Jock Rodgers Wheeler - September 09, 1932 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: Jock Rodgers Wheeler was born September 9, 1932 to Francis Thompson Wheeler and Genevieve Bell Wheeler. He was raised in Hampton, Virginia, where he attended Hampton High School, before matriculating to Virginia Military Institute. After graduating VMI with academic stars in 1954, Jock attended the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, where he earned his M.D. and stayed to complete his surgical training with Dr. David Hume.
By 1960, Jock was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He traveled with a marine fighter squadron for four years as their dedicated flight surgeon – including to Guantanamo Bay for the Bay of Pigs invasion.
Following his service, Jock returned to MCV for his residency – during which, he accepted a NIH postdoctoral fellowship at Westminster Hospital in London. While there, Jock worked closely with Sir Roy Calne and Sir Peter Medawar – both who are widely recognized as early pioneers in organ transplantation and immunology.
While Jock was still in London when Sir Winston Churchill passed away, he volunteered as a first aid worker at Westminster Hall while the prime minister was lying-in-state. This opportunity was one of Jock’s fondest memories of his time in London.
In 1966, Jock settled in Norfolk, Virginia and began his surgery practice. Four years later, he established the kidney transplant program at Norfolk General Hospital and shortly after, performed the first ever kidney transplant done in Hampton Roads.
Jock also served on the faculty of Eastern Virginia Medical School as a professor of surgery starting in 1974. His passion for educating the next generation of surgeons is what led him and his long-time surgical partner, Dr. Roger Gregory, to establish the Vascular Surgery Fellowship in 1975. At the time, it was one of only twenty in the country. He served as that program’s director until 1994. This fellowship still trains up-and-coming vascular surgeons today – 49 years later.
Jock opted to leave private practice in 1994 to become the Chairman of Surgery at the EVMS. He was only in that role for 6 months before being appointed as the school’s next Dean and Provost. He served in that capacity for five years before retiring in 1999 as Professor Emeritus of Surgery.
Because of his numerous contributions to the field of vascular surgery and his exemplary career, Jock received a number of appointments and commendations – including being elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the Southern Surgical Association, and the Society for Vascular Surgery. He served as president of Virginia Vascular, the Southern Association of Vascular Surgeons, and the Medical Staff at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He also received an honorary degree from EVMS, the Caravari Service Award from the MCV, and was appointed as the chairman of the Optima Health Plan.
Jock is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Francis Thompson Wheeler, II, his sister-in-law Josiane Wheeler, and step-father Guilto Guillette. He is survived by his wife Bonnie Martinette Wheeler and five children: Catherine Williams (Dan), Berkley Wheeler (Bruce), Whitney Wheeler, Jock Wheeler, Jr. (Charlene) and Kensey Edwards (Josh). He is also survived by his fourteen favorite grandchildren: Jeff Bedford, Richard Bedford (Madison), Carter Summerville (Jurrand), Bebe Chittenden, Maxwell Chittenden, Emery Chittenden, McKinley Wheeler, Chase Orrell, Casey Wheeler, Carley Wheeler, SueAnn Wheeler, Berkley Wheeler, Lila Wheeler, and Rodgers Edwards. Jock’s favorite great grandchildren are: Liam Bedford, Connor Bedford, and Oakley Summerville.
Jock’s interests were too numerous to name. Over the course of his lifetime, he loved being on the water – whether that was teaching his children the meaning of “red, right, returning” or spending the day fishing with Nick Ferguson. He also had a large orchid collection, many that were being rehabilitated from well-intentioned friends and family. He enjoyed playing golf and was instrumental in the redesign of the Princess Anne Country Club.
A celebration of Jock’s life will be held on April 25, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Galilee Episcopal Church (3928 Pacific Avenue, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23451). A reception will follow.

Robert Joseph Howe - November 27, 1927 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: In his own words:
On April 8, 2024, Robert Joseph Howe shed his physical garment and returned to the spiritual world from which he came, for birth is not the beginning of life nor is death the end. I ask those who are now reading this obituary to spend a moment in prayer to assist me on my way.
I am now with my beautiful wife Miriam who filled my life with love and happiness for almost 60 years and who did so without ever uttering a complaint or a negative word. My seven children, Kathleen, Miriam, Teresa, Laura (deceased), Jeanmarie, Kevin and Stephen have been a great source of pride and fulfilment for me. My life has also been greatly enriched by the presence of 12 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and my faithful friends. I thank them all for their love, affection and concern for me. I have indeed been blessed with a wonderful family. To those that I may have offended I deeply apologize and ask forgiveness, especially to my family who deserved nothing but gratitude and praise.
I take leave of this world with little or no regret. I am confident that God will accept my interactions on this earth as righteous and will continue to provide me with his abounding love. I leave with the knowledge that the love I have shared with those special souls I have mentioned above will live on and transcend all time.
To anyone with an inclination to mourn for me I ask them not to, for death is not an enemy but a friend and should be celebrated not mourned. Until I am completely free from the influences of the earth, I ask my family and friends for their prayers. Pray for me and I will pray for thee.

Thomas M. Ammons III - September 12, 1943 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: Thomas M. Ammons III died on March 19, 2024. Born in Richmond, Virginia on September 12, 1943, he was the son of Thomas M. Ammons, Jr. and Margaret Warthen Jones Ammons. Tom was always proud of the fact that at the time of his birth, his father was serving as a U.S. Army Infantry Officer in the Pacific and did not return home until 1946.
Tom attended public schools in Richmond and Princess Anne County, graduating from Princess Anne High School in 1962. Tom received his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Virginia in 1966. As an undergraduate, Tom served as vice president of the student body, was a member of the Raven Society and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and lived at 4 East Lawn his final year. During college, he was also a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for two years. He received his law degree from the University in 1969.
Tom spent the summer between college and law school traveling throughout Europe. He bought a motorbike in Paris on which he traveled to 11 countries, an experience that forever changed his view of the world.
In 1969 and 1970, Tom lived in England and while there, received a Master of Laws degree from the London School of Economics at the University of London. While living in London, he traveled frequently in Europe and North Africa, always avoiding public transportation and instead hitchhiking or often simply walking from town to town.
Beginning in 1970, Tom practiced civil rights litigation in Mobile, Alabama, specializing in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination in employment. Returning to Virginia Beach in 1972, Tom began the practice of real estate law and ultimately specialized in land use and condominium law, primarily representing builders and developers. From 1982 to 1989, Tom was a member of the Virginia Beach Planning Commission, serving as secretary for one year, vice chairman for one year, and chairman for five years. In 1988 he initiated a complete rewriting of the City’s zoning ordinance, which is still in effect today, and in 1989 the Tidewater Builders Association recognized his efforts to overhaul the City’s comprehensive plan.
In 1989, Tom was appointed by the General Assembly to serve as a judge on the Virginia Beach General District Court. He remained on the court until retiring in 2005, and during his tenure served as chief judge for five years. As a judge, Tom greatly admired law-enforcement officers, and always sought to ensure that their voices were heard in the courtroom. For years he was known by the nickname “Slammin’ Ammons” for his frequent use of incarceration for repeat violators of the law, and upon retirement, he was made an honorary deputy sheriff in recognition of his support of Virginia Beach law enforcement personnel.
Tom wanted to be the last judge in Virginia to ride a horse to court. The day before he retired in June 2005, he rode his beloved quarter horse, Buddy, to the courthouse. The ride received statewide media coverage.
Tom loved animals his entire life, especially dogs and horses. He served as a board member of the Virginia Beach SPCA for over 20 years, and after retiring from the board, was made an honorary director for life. In 2016, the Norfolk SPCA created the Thomas M. Ammons Award for contributions to animal welfare, given annually to individuals who have demonstrated a dedication to the welfare of companion animals.
In 2005, Tom worked as a volunteer at the animal shelter in Gulfport, Mississippi, which had been decimated by Hurricane Katrina. Tom loved working in animal rescue and later became certified by the Humane Society in disaster animal rescue and by Virginia Tech in horse rescue.
After learning to ride in 2004, Tom began competing in horse shows. In 2008 he was the Atlantic Saddle Club’s reserve champion in barrel racing and other speed events. In 2009, he won the Butler Farms championship in team sorting. Tom took roping lessons for three years and in 2009 competed in a professional rodeo and team roping. Tom’s faithful companion Buddy died a few years ago at an estimated age of 41 years.
Tom truly loved the University of Virginia, and in 2007 endowed a scholarship for graduate students in arts and sciences. Currently, two such students receive benefits from the scholarship each year. In 2007, Tom was made a member of the Lawn Society by the president of the University in recognition of his financial support. The majority of Tom’s estate was left to the University.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, from 5 to 7 PM at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Inc., 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Tom would have been honored and deeply humbled if you would adopt a rescue animal in his memory or consider a contribution to the Virginia Beach SPCA or the Norfolk SPCA.
