Maryellen Teresa Bashioum - December 22, 1938 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Purcellville)
Obituary Preview: Maryellen Teresa Bashioum, aged 85, beloved wife, mother and friend, passed into eternity on April 4th, 2024 in her home at Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, VA. She was born on December 22nd, 1938 in Somerville, MA to Robert E. and Gladys (O’Hara) McKelvey. Maryellen often shared fond memories of her multigenerational family home and her years studying at Boston University, where she enjoyed adventures with her sorority sisters and music filled soirées featuring an old piano loaded into the back of a pickup truck with her sweetheart, Douglas Lee Bashioum, and his fraternity friends. She laughed to recall how Doug was thrown into the (then) filthy Charles River by his fraternity brothers after he proposed to her.
In June of 1960, Maryellen graduated with a degree in education and married Doug the day after he graduated with an aeronautical engineering degree from MIT. They began their life together in Kansas City, MO, where they welcomed their first two children, then moved in 1963 to Long Island, NY, where two more children joined the family. In 1972, making good on her threat of consequences if she heard any more complaints about the Long Island traffic, Maryellen made the executive decision to sell their home and move the family to Reston, VA, where she encouraged Doug to pursue a job offer from Mitre, a company his MIT friends had told him about. In Reston, a fifth child was born.
Both Maryellen and Doug worked for Mitre until they retired, she as an executive secretary and he as an engineer. Retirement did not mean slowing down. If anything, Maryellen’s and Doug’s whirlwind calendar picked up speed. Getting together took some planning, but when you were with them, you had their full attention! In 2008 Doug and Maryellen moved to Cary, NC and after Doug’s passing in 2019, Maryellen returned to VA to be near her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
If you spent any time with Maryellen you knew her signature smile, ever present chuckle, musical laughter and that she possessed a beautiful soprano singing voice! You probably soon noticed what she called her fey, Boston Irish sense of humor. (Most of her kids and grandkids have it, too!) But the thing that stood out the most was her warmth and friendliness. Maryellen loved people! She could be quick to offer advice or just as quick to give a patient, gentle, listening ear. Many of us felt the blessing of her unconditional acceptance and steady encouragement. And where disagreement arose, she listened humbly. When faced with another’s suffering, she drew from a deep well of empathy, formed by her own transformation of pain and suffering into trust and hope in God’s goodness to turn sorrow into eventual joy. She expressed her love by giving generously to her family and by throwing her considerable energy and people and organizing skills into serving the groups she involved herself in over the years. An incomplete list includes Girl Scouts, Emmaus, Cursillo, Engaged Encounter, World Wide Marriage Encounter, Network of Biblical Story Tellers, The Christian Family Movement, Teams of Our Lady, The Third Option, acting with Doug as host couple at Elder-hostel at Black Rock Retreat Center in PA, and deep involvement in the Catholic communities, choirs and Bible studies wherever she lived: at Thomas A Becket and St John Neumann in Reston, VA, St. Michael’s and Mother Teresa’s in Cary, NC and most recently St. Teresa’s in Ashburn, VA, with its large community of members living at Ashby Ponds. During her brief four years at Ashby Ponds she made many beloved friends, including the ladies in her Catholic Lunch Bunch, the Walking With Purpose Bible Study, the Conservative Club she helped to found, and the people in the musical theater, Encore choir and Surviving Spouse groups.
Maryellen was preceded in death by her parents, her younger sister, Patricia Pugh, and elder brother, Robert McKelvey, by her daughters, Nancy Kidwell and Lea-Anne Bashioum and by Doug, her beloved husband of 59 years. She leaves behind her three sons, Chris (Leslie) of Purcellville, VA, Mike (Jennilynne) of Sterling, VA, and Jon of Henrico, VA, her fifteen grandchildren, Luke (Esmeralda) Kidwell, Shenoah Kidwell, Morgan Kidwell, Dylan (Courtney) Kidwell, Abigail (Matt) Kusterer, Asaph Bashioum, Amy (Ben) Guthrie, Peter Bashioum, Katie Bashioum, Michelle (Seth) Adkinson, Jake (Anna) Bashioum, Travis (Nicole) Bashioum, Bella Bashioum, Sophie Bashioum and Silas Bashioum, and seventeen great-grandchildren, with two yet to be born. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and sorely missed her husband.
Maryellen held a deep trust in God and was totally willing to follow wherever she thought God was leading her. She did not fear suffering or death.
Maryellen is much loved and will be missed by her family and her friends.

She was taken from us too soon as she brought love and joy to everyone around her. Her family could not have asked for a better daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, and grandmother. She was not only our matriarch, but she was our rock. As she lay passing on her final day, it was not only her family who comforted her, as with all her remaining and waning strength she reached out to let us know everything would be okay, conveying that while her body was failing, her spirit would persevere through all of us. She was not just beautiful on the outside, but infinitely beautiful on the inside.
She was born in Dingess, WV in 1951 to Tennis Sr. and Martely Mullins who instilled in her a strong work ethic and close family ties. She was a coal miner’s daughter who grew up in bucolic Chapmanville, West Virginia and attended a school with only four classrooms. She was always fun loving and a bit rambunctious, and even once snuck into a venomous snake handling church just for the experience.
Trish worked as a special education instructor where she cared deeply for her students. She would even buy coats for the children who did not have one as she treated every child as if they were her own. She would bring home paintings and drawings from her students and post them on the refrigerator, which demonstrated the pride she took in her work. She was selfless throughout her life and always put others needs ahead of hers.
Trish and her soon to be soul mate “Chuck” met the love of each other’s life in 1971 at Marshall University. Chuck saw Trish at a store just off campus and told his friend she was the most beautiful girl he ever saw—this friend just happened to know someone who knew someone who knew Trish and the rest is history. They began dating shortly after, and excited to start their new lives together, the two were married in 1972, in Ashland Kentucky.
Trish is survived by husband Chuck Burdette, sons Jeffrey Burdette (Courtney), Jimmy Burdette (Maria); grandsons Corbin, Abe, and Finnegan; granddaughter Sydney; brothers, Tennis Jr. (Linda) Mullins; Jack (Diana) Mullins, and her beloved sister Janet Abbott; and wonderful nieces and nephews that she loved very much. She was predeceased by her parents Tennis and Martely Mullins.
