Andrienne Sandra Jefferson - March 08, 1942 - December 18, 2023

Departed: 12/18/2023 (Atlantic City)
Obituary Preview: AndrienneSandraJefferson, 81, of Atlantic City, New Jersey transitioned from this life on December 18, 2023. "Sissy" as she was affectionately known was the second child born to Bessie Townsend Jefferson. She was born in Atlantic City on March 8, 1942.
As a child, she was very adventurous exploring her neighborhood where she created lifelong memories and friends. She was educated in New Jersey Avenue School and later graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1960. Also, as a child she found her way to the Lord at Bethel Baptist Church and Hamilton Memorial United Methodist Church. She and her sister, Shelle, were very active at Hamilton.
While in high school she began working at Atlantic City's famed kosher hotel, the Breaker's Hotel located on the Boardwalk at New Jersey Avenue, as a switchboard operator, and where her brother, Eddie, was a bellman. Together they found ways to increase their income while working at the hotel. After Eddie left to serve in the United States Air Force, Sissy remained at the Breaker's Hotel until it closed. However, after she finished high school, she took over a job that her sister, Shelle, had. Sissy became a babysitter for her new Arctic Avenue neighbors, Carolyn and Joseph Greenidge, who moved in across the street from her family home. What began as a part-time job just to pick up a few extra dollars to buy records became a new family. Sissy became more than a babysitter for Joseph and Charles Greenidge, she also took care of their cousins, Traci Franklin, Donya and Bryan Monroe, Jeffrey Pope and Joseph McNeil when they came to visit as well. Because of all the love Sissy had to share, these children became hers for life.
After the Breakers closed Sissy found employment with the Atlantic City Board of Education as a truant officer at her alma mater, New Jersey Avenue School. After a few years as truant officer, Miss Jefferson became a teacher's aide and also began pursuing an Associate's Degree from the then new Atlantic Cape Community College. She later went on to obtain her Bachelor's Degree from Glassboro State College so that she could have the career that she was meant to have – as an educator with the Atlantic City Board of Education. Miss Jefferson became a sixth and seventh grade teacher at Indiana Avenue School. She was the consummate educator. She was a loving, but stern teacher. In her classroom her students learned more than reading, writing and arithmetic. She taught them how to survive and thrive in the world. Her efforts paid off. She was named "Teacher of the Year." But more of a testament to her teaching abilities, her former students would often come to her years later expressing their gratitude, admiration, and love for the lessons she taught them. Though she did not always remember their names, they remembered her fondly.
Sissy was a woman of strong faith and had a great commitment to God. After many years as a member of Hamilton Memorial United Methodist Church, she joined Greater Exodus Baptist Church under the pastoral direction of Reverend Sherman R. Mosley. Greater Exodus later became Saint Peter and Paul American Catholic Church and she continued to worship with and support Bishop Mosley's ministries for more than thirty years. In recent years she renewed her membership at Hamilton.
For relaxation, she enjoyed playing many card and board games – especially, Pinochle, Bingo and Monopoly. She also enjoyed fishing on the Boardwalk in the Inlet. She always loved spending time with her friends and family.
Though Sissy knew many people, she would be quick to tell you, "I have many associates and few friends." And those friends were friends for life. They include Billie Ross Jones, Marcy Portner, Rita May Forbey, "Mom" Jean Smith. Her dear neighbors and special friends, Don Guardian and Lou Fatato. Sissy believed that friends should last a lifetime, just as these have been to her.
AndrienneSandraJefferson (she said her mother gave her one name, not three, so she wrote it as one name) is survived by: siblings, Edward R. Batten, Sr., and his wife Ethel, and Constance Robinson; nieces, Shanna Batten Aguirre and Hanifah Walidah; nephews, Edward R. Batten, Jr. and Jon Christopher Green; her adopted family, Carolyn W. Greenidge, Joseph F. Greenidge, Jr., Charles Q. Greenidge, Traci Franklin Leno, Donya Marie Monroe, Jeffrey B. Pope and Joseph W. McNeil, Jr.
Her loving spirit, giving heart, truthful nature and guiding hand will all be greatly missed by many.
A celebration of her life will be 11AM, Friday, December 29, 2023, Hamilton Memorial United Methodist Church, 609 Arctic Avenue, Atlantic City, New Jersey, where friends may call from 10AM. Interment to follow in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville, New Jersey. Arrangements entrusted to Greenidge Funeral Homes, Inc. Atlantic City, New Jersey where condolences and photographic memories may be shared at www.greenidgefuneralhomes.com
