Departed: 06/19/2015 (Winthrop)
Obituary Preview: Brasher Falls – It is with great sadness that family, friends, co-workers and community members mourn the loss of Douglas J. Villnave Sr., 51, who passed away unexpectedly Friday, June 19, 2015, at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Doug was born on August 13, 1963, in Massena to the late Myrland L. and Hazel B. Busky Villnave. He graduated from St. Lawrence Central School in 1981 and from SUNY Canton in 1983 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He married his soulmate, Nicole A. Irwin, on October 6, 1990, at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence with Fr. Decker celebrating. This is their 25th year of a blessed union filled with unending love, laughter and friendship that will remain in their hearts forever. He started working at NuMed in Hopkinton in October 1984, earning a position as vice president of Research and Development. He began there shortly after the company started. In his 31 years at the company he was instrumental in many of the patents that were granted, and developed many lifesaving devices, primarily in the field of pediatric interventional cardiology. He worked directly with physicians from around the world, and was respected by all. He travelled extensively, and brought the North Country with him wherever he went. He was the “Longest running member of NuMed and we are honored to have him.”
Doug played hockey in the position of goalie in high school, for Canton ATC Hockey in college and later in the Men’s Adult Hockey League. He also played on the Jug Softball Team for many years. He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence, where he served as an altar boy in his youth, and where he later married his beautiful wife, Nicole.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, cooking for his family and taking car rides. His greatest joy was raising three beautiful children with Nicole. Doug was blessed with a lighthearted, happy personality and with the ability to converse with anyone. He made those around him laugh, joking that he was the “toughest Hombre in North Lawrence.” His children call their dad their best friend and their hero, and Morgan, his only daughter, said she will always be “Daddy’s Girl!” He was an amazing dad who taught his children to always do the right thing and instilled in them old-school traditions. Their camp at Blake was a family meeting place and the perfect spot to create lasting memories that will never be forgotten. All in all, it is hard to believe we will ever see the “LIKES” of another Doug in our lives.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Nicole; his cherished children, Douglas J. Villnave Jr. of Liverpool, Morgan E. Villnave of Brasher and Buffalo and Ethan T. Villnave of Brasher Falls; two older brothers, Marlowe and wife Joyce Villnave of Cicero and David Villnave of North Lawrence; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Sonny and Susan Irwin of North Lawrence; as well as treasured friends, many nieces and nephews and the entire Irwin family, whom Doug treasured.

Jean Dinsmore - September 19, 2013 - May 04, 2014

Departed: 05/04/2014 (Winthrop)
Obituary Preview: MISSOULA – Elizabeth Jean Graves Dinsmore passed away peacefully listening to Bach on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Edgewood Vista in Missoula of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Jean was born in Henderson, Kentucky on April 19, 1923, to James Cleveland and Teressa Leary Graves. She grew up in Cleveland and Gralea Farm near Chardon, Ohio. She loved spending her summers with family in rural upstate New York.
Jean was proud of her education from Shaker High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Skidmore College, where she was an art major. She worked at a drafting company after graduation while awaiting the return of the love of her life, Army Capt. Robert E. Dinsmore from the Pacific Theater in WWII. Following the war, they married on May 11, 1946, in Chardon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Their early years were spent in Kansas, where Bob attended Kansas University, and they had an extended honeymoon in “Sunflower Village”, which was a tarpaper postwar family housing complex.
After Bob’s graduation, they settled in northeastern Ohio in their family home with their children Jane and Jim. There, Jean completed her master’s in education. She taught first grade in Chardon until the family moved to East Aurora, NY where Jean completed her 25 years of teaching, before retiring to Montana.
She had a log home built on the side of Sugar Loaf looking up Lower Willow Creek. If there was a chill in the air, there was a fire in the wood stove. She doted on her dog and cat, and took great joy in the bluebirds that nested behind her house. She braided beautiful rag rugs and painted a wall mural depicting Montana mountains in her hallway. Picnics with family and friends high in the mountains were joyful days and driving out over horrendous roads in her Jeep even at 80 years of age was a “piece of cake.”
Jean was a dedicated community volunteer. She spent fulfilling years reading with the children of Hall and Drummond Elementary Schools. She was a member of the Read and Feed Book Club at the Drummond Community Library, where she also shelved countless books. Jean and several Hall ladies became the self proclaimed Hall Beautification Committee planting lilacs, flowers and bright corners. She was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Drummond.
She will be livingly remembered by her children, Jane (Roy) Snyder and Jim (Becky) Dinsmore; her grandchildren, Bill (Meg) McCabe, Patrick McCabe, Jim (Lisa) McCabe, Anne (TJ) Ostler and Kate Dinsmore; her great-grandchildren, Ashley, Bill, Alexia and Skye McCabe and Jackson and Eli Ostler; and by her dog, Maggie. Jean was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Bob.
Graveside services will be at St. Patrick Cemetery, Brasher Falls on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 11:00 AM with Fr. Garry Giroux officiating. Memorials may be sent to the Drummond Elementary, District 11, P.O. Box 349 Drummond, MT 59832, or to Hall Elementary, District 8, 109 W. Main St., Hall, MT 59837. Please make note that this for the “Jean Dinsmore Reading Fund.” She kept the following poem titled “The Coin” by Sara Teasdale tucked in her dresser mirror: “Into my heart’s treasure I slipped a coin; That time cannot take nor a thief purloin; Oh better than the minting of a gold-crowned king; Is the safe-kept memory of a lovely thing.”

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy for future generations.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on what information to include.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and names of surviving family members. You may also want to include hobbies, achievements, or other personal details that celebrate the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform where it will be published. Generally, it's best to keep it concise, around 150-200 words. However, some online obituary platforms may allow for longer tributes or stories.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful for those who read it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Check the submission guidelines for the specific publication or platform you're using. Some may require you to submit the obituary through their website, while others may accept email or phone submissions. Be sure to follow their formatting and word count guidelines.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while print newspapers may charge by the line or word count. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and accomplishments. Keep in mind that your loved ones may still need to review and finalize the details after your passing.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, often including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. It's typically used when a full obituary is not desired or cannot be prepared in time for publication.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death and providing biographical information. A eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service, usually focusing on the person's personality, accomplishments, and relationships.

Can I republish an obituary from another source?
