceased her in 2019. They had four children: Cindy (Dave) Simon, Christy Burns, Ronald (Kim) Burns, and Amy (John) Louks. They have 10 grandchildren: Cherie (Joe) Payne, Dan (SheyLa) Burton, Adam (Tammy) Simon, Aaron (Jessica) Simon, Joshua Burns, Gus (Kassie) Burns, Nathan (Lynnzee) Burns, Zachary (Rachel) Burns, Tom (Christina) Louks, and Rebecca Grace Louks, and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lyle, brothers, William Zimmerman, Raymond Hunt, Paul Hunt; sisters, Dorothy Klier, Doris Toth, Donna Lund, and Luella Ratza, Hilda Gray. Sister Margaret Gray survives her. She was also predeceased by her great grandson, Samuel Simon. Beulah was a hardworking farm wife, wonderful mother, great cook! But most of all, she was a faithful follower of Jesus. Knowing Jesus influenced everything that Beulah said and did throughout her life. While Beulah’s family and friends will surely miss her, we are comforted by the fact that she is in Heaven with Jesus and her beloved husband Lyle, and we long for the day that we are reunited with them and all other family members and friends who have gone before them!
Beulah was a member of the Richfield Church of the Nazarene, the Cass River Camp of the Gideons International, and the Millington-Arbela Historical Society.

William was born in Chesaning, Michigan, on February 28, 1943, to the late William and Florence (Collier) Mangold. Bill graduated from Millington High School, Class of 1961. Bill was united in marriage to the love of his life Lillie (Bailey) on January 20, 1962. Together they celebrated 60 years of marriage. They have four children. He worked for General Motors for 42 years as a skills trades man. You could always find Bill either out in his shed woodworking, cutting down trees, camping, kayaking, or riding his tractor. Bill enjoyed volunteering for things and for many years loved helping at St. Paul Lutherans fish fries. Bill also had a special knack for helping all his grandkids with all their homework. He would even go sit in their classes to stay up on what they were learning. If you ask the grandkids he was best known for his amazing egg McMuffins known to be better than McDonalds. Most of all though Bill loved to spend time with his family. He will be dearly missed by so many.

Sue enjoyed candy making, crafting, sewing, and spending time in the sun. Above all, Sue’s greatest joy was being devoted to and spending time with her family. Sue will be so dearly missed.

Obituary Preview: Dorothy “Kathy” Carruthers Kline, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2022. Kathy was born in Standish, MI to Grant and Hazel (Hastings) Carruthers on September 22, 1926, the fifth of six siblings. She was married to Elwin (Al) Kline on May 1, 1951, noting that she “saw a good-looking man in green pants and had to know who that was!” when they started working at Kroger.  Starting out together in Virginia with her Marine, they eventually moved to Buell Rd in Millington for the majority of their 59 years together. Al preceded Kathy in death in 2010.  She is greatly missed and is survived by her five children: Jeanne (Brian) Vuillemot, Brenda Kline, twins-Randy (Suzanne) Kline and Rhonda Kline, and Ellen (Mitch) Perry. Kathy has six grandchildren: Kelly (Tom) Coe, Grant (Jenn) Vuillemot, Chad (Ashlee) Kline, Stephanie (Carlos) Contreras, Logan (Elenie) Perry, and Hunter Perry. She is also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Isaac, Lorenzo, and Emmalina Contreras, twins-Alexander and Elwin Vuillemot, and Elizabeth Perry.  “Aunt Katie” is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Kathy enjoyed many years of activities with a multitude of dear friends in the American Legion and Auxiliary post in Millington and all across Michigan for veteran’s causes and the America they were dedicated to and believed in. Through the years Kathy worked as an LPN in a maternity ward and in a convalescent center, she also worked for Kroger, The Millington Herald, Kmart, The Exit Restaurant and Hotel, Meals on Wheels, and was a foster parent and senior citizen caregiver. Kathy made many new and caring friends when she moved to Caro Senior Commons in 2013 and Charter Senior Assisted Living in Bay City in July, 2021.  She loved feeding the birds and the squirrels, visiting the casino, playing scrabble, hot coffee with friends and family, and her “Grand-dog Moose” who snuggled with Kathy during visits for the last 5 years which made many residents smile. “Family was everything” she said, and visitors, especially overnight, would make her day! In her 95.5 blessed years she traveled to numerous states, the UP, and a once in a lifetime trip to Israel. She kept her memories alive with hundreds of photographs to share.
Preceded by her parents and husband, Kathy has seen many pass and we are sure she is celebrating in heaven as we speak, with Al, brothers Jess and Buck (Hilde) Carruthers, and sisters Hope Carruthers, Noel (Al) Hart, and Jean (John) Capp.  The family sincerely thanks those individuals who befriended and helped Kathy in her advanced age at Caro Senior Commons, Charter Senior Living, Americans Hospice and Nurse Nancy, all whom provided nurturing and respectful quality care.

Jeremy was a passionate reader, his favorite novel being Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, an avid fan of Jeopardy!, listening to NPR, and listening to his extensive, eclectic collection of music. Above all, Jeremy's greatest joy was being devoted to and spending time with his family and friends. Jeremy will be lovingly remembered as a fun and a joyful person to be around. Our quick-witted, well-liked friend will be missed dearly.

Ed met the love of his life, the former Ellen (Bonnie) Rose in 1958.  They were united in marriage on May 21, 1960. Together they  celebrated 62 years of marriage, raising their two children, and making countless memories as Ed coordinated many family events. After high school, Ed began his career with Eaton-Greedy Foundry in Vassar, Michigan; a position he held for over 30 years. Outside of work, Ed was passionate about hunting, fishing, and especially snowmobiling. Above all, Ed’s greatest joy was being devoted to and spending time with his family. Ed will be lovingly remembered as a jack of all trades and an exceptional provider. Our go-getter, best dad ever, grandfather, and friend will be missed dearly.

After the Air Force he went to work for General Motors for 30 years. Carl was a devoted usher and member at Millington Church of God for over 30 years. You could always find Carl either hunting, fishing, gardening, trapping, or woodworking. Most of all though Carl loved to spend time with his family. He will be dearly missed by so many.

Obituary Preview: MILLINGTON - Violet Adele Hornfeld, age 102, our kind, gentle, hard-working and faithful, mother, grandmother, aunt, neighbor, and friend, passed peacefully into her Savior’s arms on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022.
Violet Adele Johnson was born in Detroit, on November 13, 1919, to the late William and Mildred (Whitcomb) Johnson. She graduated from Detroit Southwestern High School and began her work with the Grand Truck Railroad as medical secretary to the chief surgeon. In 1942, Violet was united in marriage to the love of her life Cliff Hornfeld. Together they celebrated 59 years of marriage, raising their three sons: Gary, Roy, and Jim, and made countless memories. No stranger to hard work, she enjoyed life on the farm in Millington, raising her sons, and tending to her beautiful flower gardens. Violet loved the Lord deeply and shared her gift of music as the organist with Grace Lutheran Church in Vassar for over 50 years. After retiring as the organist, she and Cliff joined St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was a member for over 20 years. Above all, Violet was passionate about spending time with and devoted to her family.
Violet is forever loved by her sons: Gary (Trudy) Hornfeld, Roy (Susan) Hornfeld, and Jim (Terri) Hornfeld; grandchildren: Tracy, Nathan, Chris, Danielle, Courtney, Laura and Matt; sister-in-law and friend Betty Sandelbach; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Cliff (d. 2002); brother, Burton Johnson; and best pal and companion Molly.
