Obituary Preview: The memorial service for Marcell M. Hamilton, 86, of Kasson, MN will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday (April  29, 2002) at Evanger Lutheran Church in Sargeant,MN with Rev. Jackie Short officiating .  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Marcie passed away on Monday (April  25,  2022) of natural causes at Fairview Care Center in Dodge Center,MN.
Marcell  was born on  July 23, 1935 in Wall Lake,IA  to Roy and Ida(Sager) Hedberg.   She moved with her family as a young girl  to rural Hayfield,MN, where she grew up on the family farm attended Hayfield schools,  graduating from Hayfield H.S. in 1954. Marcell was married on July  25, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Hayfield, MN to Richrd G. Hamilton.  The couple lived on the Hamilton Family farm in rural Sargeant before moving to Babbitt,MN for a few years where Richard was employed at the Erie Taconite plant. They returned to Rock Dell Twsp where they farmed and raised their family and lived for the next 24 years. Marcie was a farmwife and homemaker and was employed at Vernon Creamery in Oslo, MN for a number of years. Richard was a longtime area farmer. They both were employed at St. Marys Hospital,  Marcie in house keeping,  until her retirement in 2015, when they moved to Kasson. Marcie was a longtime member of Evanger Lutheran Church in Sargeant.  She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, singing while driving  tractor, the occasional trip to the casino, the music of Lee Greenwood and all things Elvis. Marcie loved time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Marcie is survived by her husband – Richard ; 7 daughters and 1 son – Cindy(Terry) Thompsonof Pequot Lakes,MN; Joy(Patrick) Naylor of Waltham,MN; Peggy(Rollie) Speltz  and Penny Stevenson both of Lake City,MN; Robin Hoefs (Dennis Gerhart) of Rochester,MN Tracy(Tony) Olson of Pine Island,MN; Karri Hamilton of Taos,NM and Gregory(Judy) of Los Alamos,NM;  23 grandchildren , 41 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents,  1 sister – Patsy Mathias and 1 brother –  Robert Hedberg. Richard H. Kyllo - Unknown - April 22, 2022

Obituary Preview: Richard H Kyllo, 94, of rural Preston,MN  died on Thursday (April  21, 2022) at his home of natural causes. Richard was born in Salem Township,MN on March 15, 1928 to Justin and Lillian(Severson) Kyllo.  He grew up on the family farm in rural Byron,MN attended country school and graduated from Byron H.S. in 1945. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy serving as a jet mechanic. After his discharge, he returned to  Minnesota  and was employed at Rochester Dairy. In 1950 he was employed at Crenlo Inc. in Rochester and became factory manager. Richard was married on June 28, 1952  in Hayfield,MN to Darlene Ausrud.  The couple  lived in Rochester where Richard was employed at IBM as a manufacturing engineer and became a staff engineer.  He was also a licensed  real estate broker.  In 1967, the Kyllo family moved to Denver,Co  where Richard started Western Computer Metal Products,Inc. , manufacturing precision metal fabrications. He was President and CEO and was employing up to 70 employees when he sold the company.  In 1973 the Kyllos moved to Preston. In 1985  Richard went to work at Harmony Enterprises in Harmony,MN until his retirement in 1994. After retiring he did consulting work, solving manufacturing problems, for companies such as Westinghouse,  General Electric, Mack Truck,  General Motors and Reynolds Aluminum. He also testified on patent infringement lawsuits.   Richard was a member of  South  Zumbro Luthern Church in rural Byron, where he was baptized and confirmed as a boy. He was past president of the Preston Lions Club, a past member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers  and the Fillmore Flying Club. He enjoyed Flying his own Piper Comanche and other Club airplanes. He enjoyed spending time at home, working in the woods, machining parts and traveling with Darlene around the US and on several trips to Norway. Richard enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Richard is survived by  his loving wife of almost 70 years! – Darlene;  son – L. Robert Kyllo of Denver,IA and daughter – Julie(Jerry) Dragvold of Lanesboro,MN;  2 grandchildren – Jason Dragvold of Mankato,Mn and Janette Dragvold  of Lanesboro,MN; 1 brother – Lyle Kyllo of Winnemucca,NV and sister – Joan  Kyllo of Kasson,MN; sister-in-law – Helen Peterson of Waynesville,MO and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his  parents,  3 brothers – Sanford, Milferd and Larry Kyllo and daughter-in-law – Sharon Kyllo. In keeping withRichard’s wishes, burial and a graveside service will take place  at 1:00 P.M. on Monday ( April  25,  2022) at South Zumbro Lutheran Cemetery in Salem Township, MN with Rev. Gerald R. Higgins - May 02, 1952 - April 18, 2022

Obituary Preview: Gerald R. Higgins, 69, of Spring Valley, MN died on Monday April 18, 2022, following a long battle with kidney disease at Mayo Clinic Rochester – Methodist Campus. Jerry R. Higgins was born on May 2, 1952, in Rochester, MN to Lester and Inez (Nichols) Higgins.  He grew up on the family farm in rural Eyota, attended Dover-Eyota schools, graduating from Dover-Eyota H.S. in 1970. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy serving as an aviation mechanic on the U.S.S. Constellation until his discharge in 1976.  After returning to Minnesota, he attended Rochester Vocational-Technical School where he received an associate degree in welding.  Jerry was employed as a welder at McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing in Dodge Center, Mn for several years. Jerry was married in 2002 to Linda Rodenz of Stewartville, MN.  After their marriage they lived in Spring Valley, MN.  Linda passed away in January of 2016.  Jerry was a member of Valley Christian Church in Spring Valley and Spring Valley American Legion Post 0068 and the VFW Post 4114. He was an avid fan of Science Fiction books and movies. He enjoyed playing cribbage with his lifelong friend – Dale Struck. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, making wine, and time spent with his family. Jerry is survived by 2 sisters - Marilyn (Loren) Hoffman of Rochester and Pat Grethen of Eyota, MN; sister-in-law – Dawn Higgins of Eyota and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife – Linda, his parents, 2 brothers – L. Dale Higgins and David Higgins and brother-in-law – Norm Grethen. A time of visitation for family and friends will take place from 2 to 4:00 P.M. on Sunday May 15, 2022, at Valley Christian Church in Spring Valley.  A Celebration of Jerry’s life will follow the visitation with Rev. Ruth Mae Bassler Bohlen - November 21, 1931 - April 07, 2022

Obituary Preview: Ruth Mae Bassler Bohlen ended her earthly journey peacefully on April 7, 2022.
Ruth Mae Bassler was born 11-21-31 in Clarksburg, Maryland to Edwin and Irma Bassler. She was christened and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulton, Maryland and graduated from Clarksville High School. She was employed by the Howard County, MD Assessors Office, was a substitute school teacher, and worked for the Department of Justice FPI and the Department of the Navy in Washington DC. She had a passion for roller skating with her friends at the National Arena in Washington D.C. on Friday and Saturday nights. She volunteered (writing, reading, playing cards, assisting disabled veterans, etc.) at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Veterans Hospital in Washington, DC.
Ruth was a member of the USO in Washington DC where she danced to big bands, Guy Lombardo, Glen Miller, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, etc. It was there that she met Capt. Donald R. Bohlen of Waterville, MN on July 5th. On August 16th they became engaged. They were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulton, Maryland in 1952. They lived in Maryland until 1957 when they moved to Minnesota. They joined LeRoy Lutheran Church and later divorced.
Ruth then moved with her family to Stewartville, MN  in 1973 and joined Zion Lutheran Church. She was employed as a real estate office manager, worked at the Rochester Golf and Country Club, the 5 Railroad ticket office of the Mayo Clinic, and 14 years with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She also attended RCTC Law Enforcement courses.
Ruth held a Certificate in Mediation and in 1975 helped establish the Olmsted County Justice System Volunteer Project (JSVP). She worked as a volunteer probation officer and did pre-sentence investigations for 5 judges. She was a member of MADD and spoke at the Court Mandated Victim Impact Panel. She was co-owner of Secure Protection Agency (SPA) Guard Service, which guarded inmates from the Federal Medical Center of Rochester, MN.
She attended the 1991 Minnesota Invitational Governor’s Ball in St. Paul and was active in politics.
In 1978 Ruth was elected Olmsted County Court Commissioner and performed over 6,200 weddings, marrying 3 generations.
She cared for 10 foster children as well as her own family. She always remembered those who were kind to her.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory: son Mark E. Bohlen (Debra) of Rochester, MN, daughter Terri Bohlen Kirchner (Marc McDonald) of Iowa, Patricia Boysen of Stewartville, MN, grandchildren Shanon Loos (Steve) and Shaun Bohlen of Spring Valley, MN, Aaron Bohlen (Haylie), Sarah Bohlen, Joseph Bohlen (Kendra), and William Bohlen of Rochester, MN, Casey Chaffey (Tim) of Burlington, KY, Michelle Hurst (Isaac) of Spring Valley, MN, Dana Raadt (Paul) of Blue Springs, MO, Thomas Kirchner (Michelle) of Ceder Falls, IA, Halie Liebenow (Brandon) of Rochester, MN, Lottie Neubauer (Karl) of Cresco, IA, and Alex McDonald of Cresco, IA.
She also leaves behind great-grandchildren Kayla and Judah Chaffey, Harrison and Hudson Hurst, Andie and John Raadt, Emmett and Elias Kirchner, Natalie Bessler, Rowen Liebenow, Declyn Bohlen, Winston and Lane Neubauer, and Kaylee and Jenna Stearns.
She was greeted in heaven by: son Tracy Jay, 2 infant sons, her father and mother Edwin and Irma Bassler, brother Carl Bassler, an infant brother, grandparents Herbert and Lottie Wright, and many wonderful friends. A Memorial service for Ruth will take place at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville at 11:00 A.M. on Friday (June 3, 2022). Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville, MN. Bobbi Jean Bell - October 09, 1964 - April 05, 2022

Obituary Preview: Bobbi Jean Bell, age 57, of Rochester, MN and a longtime Stewartville, MN resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday (April 5, 2022), in the comfort of her home. She was surrounded by her devoted and loving husband, cherished children, adoring siblings, and her precious dog Stella Rose and cat Cali CoCo. Bobbi had been battling leukemia since August of 2020. Bobbi was born October 9, 1964 in Minot, ND to Don and Darlene Mueske.  She moved to Minnesota as a toddler with her family, grew up in Stewartville, attended school there, graduating from Stewartville H.S. in 1982.  She married the love of her life, Kevin Bell, on December 29th of 1995.  Bobbi grew up working at her family owned restaurant, Tarsillas, and at the Gardens Lounge, both in Stewartville.  She ended her waitressing career at the Hungry Bear to begin a new journey with Mayo Clinic where she was employed for 23 years in Quality Assurance. Bobbi loved her job and her co-workers. Bobbi and Kevin lived and raised their family in Stewartville for many years, before moving to Rochester in 2018. Kevin was a past longtime employee at McNeilus in Dodge Center and is now employed at Halcon Corp. in Stewartville.  Bobbi was a past member of Zion Lutheran Church and had currently attended the United Methodist Church both in Stewartville. She was a member of the Stewartville American Legion Post 164 Ladies Auxillary.
Bobbi had such a spice for life. She made the most out of every minute; from smelling every single candle while shopping to skipping down the hospital halls in-between appointments. She always made sure to say a polite “Hello,” and “Thank you” to anyone who passed by. She had such a strong bond with her loving sisters and brother. They did everything they could together which is so cherished. Bobbi loved spending quality time with her grandkids and children. She spent every weekend she could at their camper in Waterville; she loved spending every moment possible outside to enjoy the summer heat and sunshine. One of Bobbi’s favorite hobbies was taking care of her beautiful plants and flowers. She enjoyed the many friendships she created over her life and was often the life of the party. She enjoyed weekend margaritas with family and friends.
Bobbi’s family would like to thank Mayo Clinic’s Hospice team, the Bone Marrow Transplant team, and Dr. Grace Choong from hematology who provided loving care to her and her family.
Bobbi is survived by her husband Kevin; 2 daughters and 1 son - Cassandra (Chad) Rabe of Rochester; Justin (Morgan) Dahle of Litchfield Park, AZ and Savannah (Heath) Rud of Byron; 4 sisters - Sharon (Jim) Koch of Wabasha; Deitra (Don) Pickett of Rochester; Loretta (Larry) Mueller of Stewartville, and Dawn (Jay) Miller of Rochester, and her brother Micheal (Christy) Mueske of Rochester; grandchildren - Mckaylee, Dylan, Kourtney, Rilynn, Jayla, Kyla and River Jean and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her loving parents - Don and Darlene Mueske, Grandmother June Mueske and Uncle Gary Struck.
A memorial service for Bobbi will take place at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday (April 9, 2022) at the Stewartville United Methodist Church with Rev. Laura Nordstrom officiating. Gregory Scott Brown was born on January 11, 1951 in Olympia, WA to Garrett “Gary” and Yvonne ”Bonnie” (Dove) Brown. He moved with his family as a young boy to Stewartville, where he attended Stewartville H.S., graduating in 1970. He attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA. Greg was employed at IBM in Rochester for 11 years. He was also employed at    the Mayo Clinic. He was a past member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Stewartville. Greg was an artist who painted, drew with pencil and chalk and it was a lifelong part of his life. He was a MN Vikings fan and enjoyed time spent with his family. He also enjoyed raising horses and loved his dog Cooper.
Memorials may be made to “The Children’s Miracle Network” or “Special Olympics”.
Greg is survived by his brother Todd (Nancy) and their daughter Molly of Cape Coral, FL and nephew – Andrew Brown of Charlotte, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Carol D. Nelsen - March 07, 1940 - April 03, 2022

Obituary Preview: Carol D. Nelsen, 82, of Stewartville, MN, died at home on Sunday, April 3, 2022, of natural causes, surrounded by her family.
Carol Deanne Johnson was born on March 7, 1940 in Rockford, IL, to Earl “Fred” and Geneva (Quist) Johnson. She graduated from Rockford East H.S in 1958. She attended Luther College and Rockford Business School. Carol married Wayne Kammerer Sr. in 1961 and together they had Wayne Jr. They were later divorced. Carol was married to David Hall Nelsen on August 4, 1973. They made their home in Rockford where they welcomed daughter Jodi. Carol was a homemaker and worked in the accounting departments at Sundstrand, Clinkenbeard, and RocVale Children's Home. Later in life, she worked as a home health care provider. After a brief move to Peoria followed by a return to Rockford, Carol and David moved to Stewartville, MN, in 2013, to live near their daughter’s family.
Carol was a natural born caregiver who even as a young girl could often be found helping others. Carol was a longtime active member of Alpine Lutheran Church in Rockford where she volunteered in many activities including Altar Guild, choir and enjoyed the camaraderie of ALPS and Marriage Encounter groups. After moving to Stewartville, they joined St. Johns Lutheran Church. She could be found volunteering or participating in activities at the Center for Active Adults. She was proud of her Swedish heritage and was a member of the Swedish Historical Society, the Independent Order of Svithiod/Corona Lodge 23. Carol was an AVID Chicago Cubs fan. She loved being outdoors and hiking on her many travels with David, bowling, chocolate, and time spent with her family, especially her granddaughters – Lora and Geneva.
Carol is survived by her husband of 48 years, David; son, Wayne (Heather) Kammerer Jr., Bronx, NY; daughter Jodi (David) Dettmann, Rochester, MN, and granddaughters – Lora and Geneva Dettmann; 2 brothers, Dr. Kent (Shirley) Johnson of River Falls,WI, and John (Danita) Johnson of Rockford, IL; sister-in-law, Bernice Johnson of Rockford, IL; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews and special cousin, Judy (Mark) Lauer, Prescott, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Shirley Celebron, brothers Earl Johnson Jr., Gene Johnson, Donald Johnson and special Aunt Arlene Nelson. A memorial service for Carol will be at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stewartville, MN, with Rev. Justin Kumfer officiating. A time of visitation for family and friends will be 2 hrs. prior to the service at the church on Thursday morning. A 2nd service will take place at a later date in Rockford, IL, with burial in Arlington Park Memorial Cemetery in Rockford.  Memorials may be directed to Alpine Lutheran Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church or the Center for Active Adults at the Stewartville Civic Center. Helen R. Hotopp - August 23, 1938 - April 01, 2022

Obituary Preview: The Mass of Christian Burial for Helen R. Hotopp, 83, a longtime rural Racine Twsp., MN resident, will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2022, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Stewartville, MN with Rev. Kevin Connolly officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hotopp died on Friday, April 1, 2022, of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center where she had been a resident for the past 2 years.
Helen Ruth Lynch was born on August 23, 1938, in Rochester, MN to John and Lorna (Marker) Lynch. She grew up in rural Chatfield, MN where she attended Rice Creek rural school and Chatfield High School, graduating in 1956.  She attended Rochester Community College for secretarial instruction and was employed at American Premier Insurance and Fanny Farmer in Rochester. Helen was married on September 22, 1962 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chatfield to Dwayne Hotopp. Following their marriage the couple moved to rural Racine where they farmed, raised their family and lived for many years. Helen was a farm wife/homemaker and did daycare in her home. Helen also worked at the Stewartville Care Center for 23 years.  Dwayne was a longtime farmer and worked for 20 years at Racine Implement in Racine. Mr. Hotopp died on December 8, 1987.
Helen was a past member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chatfield and was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Stewartville. She lived on the farm until moving to the Stewartvilla Apts in 2018. She taught herself to play piano and accordion by ear and would play often for the residents at the Care Center. She gardened and canned, enjoyed baking and going out to eat, dancing and her cats. Helen loved time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and her great grandson – Jackson Kassel.
Helen is survived by 4 daughters and 2 sons  – Judy (Randy) Buckingham of  Grand Meadow, MN; David Hotopp of rural Racine, MN; Lori (Ray) Gruenhagen of Dexter, MN; Mike Hotopp of Brownsdale, MN; Susan Busswitz and Deborah Hotopp both of Stewartville; 5 grandchildren – Coy Hotopp, Natasha Buckingham, Ashley Buckingham,Winston Gruenhagen and Drew Busswitz and great grandson – Jackson; 2 sisters – Betty (Ken) Warner of Rochester and Lois (Rick) Berg of Eau Claire, WI; 2 brothers – Robert (Mary) Lynch of Stewartville and Bill (Linda) Lynch of Osceola, WI; brother-in-law – Stanley Hahn of Medford,WI and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband – Dwayne, parents John and Lorna (Marker) Lynch of Chatfield, 3 sisters – Cathy (Stanley) Hahn of Medford, WI, Carol Lynch of Rochester, and Marion Larsen (Henry) of Rapid City, SD and infant brothers – Duane and John of Chatfield; one brother-in-law – Henry Larsen, one nephew and one great-nephew. Barbara  Karen Helland  was born on December 23, 1947 in Milwaukee,WI to Gordon  and Darlene (Johnson) Helland. She moved as a young girl with her family to Austin,MN , where she attended school, graduating from Austin H.S. in 1965. Barbara was married on August  20, 1966 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church  in Austin to Jerry L. Neubauer. Following their marriage the couple moved to Minneapolis where Jerry attended Dunwoody Institute and Barb was employed at Pillsbury Company and with a private law firm. They moved to Stewartville in 1967, where they raised their family and have continued to make their home.  Barb was a homemaker and also was employed as secretary at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester and as bookkeeper for Harry and Evie Syke’s Coast to Coast Store for a number of years. Jerry was a longtime employee at IBM in Rochester. At this same time Barb returned to school, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting from Winona  State University in 1986,  the same year her daughter  Sherry graduated from the nursing program at St Catherines University.
Barb was employed with the City of Stewartville as Director of Finance for the next 32 years. She attended countless council meetings, public hearings and planning sessions, yearly audits, meeting with fellow citizens, and working with a revolving door of council members, mayors and volunteer board members. She did it all with unfailing cheerfulness and professionalism, as her many awards for excellence proved. Barb was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville and volunteered with the Stewartville Lioness Chapter for many years. She was an avid reader at home and at the cabin up north, and enjoyed sewing and taking trips with Jerry all over the US and somewhere warm in the winter.  She loved time spent with her family and especially enjoyed following  her children and grandchildren’s school and sporting activities.
Barb is  survived by her husband of  55 years – Jerry and her daughter  – Sherry (Jim) Oeltjenbruns  of  Rochester and son - Wade (Bridget) of Stewartville; 4 grand children – Anna Oeltjenbruns,  Sarah Oeltjenbruns, Chase Neubauer and Reed Neubauer and sister – Beth Wood of Rochester.  She was preceded in death by her son – Brett, her parents and 2 brothers  -  Bruce Helland and Brian Helland. Obituary Preview: Irene A. Kaul, 100, a longtime Rochester, MN resident, died on Friday (March 25, 2022) of natural causes, at River Bend Assisted Living & Memory Care in Rochester, where she had been living since October 2018.
Irene  Anna Lupkes Kaul was born on February 10, 1922 in Dike, IA to George Lupkes Sr and Jennie Barkoff Lupkes. She moved at the age of 6 with her family to rural Wheaton, MN one of 12 children. Her family farmed and she attended country school. She lived and worked on the farm with her family as a teenager, and worked cooking for some of the neighboring familys. Irene was married in Wheaton to Ilot Klomstad. Following their marriage the couple moved to Rochester and they were later divorced. Irene continued to make her home in Rochester for many years. Irene was a homemaker and also was employed at the Green Parrot Cafe in Rochester and at Lake Center Industries in Stewartville. Subsequently, she married Lester Kaul and they later divorced. Irene was a past member of St. John Lutheran Church in Wheaton, MN and Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester. She was an avid crocheter, quilter, enjoyed crafts and collecting pig figurines and reading poetry. She loved time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Irene is survived by 1 daughter and 1 son – Sharyn (Al) Harter of Stewartville, MN and Stanley (Sharon) Klomstad of Rochester;  7 grandchildren - Jean Shoemaker, Amy (John) Baumes, Stephanie Klomstad, Christopher (Marigrace) Klomstad, Paul Harter, Lucas (Stacy) Harter and Carmen (Brandon) Nielsen; 11 great grandchildren –Thomas (Danielle) Shoemaker, Josh Shoemaker, Jonathan (Dawn) Baumes, Michael Baumes, Brianna (Zach) Billings, Nevaeha Klomstad, Colton Klomstad, Kyle Klomstad, Emily Harter, Olivia Harter, Elliot Nielsen and 2 great-great grandchildren  – Dominic Prok and Savanna Shoemaker; 1 sister – Francis Borsheim of Wheaton, MN and sister-in-law, Merlita Lupkes of Wheaton, MN;  many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her son – Ronnie Gene Klomstad while serving in Vietnam, 5 sisters – Christina Hernvall, Hilka Schmidtke, Tillie Koci, Jeanette Olson and Mary Mueller and 5 brothers - Ole, George Jr., Oscar, Elmer and Fred Lupkes. Kevin Connolly officiating. Burial with military graveside honors by Stewartville American Legion Post 164 will follow at the church cemetery. Mr. Rath died Friday (March 18, 2022), surrounded by his loving family at his daughter’s home in Rochester,MN.
Robert John Rath was born September 20, 1925, to Tony & Suzanna “Susie” (Stein) Rath in Dunlap,IA. Bob grew up in Iowa and the Missouri Valley area where he worked on the family farm raising corn, soybean, and seed oats. As a United States Marine, Bob served in WWII as a Brig Warden and Color Guard. After being honorably discharged, Bob worked for Barnett Company as a Semi driver and pipe fitter for anhydrous tank throughout Iowa. Later, Bob and a younger brother, Bernard “Bernie” Rath moved to Racine MN to continue the family business of successful farming. It didn’t take long for the word to get around that the brothers could repair everything from small engines to heavy farm equipment, and another successful business for the “Rath Brothers” was started.
Bob was a lifetime member of Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church. He served on the board maintenance committee and was an usher for several years – he was very dedicated to his religion. Bob was also a life-time member of the American Legion Post 164 in Stewartville, and a  proud  36+  year member of the Root River Antique Historical Power Association.
Bob fell in love with Lillian Alice Gendreau on a blind date; they married on December 30, 1960 at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Stewartville and had two daughters, Diane, and Barbara. Bob was known for being an extremely generous, funny, and kind person, he is the definition of a loving husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, and great friend. Throughout his life, Bob has remained faithful to God, his wife, family, and friends. Words cannot express how much he will be missed

Shirley Jean Morency was born on February 9, 1936 in Sioux Falls, SD to George and Henrietta (Gould) Hetrick. She grew up in Sioux Falls, moving to Cass Lake MN after her marriage in 1953 to Ronald Anderson.  They were later divorced.  Shirley fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse in 1976 and worked until her retirement at the Beltrami Nursing Home in Bemidji.  Shirley married John (Jack) Morency on August 3, 1979 in Bemidji. Following their marriage the couple lived in Bemidji before moving to Red Wing, MN in 1991, where they continued to make their home.  Jack and Shirley enjoyed traveling in their small RV around the country.  Shirley enjoyed decorating her home for holidays and shopping.  She was artistic and enjoyed adult coloring books and embroidery.   She was an avid reader of mystery novels.  Shirley enjoyed having dogs and cats in her life.
Shirley is survived by her children Susan (Marti) Oeltjen and David Anderson; grandchildren Jeremiah Oeltjen, Jennifer Oeltjen,  and Joseph (Nikki) Oeltjen; great-grandchildren Emili Tebay, Angela Oeltjen, Patience Putzier, Payton Oeltjen, and Wyatt Oeltjen.  She is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John in 2021, a son Paul in 1991, a brother Donald Hetrick, sisters Dorothy Miller, Marjorie Davis, Lucille Bucher, Lavonne Elliot, and Gertrude Grotjohn. In 1996 Gloria and Al had moved to Hot Springs, AR, for health reasons. After Al’s death in 2013, Gloria returned to MN and made her home with her best friend and devoted sister Pat, until the time of her passing.

Philip George Denny was born on December 21, 1933 in Austin,MN to Edwin and Alberta(Bucholz) Denny. He grew up in Austin, attended school there graduating from Austin H.S. in 1951. He lived in Austin and began employment as an automobile mechanic.  Philip was married  on June  6, 1956 at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville  to Marilyn  J.  Weber.  After their marriage the couple lived in  Austin before moving to Stewartville in 1961, where they raised their children and continued to live for many years. Philip was owner/operator  of  the Oasis 66 and the Shell service stations both on Main Street in Stewartville for over 20 years. Phil was also employed as a custodian with the Stewartville School District for many years, until his retirement. Marilyn was a homemaker and also was employed at Boyums, Snyder Drug Store and the Stewartville Care Center.  Mrs. Denny died on June  9,  2004.  Phil was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville and the Stewartville Volunteer Fire Department serving 18 years in various capacities,  including  Fire Chief. He also enjoyed volunteering on the “Chain Gang” on Friday nights at SHS football games,  marking first downs along the sidelines.  He enjoyed fishing, following the MN Twins, trips to the casino with Marilyn and time spent with family.

He attended  2  years at Luther College in Decorah,IA  before serving  2 years active duty in the US Army. Following his discharge he finished  studies for his Bachleors Degree in Mathematics  at Mankato State.  He returned to the family farm where he has lived and farmed with his brother Victor, ever since. He was a longtime member of  E. St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Rock Dell. He enjoyed raising cattle on the farm, going to the sales barn,  bowling , following sports and time spent with his family.
Gary is survived by 1 sister and 1 brother  - Kathy Lee Mader of Minocqua,WI;  Victor Lee of rural Stewartville and sister-in-law – Patricia Lee of Hayfield,MN;  4 nephews -  Michael(Karen) Mader; Jonathan(Tina) Mader; Jason Lee and Bryan(Emily) Lee. Gary Lee Miller was born on May 1, 1944, in Cedar Falls, IA to Merwin and L. Harriett (Westfall) Miller. He grew up on the family farm in Iowa before moving with his family in 1956 to the Miller family farmstead in rural Stewartville. Gary attended Stewartville schools, graduating from Stewartville HS in 1962. He attended Rochester Junior College and was employed at Northwestern Bell Telephone in Rochester for a few years. Gary was married on November 14, 1964, in Rochester, MN to Betty Ann Schleusner. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Rochester and Eyota before moving to the Miller Family farm in 1974, where they raised their family and have continued to make their home. Gary was a lifelong farmer and Betty was a farmwife. In 2014, they moved into Stewartville to live with their daughter Jill.  Gary and Betty enjoyed going on trips to Georgia to visit their son John and family and all the Miller Family enjoyed going up north in the summer fishing. Gary was a sports fan and loved following his children's and grandchildren's school and sporting events.
Gary is  survived by his wife of 57 years -  Betty; 2 daughters and 2 sons – John(Nickie) of Peachtree Corners, GA; Jay(Dawn) of Rochester, MN; Jill Miller of Stewartville and Jodi(Reese) Wait of Caledonia, MN; 6 grandchildren  - Ethan Miller(Rachel Evans), Skylar Miller, Hunter Miller (Tristin Wibel), Connor(Tyshay) Miller, Fischer and Finley Wait; 2 brothers - Larry(Bettie) Miller of rural Stewartville and Roger(Marsha) Miller of Oelwein ,IA and nieces and nephews. Marvin Lester Hoffman was born on September 2, 1942 in Zumbro Falls to Lester and Ida(Berg) Hoffman. He grew up on the family farm, moving often with his family and attended Byron H.S. He began his lifelong career as a truck driver at a young age. Marvin was married on May 14, 1966, in Dodge Center, MN to Carol A. Kautz. After their marriage the couple lived in West Concord,MN where they began raising their family,  before moving to rural Stewartville in 1991 where they farmed and have lived for many years. Marvin drove semi for local over the road carriers, local area delivery companies such as Armstrong, Dahl, Leitzen Concrete, Old Dutch, and also for local construction companies such as Elcor until health issues caused his early retirement. Carol was a homemaker and was employed with Family Services in Rochester for 14 years and with the Stewartville Care Center until her retirement. Marvin and Carol raised cattle on their farmstead for a number of years and enjoyed doing outside chores together. Marvin also enjoyed fishing, target practice on the farm, watching college football, watching Mecum and Barrett-Jackson Auto Auctions with his wife and loved time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Karen M. Sokup - January 04, 1952 - February 13, 2022

Obituary Preview: Karen  M.  Sokup, 70, a  Stewartville,MN  resident, died unexpectedly on Sunday (February 13, 2022) of a cardiac arrest at her home.
Karen Marie Kiese was born on January 4, 1952 in Winona, MN  to Harold and Fern (Blum) Kiese. She grew up on the family farm in rural  Lewiston, attended school there and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1970. She later attended beautician school in Winona, and would often share fond memories of her days working at Laehn’s and decorating cakes at Randall’s. Karen was married to Robert (Bob) Paul Sokup on July 3rd, 1973 in Arcadia, Wisconsin. Shortly after getting married, the couple designed, built and lived in a house just outside of Arcadia, where they spent many years raising their family.  Karen’s favorite activity at their property each year was planning next year’s tulip garden, and she spent many days preparing and planting bulbs and talking about how beautiful the spring would be.  In 1998, the family moved to a farm where Karen’s love of animal care grew and she put all of her efforts into it.  Throughout the years, Karen was also known for her love of hunting and would show off her trophy buck as often as she could, sharing the story with anyone she met.   Bob and Karen later divorced and Karen moved to Stewartville, where she lived for many years and continually made it her home.
Karen was very proud of her years as a farmer, and always had stories to share with anyone she would meet.  After her move to Stewartville, she was employed at Sally's Beauty Supply as a beautician expert in Rochester, and as a cashier at Casey’s General Store in Stewartville.  During these years, Karen made many dear friends and shared her joy for living with everyone around her.
Karen had a passion for making beautiful things and spent her free time gardening and making flower arrangements for those she loved.  Karen enjoyed cooking and baking her mother’s recipes for her family. She loved watching the Hallmark Channel and time spent with her family.  One of her greatest joys when visiting for family picnics each summer was honking loudly as she drove through the Arches tunnel, with laughter filling the car.  She will forever be remembered as a bright soul with a heart of gold, and the most genuine smile and kindness for everyone she crossed paths with.
Karen is survived by daughters - Becky Rasmussen, Bonnie Sokup and Brenda Sokup; and grandsons - Carson and Jevin Rasmussen;  6 sisters and  3 brothers - Barb Ernster, Dave Kiese,  Ruth Olson, Diane Martinson, Jim Kiese, Joanne Zeches, Betty Agin, Sara Stephan, John Kiese and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents – Harold and Fern Kiese. A Memorial service for Karen will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at  Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville with Rev. Ally Bowman officiating. George Richard Menshik was born on July 28, 1928 in Omaha, NE to George Menshik and Erna (Meyer) Menshik.  He grew up in Omaha, attended Omaha schools, graduating from Omaha High School in 1946.  He attended the University of Nebraska (Omaha) and graduated in 1950.  He was a veteran of the Korean War (Washington DC).  He was employed as a photographer in Rochester Miracle Mile for 2 years.  From 1957-1987, he was employed by IBM in Rochester.  George married Wilma Pippert on November 13, 1965 at the Stewartville UMC.  Following their marriage, the couple moved to Stewartville, where they raised their family and continued to make their home for 46 years.  George and Wilma took an IBM transfer to Rust College in Holly Springs, MS from 1982-1984 and again from 1987-1990.   George taught in the computer department.  In 2011, they moved to south Rochester, where they lived until Wilma's passing in November, 2019.  George continued to live in the townhouse until Thanksgiving 2021.  December/January he resided at Madonna Towers doing rehab.  George and Wilma were longtime members of the Stewartville UMC and they were  members of Evangel UMC in Rochester.  George  for 10 years.  George was an avid (Master) gardener and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and also canning.  He was active in community service as a member of the Stewartville Lions Club and the Masons, and having served on the Stewartville School Board.  George lived to spend time with family, especially with his grandsons and great grandchildren.
George is survived by: 2 sons and 1 daughter--Richard (Diane) Pippert of Tiffin, IA; Greg (Linda) Pippert of Fullerton, CA and Janet (Kevin) Friederichs of St. Cloud, MN; 6 grandsons--Nathan (Stephanie) Pippert, Timothy Pippert, Jonathan (Jill) Pippert, Bryce (Katherine) Pippert,  Berent (Janice) Pippert, Brett (Kristin) Pippert; and 12 great grandchildren--Jade, Josslyn, Jensen, Aspen, Bowen, Charles, Wynn, Hannah, Grant, Ella, Lorelai, and Greyson.  He was proceeded in death by his wife--Wilma Menshik in 2019 and his parents.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be  from 9:30 to the time of the service (11:00) at the church on Saturday (4/23) (11:30) morning.  Burial and a committal service will take place at 3:30 P.M. Saturday (4/23) at Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City, IA.  The family suggests memorials to Doctors Without Borders.  Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray F. Obituary Preview: Emerson Jon Kukuzke passed peacefully in the arms of his loving parents, Jason and Amanda Kukuzke, on February 1, 2022.  Emerson Jon was born on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at 6:44 a.m. at the Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota and passed at 9:30pm the same day in Saint Mary’s NICU.  He weighed 6 pounds, 15 oz and was 20 and ¾ inches long.
During his short life, Emerson received lots of hand holding, cuddles and was told “Emerson, you are so, so loved” uncountable times.  The support and compassion from the Mayo Clinic OB team and Saint Mary’s  NICU staff was greatly appreciated as our son fought hard to stay with us.  He touched the lives of the  many caregivers who saw what a strong fighter he was and how much love surrounded him.
Emerson is deeply loved by his mommy and daddy – Jason and Amanda Kukuzke of  Stewarville, his grandparents – Alice(Doug) Stomberg of Winona,MN;  Steve(Mary Nash-Smith) Lundberg of Rochester;  Mike(Lisa) Kukuzke  of St. Michaels,MN;  Kriss(Pat) Malone of Stewartville , great-grandmothers – Charlene Kukuzke of Albert Lea,MN and Margaret Ylvisaker of Rochester and special family grandmother – Jeannette McNee of Pine Island,MN;  his aunts and uncles, his cousins and many more that were looking forward to meeting him. Emerson will remain his parents’ “Precious Baby Boy” and they will hold him again in heaven one day. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Robert “Bob” was born on August 17, 1949, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN, to Edward J. Wellik and Clara D. (Schulz) Wellik.  He attended Stewartville and Spring Valley public schools and graduated  from Spring Valley High School in 1967.  He then attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD, graduating in 1971 with honors, with a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering degree.  Bob worked in various locations including Morenci, AZ; Evansville, IN; England; Australia; Philadelphia and Palmerton, PA; and ultimately in Ashtabula, OH, for SCM Chemicals/ Millenium Chemicals/ Cristal USA.  He retired after 35 years of employment and continued to make his home in Ashtabula. As one of his colleagues said, he was a witty and wise man.  He will be dearly missed by his family.
Bob is survived by 1 sister and 2 brothers - Edward (Sharon) Wellik and  Dean (Janice) Wellik both of Stewartville and  his sister -  Carol (Lloyd “Scott”) Lynch of Rochester.  Nieces and nephews include Wendy Reinhardt, Brian (Linda) Wellik, Jodi (Mark) Rother, Jarrod (Stephanie) Wellik, Cory Lynch, and Sara (Wayne) Grieves, along with numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents. The memorial service for Robert will take place at 11:00 A.M. on  Friday (February 18, 2022) at St. Johns Lutheran Lutheran Church in Stewartville with Rev. Justin Kumfer officiating. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Pleasant Valley Twsp,MN. He was a past member of the United Methodist Church in Stewartville.   He enjoyed  visiting local historical land marks, Oxbow Park, fishing, playing his guitar, and time spent with his family.
Jeremy is survived  by his mother -  Carla Thompson of Stewartville and his father – Dennis Light(Lynn White) of Plainview, MN;  1 sister and 2 brothers  – Brianna Kerns of Eldora,IA;  Josh Light (Kathy Nicklay) of Stewartville and Matt Kernler of Rochester,MN and many cousins.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents – Glennie and Hayden Light, Carl and Pearl Heymann, his Aunt – Patricia Horsman, Uncle – Tom Heymann and step-father – Raymond Thompson. Ronald L. Olson - December 28, 1940 - January 20, 2022

Obituary Preview: Ronald L. Olson, 81, a longtime Stewartville, MN resident, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday (January 21,  2022), from complications of a lengthy illness with Parkinsons Disease, at Mayo Clinic Rochester – St. Marys Campus.
Ronald Leroy Olson was born on December 28, 1940, at home in Freeborn County, MN, to Christ and Lillian (Heaney) Olson, one of ten children.  Ron was raised on the family farm near Glenville, MN, attended country school and then graduated from Glenville High School in 1958.  Ron attended Austin Community College and Winona State College, graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics education, physics and chemistry education.  He later earned his Master of Science degree in education.  He taught 35 years at Stewartville High School as a mathematics teacher and was the school’s first computer science teacher.  He served on a variety of high school committees.  Ron was actively involved in Stewartville Education Association and served for a number of years as teachers’ right advocate and also as president of the organization. He also was active in Hiawatha Valley Teachers United, earning a number of honors from that organization. He used a sabbatical year to train at IBM to become one of the early trainers of area teachers in computer technology.   During several summers he also traveled statewide, training teachers in computer technology.  Additionally, after retiring from teaching, Ron worked at Gold Crown Limousine for a period of time and at Metafile for 5 years as a software trainer. He especially enjoyed canoeing, camping, day trips, and x-c skiing experiences with his Metafile friends.
Ron introduced students to the experience of camping and BWCA trips through Stewartville’s summer school and Zion Lutheran’s youth organization.  He had a passion for the outdoors, camping, and canoeing and thoroughly enjoyed sharing this with both children, teens, and adults.  His family made a number of trips together to the BWCA.  For many years he also enjoyed bicycling, x-c skiing, and lately snowshoeing.
Ron was community minded and was involved with the Stewartville Jaycees and later in the Stewartville Kiwanis and served a number of years as Kiwanis president and treasurer.  He volunteered with the Boy Scouts Troop 56 while his sons were active in the organization.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville and served on many committees and taught Sunday school as well as served as president of the church council.  Ron married Janet Anderson on August 10, 1963, and they lived in Stewartville.  Mrs. Olson died in 1969.  Ron married Mary Louise (Firl) Olson on May 31, 1970, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Red Wing, MN.  They made their home in Stewartville all their married lives.  Mary was a longtime educator at Rochester Community and Technical college until her retirement. Ronald and Mary enjoyed traveling to visit their children throughout the United States and in Colombia and in Germany as well as traveling to many state and national parks.   Ron had special interest in assisting with the church’s backpack program and also with volunteering at Dorothy Day Hospitality House for the homeless.   He also volunteered a number of times with Zion Lutheran’s disaster response team. Ron was an outgoing person who enjoyed giving and being around other people and who loved time spent with his family, especially his grandsons.
Ron is survived by his wife Mary; their children, David Olson of Jonesboro, GA; Lynn (Bryan) Cotton and grandsons Adam and Matthew of Poplar Grove, IL; Maureen Olson of Madison, TN; Jonathan Olson (Ivonne) of Albuquerque, NM; and Andrew Olson (Katy) and grandson Lasse of Berlin, Germany. He is survived by his sister LeAnn (James) Iseminger of Blair, NE; brothers Truman (Mary Lou) Olson of Brownsdale, MN, Elard (Florence) Olson of Glenville, MN, and many nieces and nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, sister Gloria Mueller, brothers Curtis, Robert, Gaylord, and Orren Olson and an infant sister Betty. A private family memorial service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on Thursday (January 27, 2022) with Rev. Tim Bowman officiating. Graveside services will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.  A celebration of Ron’s life will be held in the summer at Zion Lutheran Church with details available online and in the Rochester PB, Stewartville Star, and Albert Lea Tribune.  Arrangements are with Griffin Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville, MN.   Ron’s family suggests memorials be sent to Good Earth Village, Spring Valley, MN; Friends of the Boundary Waters, St. Paul, MN; or Dorothy Day House, Rochester, MN. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Wisconsin and later moved to Minneapolis where Margaret taught at several high schools and Minneapolis Community and Technical College until her retirement in 1998. Bill was in the Army and served in World War 2 and Korea.  He was self-employed and an inventor.
Margaret was a member of Chain of Lakes First Presbyterian Church in Blaine, MN until her move to Rochester in 2015 and then attended the Stewartville United Methodist Church.  She was an avid reader and she enjoyed following Auburn sports and winters in Ft. Walton Beach, FL with her good friend Janet.
Margaret is survived by nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her son David and her parents. A graveside service will take place at Ft. Snelling Veterans Cemetery in Minneapolis on Friday (January 28, 2022) where Margaret will be laid to rest next to her husband Bill.  Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray F.H. in Stewartville. Linda was employed at Mayo Clinic and worked in the Blood Donor Center for several years and was also employed at Shopko in their Pharmacy Department until her retirement  Linda was an avid gardener, and her home always had beautiful flower gardens. She enjoyed photography, especially of Bald Eagles and wildlife in the area, feeding and watching birds, cooking and was a MN Vikings fan.
Linda is survived by her husband of  33 years, James; Stepson, Joshua (Lyndsay) Busby of Plainview, MN; Two grandchildren, Hunter and Hallie Busby; Sister, Rita (Thomas) Frandal; Brothers, Harold (Bud) (Barb), Wayne (Sue) and Mike Miller; Sister-In-law, Mary Miller; and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl, and Lorraine; and brother Carl (Butch) Miller.
