William W. Smeltzer, Jr. - February 27, 1954 - March 02, 2024

Departed: 03/02/2024 (Myerstown,)
Obituary Preview: William W. Smeltzer, Jr. (Bill) of Myerstown passed into the hands of his heavenly father on Saturday, March 2, 2024 following an extensive illness. He was comforted by the love and care of his wife of nearly 50 years, Nancy J. (Reese) Smeltzer and was surrounded by family throughout his last days.
Bill was born on February 27, 1954 to the late Dorothy E. (Bensinger) and William W. Smeltzer, Sr. in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, he was preceded on the journey to heaven by his sister, Linda E. Smeltzer, and his brother-in-law, Duane C. Stout. Surviving him in addition to his wife are his children, William (Billy) and his wife Julie (McKinney) of Myerstown, Carrie and her husband Dan Boyer of Schaefferstown, his five cherished grandsons, Kody, Benjamin, Lukas, Tyce and Jackson, his mother-in-law, Ruth Reese, and his sister, Donna Stout and her family, of Morley, MI, as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
The journey of his life tells the story of a man devoted to kindness, faith, compassion and community. He would tell you the most important day of his life was the day he met the love of his life, Nancy. Together they would build a family, a business, and a devotion to the community they loved.
It was not long after they moved to Lebanon County that Bill and Nancy became involved in local service groups, and the legacy that Bill would leave behind started to form. His community involvement began in his early years through his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America, earning his Eagle Scout and Vigil Member of Order of the Arrow designations, followed by years of service as a scout leader with involvement in Troop 9 and the Camp Bashore Scout Reservation. Together with his father, he joined the Freemasons and was a member of the Mt. Lebanon Lodge No. 226 F. & A. M.
Bill’s passion for woodworking and design led him to a lifetime of work in the building trades. Starting as a cabinetry apprentice, then taking the opportunity to work with his uncle in structural steel, and ultimately deciding to follow his calling and start Woodland Contractors, Inc. in 1987. Throughout his years, he raised both of his children in the business and was blessed to work beside them daily. As they each brought different aspects of the construction passion to the company, Woodland Contractors continued to grow and flourish in its mission to bring dreams to life.
Through Bill’s involvement in the construction industry, he was presented opportunities to serve the local community. He cherished the time he was provided to serve as Lebanon County Builders Association member and Past President, South Lebanon Lions Club member and Past President, North Lebanon Township Planning Commission member for 32 years, Lebanon Community Library Board of Directors and District Board member and Past President for 21 years, Lebanon County Code Appeals Board member, Steitz Club member, Myerstown-ELCO Rotary Club member and Lebanon County Historical Society Board President. In addition to his civic volunteer work, Bill was an active member in his Friedens Lutheran Church congregation, serving as he was needed.
There was no greater joy in Bill’s life than being part of the lives of his grandsons and supporting them in their adventures. You would often see him attending sporting events, musical events, fair events and enjoying his time with them. If you were ever to walk into Bill’s office, he would proudly show you his “wall of fame” depicting a lifetime of photographs of his family. Being blessed with a family that always provided adventure and happiness to his world was the culmination of his life’s work.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to Hospice For All Seasons and Seniors Helping Seniors for the kindness and exceptional care of Bill throughout his illness.
Visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. and again on Friday, March 8, 2024 from 9:30-11:00 A.M. with funeral services beginning at 11:00 A.M. all to be held at Friedens Lutheran Church, 301 W. Washington Ave., Myerstown, PA 17067. Interment in Friedens Memorial Park. In continuation of Bill’s lifetime of service to the community, the family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made in his memory to the Lebanon County Historical Society Krall Barn Project, 924 Cumberland Street, Lebanon, PA 17042, the Lebanon Community Library, 125 N. Seventh Street, Lebanon, PA 17046, or Friedens Lutheran Church at the above stated address.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on how to write one.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and other relevant details.
