Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, achievements, and details about their life. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They can help facilitate communication among loved ones, allow people to pay their respects, and provide closure during a difficult time.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. It may also include funeral or memorial service details.

Who writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with crafting the notice. The writer should aim to capture the essence and personality of the person who has passed away.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to gather information, write, and edit the obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or multiple photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the notice and help people remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies depending on the publication. You can usually find submission guidelines on the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the written notice and any required documentation or payment.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, making changes to an already published obituary can be challenging or impossible. It's essential to carefully review and proofread the notice before submitting it to ensure accuracy and correctness.

How long does an obituary stay online?

The duration for which an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some websites may keep obituaries online permanently, while others may remove them after a certain period, such as 30 days or 1 year.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

If you want to republish an obituary at a later date, you may need to contact the original publication or website where it was first posted. They may have policies or procedures in place for re-publishing or archiving obituaries.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized notice that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the deceased that you're unsure about sharing publicly, it's best to err on the side of caution and omit them from the obituary. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments instead.

How do I notify social media platforms about someone's passing?

Each social media platform has its own process for reporting a user's passing and handling their account accordingly. You can usually find this information in the platform's help section or terms of service.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

How do I handle conflicting opinions about what to include in an obituary?

In situations where there are differing opinions about what to include in an obituary, try to find common ground among family members and focus on celebrating the deceased's life rather than dwelling on disagreements.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to reflect on their life and legacy. This can also help alleviate some of the burden from loved ones during a difficult time.

What if I'm unsure about what type of information to include in an obitary?
