Ben Mark Cherrington Jr. - April 13, 1933 - February 02, 2021

Departed: 02/02/2021 (Hot Sulphur Springs)
Obituary Preview: Ben Mark Cherrington Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 2, 2021 at the age of 88 on the family ranch near Grand Lake, Colorado, with his beloved wife Sara, (Toots), of 65 years at his side.
Mark was born on April 13th, 1933 in Denver, Colorado. His adoptive parents were Dr. Ben and Edith Cherrington.  Mark attended Colorado Military School as a young man where he earned honors as an accomplished equestrian show jumper, winning many events at the National Western Stock Show.  Mark attended Denver East High School and upon graduation enrolled at Colorado A&M, (Colorado State University), in Fort Collins, Colorado.
During summer months, while in school, Mark worked for “Aunt Lou” at the Grand Lake Boat Service giving tours of Grand Lake to out of town visitors from one of his favorite Chris-Craft boats.  While in Grand Lake during the summer he met Sara Ann Fisher, “Toots”, the daughter of local ranchers Red and Helen Fisher. The two were married on July 28, 1956 on the 7V/ Ranch. The couple returned to school enrolling at Colorado Teachers College, (University of Northern Colorado), in Greeley, Colorado where Mark completed his education earning a teaching degree.
Upon college graduation Mark began his teaching career in Delta, Colorado followed by a year in Springfield, Colorado and then 15 years of teaching American History for the Aurora Public Schools at Aurora Central and Hinkley High Schools.
Mark and Toots had their first child, Cal, born in June of 1957, followed by a daughter Christy in November of 1958 and then Ben in December of 1959.
Mark loved to spend time with his family on his boat water skiing on Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain or Lake Granby and the annual trip to Lake Powell just before it was time to start cutting hay.  Late summer and fall were spent in the hayfield up until the age of 86, when loss of eye sight made it too difficult to run the swather or baler as he had done since 1972.  During the winter Mark loved to feed the livestock from his snowcat….making the trip everyday no matter the temperature or the weather.  Spring brought calving season and the many trips, day and night, out to the meadow to check on the “girls”, as Toots would call them.  And on several occasions over the course of 40 years a new born calf would end up in the ranch house bathtub, immersed in warm water in an effort to save it’s life.
Mark was proceeded in death by his parents Dr. Ben Cherrington, Edith Harper Cherrington, sister Ann Stevens and son Ben Mark Cherrington III.
Mark is survived by his wife Sara Fisher Cherrington, children Cal and Christy, grandchildren, Ben, Erin and Bryan and 4 great grandchildren, Caden, Addelyn, Madison, and Ryann.

Robert Duane Scholl - May 08, 1935 - January 28, 2021

Departed: 01/28/2021 (Hot Sulphur Springs)
Obituary Preview: Robert Duane Scholl passed away on January 28, 2021 at age of 85 on his cattle ranch outside of Parshall, Colorado with his beloved wife of 65 years Pat by his side. Duane fought a long and courageous battle against both cancer and Alzheimer’s, and despite this he stayed active on his beloved ranch within a few months of his passing. He was an inspiration to all that knew him.
He was born May 8, 1935 on his family’s ranch up the Williams Fork to Robert Henry Scholl (Bob) and Ellen Nadine (Marsh) Scholl (Peg). Duane first attended grade school on the Williams Fork until age 6, riding his horse the few miles to and from. His folks then purchased the current Scholl Ranch from his uncle Gerald McCall around 1941, and the family moved into an old homesteader cabin up there for a year before his father Bob moved Peg, Duane and young brother Kayo down into a 4 room cabin that had no indoor plumbing (which is how they lived until he moved away to attend college, and Bob could build a new house).
Duane and his brother Kayo attended a small school on the Scholl Ranch, then subsequently attended a school on Corral Creek that was taught by his aunt Martha Weimer. He eventually attended grade school in Parshall. He finished up his schooling in Kremmling starting in 8th grade through high school graduation in 1953. He was valedictorian of his class that year while his future wife Pat was salutatorian of the same class. Duane married his college sweetheart Patricia “Pat” Van Pelt in 1955, they first got to know each other in junior high track and later when they attended Bible Camp on the Williams Fork. Although there was a mutual admiration all through high school, Duane didn’t muster the courage to ask Pat out until College, he often explained, he didn’t think she would say yes!
Duane attended CU for 1 year on a football scholarship, he then transferred to Colorado State College (“the Aggies”) and received his undergraduate degree in Math and Science. Duane and Pat were married on August 28, 1955 and both graduated in 1957. The young newlyweds both had to work 2 jobs while attending college and worked on the Scholl Ranch during the summers. During college, Duane somehow found the time to be on the CSC wrestling team. After graduation, Duane taught high school math and science in Hillsdale WY until they moved back to teach at West Grand High School and to be closer to the Scholl family ranch. He even taught a couple of years at Middle Park High School, he then took a year off from teaching and went back to school himself to get his master’s degree in Mathematics from Oregon State University.
Duane and Pat had their first child Cheri in 1959 and then moved back to the Scholl ranch living in a small trailer until Duane could accumulate enough money from teaching and building houses during the summers, to start building his own home for his growing family. Thad Scholl followed in 1960, Kyle 1962, Shawn 1964, all subsequently resulting in 14 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
Duane taught high school math, science and computer science at West Grand High School while also coaching basketball and football for a spell. Duane was West Grand High School’s longtime head wrestling coach, until he retired from teaching in 1982. Duane inspired countless students to stay in school and further their educations.
In 1982 Duane retired from teaching and became an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance. While at Farm Bureau, Duane won numerous awards including New Agent of the Year, Agent of the Year, and commercial, farm and ranch, and health agent of the year as well. In 1995 Duane left Farm Bureau and along with Becky Beason became partners in a company owned by his son Thad and formed Town and Country Insurance where he continued to provide insurance services until he retired in 2009.
Duane loved ranching but would often joke he needed at least two other jobs to support his ranching life! Duane had boundless energy and was a selfless giver of his time to his family, friends, students, church, and community. He was at one time President of Middle Park Woolgrowers Association, Chairman of the Colorado Woolgrowers Association, long term Member of the Middle Park Stockgrowers Association, Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, National Cattlemen’s Association. Duane was active in the Republican Party and one time ran for County Commissioner he was also a member of Judicial Performance Commission. He was on the Grand County Planning Commission, Middle Park Water Conservation District. Duane was also a founding member (along with Joe Gerrans, Grady Culbreth, etc.) of the Habitat Partnership Committee who bravely organized the Ranchers, BLM and DOW in an integrated mission to address the elk caused hay crop damage in Grand County. Duane was a longtime member and deacon at the Parshall Chapel and taught bible study classes.
Duane loved his family and had a dry, conservative, predictable sense of western humor, he could philosophize with the best of them! His word and handshake were unbreakable. Duane always made you feel welcome and he always took the time to talk to whomever sought his advice.  Duane loved to make ice cream for his children and grandchildren, but everyone suspected he loved to eat it most of all! He also loved to hunt, fish and sled with his children and grandchildren, and he was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Duane is survived by his wife Pat, his four children and all his grandchildren, great grandchildren and his brother Kayo and his family.

Lyle & Marylin Hileman - Unknown - October 21, 2020

Departed: 10/21/2020 (Hot Sulphur Springs)
Obituary Preview: Lyle Wayne and Marylin Mildred Novakovich Hileman passed away together on the evening of October 21, 2020, at peace and in each other’s arms at the height of the East Troublesome wildfire.
Lyle was born in Denver, Colorado on March 18, 1934, the fifth child of Glenn L. and Lillian R. Gustin Hileman.  He grew up in Lakewood, Colorado near 6th Ave., which at the time was a dirt road.  His influence in the community began at an early age when a pneumatic vehicle counter was laid across the road; he added hundreds of hits with his father’s hammer, thus helping to establish West 6th Avenue as a major Denver thoroughfare.
Marylin was born on June 9, 1936 in Murray, Utah.  Her family later moved to Wheat Ridge, Colorado.  She was the second of five children born to Stephen and Amy Cleo Jenkins Novakovich.  She had an adventurous, fun-loving, and independent spirit.
Lyle and Marylin met while attending Wheat Ridge High School.  Their first date was at the Elitch Gardens amusement park.  Lyle knew from the start that she was the one for him, and his persistence in courting her is part of the family legend.  Marylin took some convincing, but not for too long.  They were married in Georgetown, Colorado when he was eighteen and she was sixteen years old.  From that point on they never looked back, only forward.  It was the beginning of their 68-year love story. Lyle was a building and concrete contractor, and a career Denver firefighter.  He LOVED to work and demanded excellence of himself and others.  He detested “burning daylight” and insisted on an early start to each day.  Said one subcontractor, “a lot of wives in Granby will be glad when this building is finished…Hileman calls at four in the morning and wakes up the whole family!”  He brought out the best in others.  As soon as her five children were all in school, Marylin got her GED and then attended Metro State College in Denver; she graduated summa cum laude.  She went on to become a mental health worker at Fort Logan Mental Health Center for 26 years.  She dearly loved the patients there, and often took them out shopping on her days off.  Marylin was the consummate homemaker.  Her greatest joy was giving love and extending hospitality to friends and family.  And there were lots and lots of friends and family.  Marylin’s meals and candy counter were legendary, and she was a prolific hiker!
Lyle and Marylin’s home in Grand Lake was the “go-to” spot for family and friends for over thirty years.  Their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren visited as often as possible.  Lyle and Marylin’s love and kindness was a magnet that drew people in.   Each visit touched their hearts, and each visitor left a piece of their own heart behind.  Grand Lake was and will remain a special family gathering place.
Lyle and Marylin were faithful, dedicated members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Lyle was instrumental in the construction of their beloved Granby congregation’s church building.  They dedicated their lives to church activity and service, each serving in many church positions over the years.  They especially enjoyed their weekly church work in the L.D.S. Denver Temple.
The wildfire that took their lives left nothing behind but treasured memories and a heritage of Christ-like love and service.  That, in the end, was their greatest gift to all who knew them.
Lyle and Marylin were predeceased by Lyle’s siblings Jack, Glenrose Hileman Heckel, Dick, and Dale; also by Marylin’s sibling Annetta Novakovich Mortensen.   They are survived by Marylin’s brothers Steve (Roma) and Mike (Linda) Novakovich, and her sister Amy (Jack) Holler; their children Lyle S (Brenda) Hileman, Cherie (Joseph Kim) Wilsted, Kim Higgins, Glenn (Michelle) Hileman, and Wayne (Terri) Hileman; also 25 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.  Each of them were Lyle and Marylin’s pride and joy.
A virtual memorial service is being planned for November 21, 2020 at 11:00am by Grand County Mortuary, Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado. The family suggests that charitable donations in Lyle and Marylin’s memory can be made to the GoFundMe page that has been set up to assist the seven Grand Lake first responders who lost their homes to the East Troublesome fire while they were serving to save others’ homes and lives.  The link for this website is https://www.gofundme.com/f/firefighter-who-lost-their-home

Eric Henry Pietz - June 17, 1948 - September 19, 2020

Departed: 09/19/2020 (Hot Sulphur Springs)
Obituary Preview: Eric Pietz blazed across the west chasing his dreams.  He lived at least nine lives, dodging mayhem in his quest for the next challenge. His irreverent humor and tendency to exaggerate were legendary. He was the party and the fun.  His enviable energy propelled him through a lifetime of adventure and a valiant three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He passed away at home on September 19, 2020 with his family and beloved dog Greta at his side.
Eric was born June 17, 1948 in Long Beach, California to Lt. Col. Reuel Henry Pietz and Mary A. J. (Dierks) Pietz. He spent his early years moving between Marine Air Bases on the east and west coasts with his parents and sister Pam. In 1965 the family settled in Minnesota and Eric graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN with a degree in geography and geology before heading to the Rocky Mountains. He started in Montana as a ski camp photographer and in 1970 he migrated to Tabernash, CO where he bought the tiny post office and general store and painted the iconic Tabernash sign in Rolling Stone font. He was a veteran ski patroller and fishing guide, always eager to analyze your turn or suggest a fly. He was a founder of Team Funhog and his super-sized personality lured skiers to Winter Park as he promoted the mountain at ski shows across the U.S. and abroad. That prepared him for the trade show circuit where he peddled diamond-bladed Warthog knife sharpeners to hunters and fisherman who shared his love of the outdoors. His recent years were spent stalking trout, designing river restorations to create trout habitat, and swapping lies with fishing clients from Utah’s Flaming Gorge to the Three Forks Ranch on the Wyoming border.  He was a colorful and unforgettable guide.  Everyone wanted to go with Eric.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Kathy, their dog Greta, and his sister Pam Pietz of St. Cloud, MN.
The family thanks hospice for their compassionate support.
Please consider Trout Unlimited if you wish to contribute in Eric’s name. His life will be celebrated when the virus is contained. Summer 2021, we hope. Tip one to him now at a virtual campfire. He’ll be the brightest star in the sky.

Obituary Preview: Sean Abraham Massoud of Grand Lake, Colorado, and Sauquoit, NY passed away on September 13, 2020 at the age of 29. Sean was born on February 14, 1991 to Michael and Barbara Piper Massoud. Sean graduated from Sauquoit Valley High School in 2009. After high School he began his career as an electrician, working for a local contractor. Although he found success in these sporting pursuits, he relished the experiences most of all. Sean also enjoyed many summer weekends in the outdoors camping and dirt biking with the Grand Lake Crew, whom he considered family. Sean will be best remembered for his infectious smile and fierce devotion to his family and friends. Sean is survived by his parents Barbara and Michael of Sauquoit, NY., paternal grandmother Joan Barber Massoud of Utica, NY. His older brother Daniel Massoud of South Dakota and sister Jessica Massoud Heinrich and Tyler Heinrich of New Hampshire, their son and Sean’s nephew Mason Heinrich, as well as many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Travis Lea Minear - June 19, 1976 - August 20, 2020

Departed: 08/20/2020 (Hot Sulphur Springs)
Obituary Preview: The rising underdog stories are the most rewarding to listen to. This underdog single handedly built an interior trim company that has prospered into one well known for its absolute perfection. Travis Minear was also known as being the fearless son, father, uncle, brother, cousin, and friend riding anything with a motor and throttle. His main hobby was fishing and had to give the fish a kiss before sending them on their way back into the water. Travis used camping as one of his favorite ways to spend quality time with his family. He left behind a life partner and daughter whom are both beautiful and strong ladies. He also left a son who will no doubt grow into a man Travis would have been beyond proud of. All of the other family and friends he left will forever remember he had a heart of gold willing to go above and beyond for them. The community and world lost one of the good ones to soon again. May peace be with Travis as his light shines down upon us guiding us along our journey to once again be together.

Steven Douglas Sears - April 11, 1955 - August 19, 2020

Departed: 08/19/2020 (Hot Sulphur Springs)
Obituary Preview: Steven Douglas Sears was born April 11, 1955 in Greeley, Colorado to Roger Douglas Sears and Diane Allee Sears.  The oldest of Doug and Diane’s three children, Steve grew up exploring Colorado with his family. His dad was a geologist and often took the family on trips throughout Colorado’s diverse geography; this was where he was first instilled with the appreciation for natural wonders he cultivated through the rest of his life.
He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1977 with a degree in business, and later furthered his education with an MBA at CU. He married Jane Farrell in 1979 (and once again in 2005 for good measure) and together they raised two boys, Walker (b. 1981) and Noah (b. 1983).
Steve applied both his formal education and knowledge gleaned from his father’s family business in Greeley, Sears & Co. Real Estate, to his career in real estate. He took the reins of the family business with the untimely passing of his father in 1983. With the sale of Sears & Co. in 1988,  Steve and his family moved to Colorado Springs for an opportunity to manage commercial real estate developments. They later moved again, this time to to Dallas, TX. They remained in Dallas until 2001, when both boys had returned to Colorado to attend college.
The highlight of Steve’s career was working in Tokyo, Japan from 2001-2012, overseeing real estate investments in Asia for GoldmanSachs. He cherished his years in Japan, where he developed a deep connection with the Japanese people, their culture, and the land itself. Annual family visits by his then grown children and other family and friends were lifetime experiences for all.
Steve was an avid golfer, traveling the world playing golf with a wide circle of friends who appreciated his mischievous sense of humor and his deep love of humanity.  It was both the camaraderie developed with his friends and fellow golfers, and the awe of experiencing the sport in some of the farthest reaches of the globe that drove his passion for the game. He was a member of the Outpost Club, a golf society that burnished his love for course design and architecture.  Steve served most recently on the scholarship committee of the Outpost Foundation, where in the last five years well over $100,000 has been awarded in scholarships and grants to young women and men who shared Steve’s appreciation for golf.
Part-time Grand County residents since 2004, upon his retirement in 2012 Steve and Jane moved to Tabernash full time where he became actively involved in the community. He became a member of the Board of Directors at Grand Mountain Bank,  the Board of Directors at Colorado Headwaters Land Trust, and on the nine-member Advisory Committee of the Open Lands, River and Trails Fund in Grand County. Steve was also a Founding Director of the Board for National Links Trust, a non-profit set up to preserve and promote affordable and accessible municipal golf in the United States.  He was crucial in securing the management partner for NLT’s first project, the renovation of three historic golf courses owned by the National Parks Service in Washington, DC.
Steve is survived by his wife, Jane Farrell, sons Walker Sears (wife Lindsay) and Noah Sears (wife Sparky Moir), grandchildren Reilly and Keller Sears, and two “grandpups.”  Steve loved spending time with his family, and the whole gang was often gathered at the beautiful family home in Tabernash. Steve is also survived by his sister Jennifer Sears, brother Curtis Sears (wife Marcia), uncle Larry Sears, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family service is planned later this year. Memorial gifts may be sent to: Outpost Foundation ℅ Chris Hunt, Treasurer 24500 Center Ridge Road Suite 170 Westlake OH  44145-5653 http://outpostfoundation.org/make-a-donation or Colorado Headwaters Land Trust PO Box 1938 Granby, CO 80446 coloradoheadwaterslandtrust.org

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, achievements, and funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have personal knowledge of the deceased and be able to provide accurate and meaningful information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements to enhance the tribute to the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Check with the specific publication or platform for their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some may require email submissions, while others may have online forms or work directly with funeral homes.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer free or paid options with varying levels of features.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including anecdotes, quotes, or humorous stories can make the tribute more engaging and memorable.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

Can I republish an obituary from one source to another?

Possibly, but be sure to obtain permission from the original publisher or copyright holder before republishing. Some sources may have restrictions on republication.

What is an online obituary guestbook?

An online guestbook allows friends and family to leave condolences, share memories, and sign their name in tribute to the deceased. These messages are often preserved as part of the online obituary.

How long are online obituaries archived?

The archiving period varies depending on the platform. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be removed after a certain period of time.

Can I create a memorial website or social media page instead of an obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death and providing biographical information. A eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

Can I use an obituary as inspiration for other types of writing?
