Mary A. McKenna - June 27, 1956 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Guilford)
Obituary Preview: Mary A. McKenna, 67 of Westbrook died on May 2, 2024 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, with her husband, friends and family by her side, after a short and courageous battle with brain cancer.
Mary was born June 27, 1956, in Providence, R.I., to Marjorie and Robert McLellan. Following High School, she attended Albertus Magnus College where she received her associates degree. She began her career in the health care field as an X-Ray Technician. Mary quickly changed careers in the early 1980s becoming an IT professional and started working at The Travelers in the Computer Science Division. This is where she fostered strong business relationships with some who eventually became best friends, with those relationships lasting over 40 years. In 1983 she met her husband Jim McKenna who also worked at The Travelers, playing softball at Colt Park in Hartford. Two separate games, fields overlapped, she was in right field for one game and Jim was in left field for another. A simple defensive suggestion by Jim for her to move to her right sparked the relationship. She caught the ball but Jim hit the home run. On July 20, 1985, Mary married her favorite left fielder and Jim his favorite right fielder. Mary remained in the IT field for the remainder of her career in various capacities, as an employee, consultant, and eventually went on to start her own business with a focus on health care administrative processing.
Mary was active her entire life. She loved her yellow lab Jassie and was with her all of the time. She loved the outdoors, sailing with her father, gardening, walking, running, bird watching from her deck, playing tennis or just relaxing by her pool. She ran several 5K, 10K and ½ marathons with Jim over a period of 20 years. Up until last month, she walked over 6 miles daily with neighbors.
Mary loved life, had a generous heart and loved everyone that she came in contact with. Whenever she walked into a room with her wonderful smile the fun would start and that room became a lot brighter. She was always first in line to help out when needed, regardless of the situation. She had a wonderful core group of friends, both near and far who truly enjoyed each other’s company where there was mutual support among everyone in good times and in bad. Mary never needed an invitation, but somehow knew when to call someone or just show up at their door.
Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 39 years, Jim; her mother Marjorie McLellan, brother Randall McLellan and wife Amy, sisters Carole and Helen McLellan, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Robert McLellan.
Mary was strong until the final end. This is the way she lived life. She and her smile will be missed dearly by everyone who ever knew her and by everyone whose life was impacted by the deep love she bestowed on them.

Bill was born on May 30, 1938 son of Ann and Albert Holcomb. He is survived by his sons Bill (Tracey) of Maine, Chad of Connecticut, and his daughter Kathleen Rim1inger (Frank) of Colorado. Bill has five grandchildren Thomas (Bernadette), Anna (Cole) Jessa (Joe), Jamie (Najee) and Alex; and four great grandchildren, Gavin, Artemis, Athena, and Felix. A 1956 graduate of Guilford High school, Bill then attended UCONN for three years. G.H.S. class reunion events followed through the years; of which Bill was always involved. In 1960 Bill and Margaret were married in Richmond, Indiana, where Margaret was attending Earlham College. They built their home in 1968 near Bittner Park in Guilford and lived there for 50 years. A Jack-of-all Trades, Bill could fix anything; never had to call a repairman to the Holcomb household! Bill had a variety of local employment; most notably as an electrician and painter for Quonnipaug Hills condominiums and wood, Steel and Glass in Madison.
Bill's passion during his growlng up years was baseball! He began playing L.L. ball on the Guilford Green! Always an avid Red Sox fan, he would recall to anyone who would listen, how he was once a bat boy at Fenway Park and had a glove which was signed by the team, including Joe Cronin and Ted Williams! So it was to his delight in 1961 when a position opened up for coaching L.L. baseball for 10 to 12 year olds at the major league level. Thus began his "volunteer career" as a coach for 31 years, and 5 more years as an umpire. He loved this age group and was proud of all the children he coached. He hoped he became a role mode1in a positive way for each of them in the wider game of life.
Other areas of service to his community were many years as a Boy Scout leader for Troop #472 in North Guilford, a volunteer fireman, and a poll worker for local, state and presidential elections. A 50 year member of the North Guilford congregational church, Bill served as a deacon, a moderator, and was on a variety of committees. Through those years the annual country church Fair, the couples club and Bible study Groups were fun and rewarding experiences. This past decade.  Bill became a devoted member of the North Branford Congregational Church community, which he joined in March 2020. Bill's hobbies included an extensive collection of 1950's music-78's, 45's and LP'S, photography, gardening, chess, and various card games. He and Margaret traveled throughout all 50 states and to Canada and South Africa. Their favorite place to be was their cabin in "Brightwater" on the rock-bound coast of Maine which for over 60 years has been a gathering spot with family and friends. "Memories are Made of This"!

On athletic scholarship he entered Saint Peter’s University, in Jersey City, NJ, graduating in 1959 with a BS in Business Administration. Among his best memories were lettering in golf, baseball and basketball and participating in the 1958 NIT Tournament.
George and Kay met following a series of curious circumstances that led to a blind date in 1958, became engaged in 1959, and married in 1960. They were gifted with 63+ years of life to share.
George honorably served the US Navy from 1959 to 1966. He was commissioned in 1960 and received his Wings of Gold in 1961. He flew the reconnaissance F8 Crusader during the Cold War and over Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His love of airplanes and flying led him to join American Airlines in 1966. He retired in 1997 as a Captain. He led a flight crew and ground crew who worked as an efficient strong team. Some flight crews called him Captain “Donut” because of the treats he brought for each flight. The ground crew competed for George’s infamous “pushback evaluations” that he would post on his cockpit window before each takeoff!
He valued the meaning of HONOR greatly as it related to his family, his country and himself. He enjoyed family times; attending his grandchildren’s sporting events; fly fishing summers in Montana; PB&J; driving Miss Daisy, a.k.a., his wife, Kay; reading military history and political thrillers; his work with the local American Legion; vanilla milkshakes; visiting local business owners in Guilford, and moments at the marina. George (Ron) Lacko - May 03, 1942 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (Guilford)
Obituary Preview: George (Ron) Lacko peacefully passed away Saturday, March 23rd, 2024, at the age of 81. He was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia W.H. Lacko.
He was born and raised in Branford, Ct., Son of the late George Lacko Sr. and Mary Alice Hanchak Lacko. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Weitzman Lacko. Father of Patty Ferguson, and her husband, Gregg Ferguson, Step Son, Nate Kaplowitz and his wife, Kim, Step Daughter Molly Koren and her husband, Yuval Koren. Brother of Susan Moore, and his favorite Brother-in-Law, Stephen Moore. Ron was blessed with seven grandchildren-Grandsons Gregory Ferguson and his wife Jessica, John Ferguson, and Joseph Ferguson. Gabriel Koren, and his brother Isaac Koren, and Granddaughters Payton Kaplowitz and her sister, Rory Kaplowitz.
Ron's greatest joy was being a grandfather. He loved going fishing with his grandsons and his granddaughters. He taught all of them the art of catching the biggest and best fish, but unless they were big enough to eat, he taught them to throw them back into the water to live for another day. He also taught them to be patient, but if the fish weren't biting in one location, he'd take them to four or five other locations until at least one of them caught a fish. None of them were upset if they didn't catch a fish because when they were with Grandpa Ron, they always had a lot of fun, which was the real highlight of their time together. When the season of the year wasn't appropriate to go fishing, Grandpa Ron and all of the grandchildren were happy to play board games together. The biggest source of fun in playing board games with grandpa Ron was to see who could catch him trying to cheat or change the rules of the game so that he could win. Grandpa Ron was a "legend" at seeming to be playing fairly while actually playing the game according to his rules. The real winner of these games was the grandchild that figured out and exposed grandpa's attempts to get away with his cheating strategies. This was always a great source of good natured laughter and joyous triumph.
Ron loved boats, particularly sail boats. When he wasn't with members of the family, you could often find him outside working on his boat. When he was satisfied that the boat was once again seaworthy, he took great delight in returning it into the water and sailing off into the sunset. He also enjoyed being a member of the Branford Yacht Club for many years.
George graduated from Branford High School and the University of New Haven, where he earned a four year degree in Business Administration with a minor in Mechanical Engineering.
After he graduated from college, he wanted to do something for his country and he proudly joined the United States Army. After he honorably served his assigned tour of duty, he became employed by Sikorsky Aircraft, where he worked in the Quality Control Engineering Department. While he worked at Sikorsky, he created a number of new mechanical parts which helped improve aircraft construction and resulted in earning him government approval of his work and U.S. Patent status approval ratings.
George (grandpa Ron) was a good man who loved his family who will greatly miss his presence in their lives.
