Richard Clare Green - February 19, 1941 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Port Huron)
Obituary Preview: Richard Clare Green (born February 19, 1941) grew up in a place he considered the idyllic small town, Gallipolis, Ohio, on the banks of the Ohio River, playing with frogs and snakes in the river, riding his bike around town, delivering newspapers, and practicing his trumpet. He was one of five children of William and Marjorie Green—Ron (deceased), Clare (Richard), Fred (deceased), Norma (deceased), and John. His father was a strict Baptist Minister who forbade dancing, playing cards, parties, smoking, drinking and kissing. All the kids were rebellious, evidenced by the fact that every single one of them excelled at pool, having haunted local pool halls throughout their youth, becoming shark enough to make a little money here and there by controlling tables. To understand Richard, you need to know that he was a rebel as early as five, as he and his older brother played around with cigarettes. He loved his teachers, especially his math and band teachers. Richard had nothing but fond memories of growing up in Gallipolis. When he was beginning his senior year of high school, his family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, a move that he resented very much; but he made the most of it, imparting to all concerned that from then forward he was to be called Richard (instead of Clare), joining the marching band at Port Huron High, and graduating in 1959. While in Port Huron, Richard fell in love with the Blue Water Bridge and St Clair River and became quite the ship-nerd.After high school he entered the Air Force and was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he exhaustively explored museums and galleries every chance he got. His job in the Air Force was as weatherman, and his one claim to fame was guiding the famous Col. William Draper to deftly land President Dwight Eisenhower’s plane in inclement weather with the president in it.After the Air Force, Richard attended Port Huron Junior College (now known as St. Clair Community College). Besides an associate degree he also earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan, Flint, where he graduated with a degree in English. He played trumpet in the International Symphony for awhile. His first post-college jobs were with Pan American Airlines and then Xerox. Eventually he became a branch manager of Ypsilanti Savings bank. In 1970 he married Bunny (Bernadette) Foisie, and adopted her two kids from a previous marriage, Annette, five years old, and Eric, three. They were the light of his life.On October 9, 1974, three armed men forced their way into the Green-family home and bound and gagged all of them. In the early morning of October 11, Richard was forced to go to the bank and procure $50,000 in exchange for the safe return of his wife and children. Annette was nine and Eric was seven. One can probably imagine the effect of such trauma on them, individually and as a family. In 1980, Richard and Bunny separated, and they were divorced in 1981.Richard was no longer interested in working in banking. He began employment at the University of Michigan, where he quickly rose to manager in Personnel before being catapulted to Assistant Director at the Transportation Research Institute (part of the University).Richard had developed a problem with alcohol. In 1981 he sought help at the Washtenaw Council on Alcoholism, where he learned that he needed to attend meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous. That’s where he met Judith Noel Price. Soon after meeting they were constant companions. They married on December 24, 1986.Richard felt overwhelmed and underprepared in his role at the Institute and left after only about a year. But leaving the institute meant leaving the University, which also meant he was unemployed at a time when there were few jobs in Ann Arbor that fit his experience and skills. Richard and Judith thought it was time to start a new adventure. They moved to Seattle, Washington in August 1987. The hard part was being away from Annette and Eric. Every summer they drove back across the country to spend a week or so with the kids—and the grandkids as they came along, Emma on January 21, 1996 and Gabrielle on April 29, 1998.Seattle was a wonderful experience for both of them. Richard supported Judith in completing her education, which was a fundamental dream of hers. He worked at various jobs until he found his niche as General Manager of Sound Oil. They loved exploring the Pacific Northwest and their time there. But Seattle was too far from family for both of them. When he came down with Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 65, it was time to go home. They returned to Michigan, specifically Fort Gratiot, Michigan in December of 2005. They were immediately embraced by the fellowship of AA in their new home in Michigan.Richard was usually the most intelligent person in any room he was in. His grandkids loved that he was a “human encyclopedia.” And he loved life, he loved his family and friends, and he loved helping other people. His contributions to his family and friends in AA can be summed up by his personal values of “stay small”, “do your best, turn over the rest” and “just do it”. Richard will be sorely missed and always remembered.Richard is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren and their spouses (Emma's husband, Grant Hekhuis and Gabrielle's husband, Jacob Ureste); his sister-in-law Elma Green (Fred); his brother and sister-in-law John and Wanda Green; his niece and her husband, Beth and Erik Barden; his nephew and his wife, Scott and Jennifer Green; his nephew and his wife, Christopher and Peggy Spencer; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Christopher and Christa Price; brother-in-law Mark Price; sisters-in-law Amy Austin and Kathleen Lenk; niece and spouse Maya Price and Carlos Williams; niece Kayla Price; nephew and spouse Jason and Kate Lenk; grand-niece Lauren Lenk; grand-nephew Tyler Lenk; and all his AA sponsees.A memorial will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at The Pine Grove Park Pavilion, 800 Prospect Place, Port Huron, MI 48060. A luncheon will follow at the Dry Dock, 412 Huron Ave, Port Huron, MI 48060.Memorials are suggested to the family.Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Grace Memorial-Smith Chapel. Obituary Preview: On April 13, 2024, Robert (Bob) Evans, beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother, son, educator, and coach, passed away after a short, bravely fought battle with cancer.Robert was born on January 18, 1952, in Calgary, Canada, to John and Dorothea Evans. He was married for 33 years to his love and best friend, Jennifer (Bates) Evans. He is survived by his wife Jenny, son Thomas (Michigan), daughter Lexi (Wisconsin), and daughter Ann (Chris and grandson Matthew) Locker of Sidney, B.C., Canada. He is also survived by his brothers Malcolm (Cindy), Dan (Shelly), Tim (Machin) Evans, and sister Sheila (Mark) Taylor, brothers-in-laws Brad (Michele) Bates and Joel (Maribel) Bates, sister-in-law Suzanne Bates, along with an army of nieces and nephews. His father, John, sister, Heather, father, and mother-in-law, Jim and Barb Bates, and brother-in-law, Brian Bates, preceded him in death.Robert graduated from Claremont High School in Canada and earned his bachelor’s and master's degrees in Education, concentrating in Spanish/Social Studies. He taught himself Spanish and spoke it so well that he was often confused with native Spanish speakers, and he tested out of several years of Spanish classes in college. He did missionary work in Central and South America, where he mastered the language. He spent most of his educational career as a consultant helping teachers support students in their classrooms with acquiring the English Language. When he met Jennifer, he was teaching all of the K-5 students in the school who could not speak English (in all languages) in one classroom! They lived in Las Vegas together for 25 years before moving to Michigan in 2011. He always said he was “anti-social,” but you would never know that to talk with him. Really, it was that he would just rather spend time with his family.Robert’s unconditional love and support of his family have had a profound and lifelong impact on them. His son grew up to become his best friend, and prior to that, he appreciated spending time with his siblings, in-laws, dogs, and children. He participated in and was entertained by most sports, old movies, playing games, and was an absolute trivia master! He was an excellent runner and was still running three miles a day until he got sick. He thoroughly loved coaching Thomas’ hockey teams when he was young and then traveling around the country, oftentimes with his father-in-law, to watch him play as he got older, and then eventually when Thomas started coaching. He enjoyed the many wonderful trips his family took together for hockey trips and Lexi’s gymnastics meets, the vacations they enjoyed like houseboat trips to Lake Powel, the cabin at Horn Lake, National Parks, Florida, and Myrtle Beach, visiting family, driving the motorhome and toy haulers around the country, 4-wheeling, and especially boating. Visiting family on Vancouver Island and Michigan was a regular occurrence for many wonderful years. He learned to play golf later in life and was passionate about playing it with his son. His favorite place was the family cottage in Mackinaw, and there was nothing he loved more than spending time with his family. He is greatly missed by all who knew him!A private celebration will take place at the family cottage in Mackinaw this summer. Arrangements were entrusted to Grace Memorial-Smith Chapel. If desired, contributions can be made to the Karmanos Cancer Foundation, 4100 John R, Detroit, MI 48201, or online at karmanos.org/giftofhope. They lived in Las Vegas together for 25 years before moving to Michigan in 2011. He always said he was “anti-social,” but you would never know that to talk with him. Really, it was that he would just rather spend time with his family. Robert’s unconditional love and support of his family have had a profound and lifelong impact on them. He is greatly missed by all who knew him!
A private celebration will take place at the family cottage in Mackinaw this summer. Arrangements were entrusted to Grace Memorial-Smith Chapel.
