Departed: 03/15/2022 (Camarillo)
Obituary Preview: Thousand Oaks, CA
Sydney Leota (Wilcox) Baughman passed away peacefully on March 15, 2022.
Sydney was born on May 12, 1935 in Seattle, WA. to Wesley R. Wilcox and Edyth Leota (Meeks) Wilcox. Sydney attended Olympic View Elementary, John Marshall Jr. High school, Roosevelt High school and her alma mater, University of Washington in which she became a rabid Husky fan. It was at that time she met a handsome guy that drove a convertible sports car.
Sydney blessed Donald R. Baughman’s life when she married him on June 29, 1957.  Early in their marriage Sydney worked for Washington Natural Gas Company in Seattle. In the 60s they welcomed their children Jeffrey and Kimberly to complete their family. Many fond memories of these younger years were the beach life with aunts, uncles, cousins and road trips to the southwest looking for Indian rugs and pottery.
Don’s career with Farmers Insurance relocated them to Tacoma, WA. Salt Lake City, UT. Portland, OR. Los Angeles, and Thousand Oaks. Upon Don’s retirement they traveled to Mexico where they fell in love with Puerto Vallarta and spent many months out of the year in this beautiful place. It was in Puerto Vallarta that Sydney searched the beach for small seashells and named the purple and gold ones “Husky” after her alma mater. Sydney had a personality that drew many friends to her and was indeed a truly beautiful woman inside and out.
Sydney is survived by her loving husband, Don; children Jeff D. Baughman (Marilyn) of Boise, ID. and Kym A. Baughman of Thousand Oaks; grandchildren Kaitlyn (Jordan) Browning of South Burlington, VT. and Will House of Olympia, WA.; sister, Sandy Viert of Puyallup, WA.; and brother, Bill Wilcox (Jennifer) of Seattle, WA.

Ann James Premack - January 05, 1929 - January 20, 2022

Departed: 01/20/2022 (Camarillo)
Obituary Preview: Ann James Premack, science writer who explored great apes and their language capability, died on Jan. 20 in Santa Barbara, California. She was 93.
With her late husband David Premack, who was a psychology professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, Premack wrote several books and dozens of articles on psychology. To understand how intelligence develops, the Premacks taught non-verbal language to chimpanzees. One of the chimps who learned how to communicate was "Sarah" who was described by The New York Times as "the world's smartest chimp".
Premack was born in 1929 in Shanghai. Her father was a Minnesota native who moved to China after World War I. He operated restaurants for Shanghai expatriates. Save for her education at a nearby convent, Premack's earliest years were lavish and cosmopolitan.
Her fortunes changed at age 14, when Japanese troops interred her family in a prison camp for two years. In the Shanghai-area camp, she, her sisters, and parents lived in a horse stable. She once cooked rancid meat in a hospital bedpan.
She and her family survived the camps. After the war, Premack's mother, a British citizen, left the family. At age 16, she was sent to the United States with her younger, learning-disabled twin sisters. She would live in the United States for the first time.
Premack met her husband while in college at the University of Minnesota. She graduated in 1951 with a degree in occupational therapy. While David would later become something of a celebrity among his fellow psychologists, Ann kept the family fed in their early years with a then-coveted job as a telephone operator.
While raising her children and pushing forward her husband's research, Premack pursued a master's in linguistics at UCSB. During the Vietnam War, she was active in the anti-war movement. She coordinated the Santa Barbara petitions for the for 18-year-olds to vote state referendum.
After David retired, they moved to Annecy, France and then returned to California, buying a small avocado ranch in Somis.
Premack never lost her verve for life. In her late 80s, she could be seen driving around Camarillo in a bright red MINI Cooper, sporting a "Bebe" shirt decorated with Swarovski crystals.
Ann Premack is survived by her three children, Ben (Pacifica, CA), Lisa (Baltimore, MD), Timothy (Issaquah, WA) and her grandchildren Sean and Zane; Daniel; and Nora and Rachel. Ann's memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 12. 2022 at the Griffin Family Funeral Chapels in Camarillo.

Charles Thomas (Tom) McAleer - February 01, 1928 - December 14, 2021

Departed: 12/14/2021 (Camarillo)
Obituary Preview: Tom McAleer, 93, of Camarillo CA, was surrounded by his devoted family as he passed away peacefully on December 14th.  He was born to Charles Torrance McAleer and Ruth (Schellenbach) McAleer in Chicago on February 1, 1928.  Until in his 80s he believed his birthdate was February 2.  (When learning otherwise, he was a bit dismayed, because he had rather liked the cachet of having a birthday on Groundhog Day).
His father was a career Army officer with various posts, so Tom and his younger sister, Nancy, spent their early years in Chicago, Washington DC, and San Antonio, Texas, before the family returned to their native Los Angeles in 1937.  They lived in Santa Monica and Glendale until the death of his father in 1942.  This necessitated a move to Hollywood; whereTom was educated at Hollywood High, L.A. City College, and Cal State University Los Angeles, graduating with a degree in Business. Fond memories were riding the Red Cars to the beach and learning to fly with the Civil Air Patrol.  During the Korean Conflict he volunteered for the draft, and was stationed for two years with the Army at Coleman Barracks in Germany.
Back home in Los Angeles he met his future wife, Doris Carlson, an Illinois transplant, at a Catholic Alumni Club dance, married at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Westwood on Sept. 17, 1960 and soon became residents of the San Fernando Valley, where they raised their four children.  They were longtime members of St. Catherine of Siena Parish; Tom was actively involved in his children’s Catholic school education and other activities. Most of his working life was as an accountant with Carnation Co. and Nestle Foods.  After 37 years in Northridge and Reseda, in 2002 they moved to Camarillo, where they enjoyed the benefits of retirement.
Tom was a man of eclectic tastes.  A fan of the VW Beetle, on many weekends he could be found in coveralls, wrench in hand, tinkering on the car with his FM radio tuned to classical music.  He was a fan of UCLA basketball; Hollywood Bowl concerts; our black lab Gretchen; politics; historical novels; war movies (“All Quiet on the Western Front”); classic silent films: geography and maps; a cigar with a gin and tonic; the LA Marathon (2 walking and 12 biking); walking; listening to audio books while exercising at the Fitness Center; independent travel with a Eurail Pass; guided land tours and river cruises; and much more.  His very favorite thing was to be on the road in their VW Eurovan camper, traveling 250,000 miles over 22 years, visiting friends and relatives and all 49 continental states - more than once.
In the last three months of a struggle with dementia, Tom received tender loving care from many in the medical and hospice communities, for which we are forever grateful.  He is survived by his wife, Doris; his children, Kevin in Berlin, Germany; Jennifer Klein in Thousand Oaks; Timothy in Camarillo; Melinda (and Mike) Saggiani in Rancho Palos Verdes; grandchildren Torrance Klein, Vincent Klein and Sienna Saggiani, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Nancy Mintie, and many friends.
Our thanks to Deacon Bob Fargo of Padre Serra Parish who officiated at a private graveside service on December 20th at Conejo Mountain Cemetery.  It included military honors and, in a nod to Tom’s Scots-Irish heritage, a bagpiper.
Tom was a very generous donor to various charities, favorites being the Archdiocese for the Military, Food for the Poor, and Operation Smile.   For those who wish to do so, a donation in his memory would be welcome.

Spreading love and kindness throughout her years she left this world knowing that she was loved and cherished by many and will long be warmly remembered.

Renina "Rene" Cinque - Unknown - October 05, 2020

Departed: 10/05/2020 (Camarillo)
Obituary Preview: Camarillo, CA
Renina “Rene” Cinque died peacefully at age 98 in her home in Southern California on Monday evening, October 5, 2020, following a long illness, which Rene handled valiantly. This tribute celebrates Rene’s life and her ongoing light in our lives.
Rene was of Italian-American descent and grew up on the East coast in a large, protective family. She witnessed many changes as she was growing up, such as the increasing use of automobiles and telephones. Rene ventured out as a young woman by moving to Washington, D.C., to work for the US War Department during World War II. Rene would return north after spending several years in Washington, D.C.; she then met her future husband, Mark (police officer, deceased), with whom she would build a loving marriage of 53 years. Their marriage produced four children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren--so far! Rene delighted in taking her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews to libraries, concerts, plays, and museums to see everything from dinosaur bones to great works of art. Thanks to Rene, a generation of cousins grew up learning how to play chess. Rene was a proponent of college for her own children and for many others in the family. She was the family organizer and a trailblazer among her generation in learning to use a computer and in teaching her siblings, two of whom have survived Rene, how to use it, as well.
From Rene’s earliest days in school, she loved her English classes and would later distinguish herself in writing, as family historian and editor. Although Rene had gone to work right after high school, she later earned her Associate’s Degree in English, i.e., after she and her family had moved to California. Rene was fascinated by the law; she became a legal secretary and then a paralegal, working in the field of labor law. She loved classical music and provided piano lessons for her children. Rene enjoyed reading and container-gardening; she savored the opportunity to travel with her late husband, including trips to Greece, Italy, Alaska, and other places. Rene’s travelogues continue to bring the images of those trips to life. Among Rene’s favorite foods were nectarines and green salad with avocado. Rene will be dearly missed by her family, friends, caregivers, and by everyone who ever knew her. She lived her life with great love, integrity, generosity, and commitment to excellence and to lifelong learning. Thank you, dear Rene; we will miss you and your sweet, unforgettable smile! Your spirit continues to bless us.
