Thelma Cullars - September 26, 1929 - February 14, 2022

Departed: 02/14/2022 (Orangeburg)
Obituary Preview: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.
Trust in God; trust also in me.
In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you”. ~ John 14: 1-3
Thelma Brown Cullars was born on Thursday, September 26, 1929 in St. Matthews, S.C. and departed this life on Monday, February 14, 2022 after a short stay at the White Oak Nursing facility in Rock Hill, SC.  She was surrounded by her loving family.  Thelma was one of twelve children born to the late Frank and Francis E. Weststone Brown.  She was preceded in death by all of her siblings, her eldest daughter; Rosemary Burroughs and her only son; Eddie Shuler.
At an early age, Thelma joined the Greater Mt. Pisgah AME Church, in St. Matthews, S.C. and maintained an affiliation with Mt. Pisgah throughout her life.  She moved to Bronx, New York in 1959, where she lived for 23 years.  During her time in New York, Thelma attended Spring Green Baptist Church and Greater Universal Baptist Church.  No matter where she lived, Thelma was a pillar of her community who shared God’s word with everyone she met.  To show her love for Christ, she would often wear a hat, shirt, scarf or jewelry displaying  love for her Savior and perfect strangers would stop her to communicate their love for Christ.
When she returned to SC, she and her husband, Crawford Cullars, purchased a pink house on Greenville Street in Orangeburg.  She was known to always have a bible on her kitchen table and she witnessed to all of her visitors about the greatness of God.  She freely shared her wisdom and great food with everyone, which led to many adopting her as their second mother.  She affectionately became known as “Ma” to all. Thelma has always loved feeding people and her life’s work reflected that passion.  She held positions in meat packaging, cooked in a cafeteria, and served as a dietary aid in a nursing facility.  She also owned her own soul-food restaurant called “Ma’s Place,” where she made every item from scratch and cooked organically long before it became popular.  Although, she had a 6th grade education, her goals and ambitions far exceeded her educational attainments.  She inspired all of her children to pursue higher education (which they all did) and she constantly told them, “You can be anything you want to be in this world.”  She often said, “If I had been able to get higher education, I would have probably been the President of the United States!”
Thelma leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 52 1/2 years, Crawford Cullars; three loving daughters; Ann Frances Shuler (Erasmo Gual), Valeria Shuler and Dawn Johnson (Lyman T.); 13 grandchildren; Lashawn Lee, Janel Howard, Felicia Brown, Sean Hunter, Danielle Hatchett, Terri Bennett-Bess, Kip Lee (Koya), Garry Shuler, Ashley Shuler, Channon Burroughs, Nijera Shuler, Nia Shuler, and Teryn Johnson.  She has several honorary children; Shirley Garrett and granddaughters, Kim Blakeley and Janell Richardson, Jane Hunter, Tonzel Shuler (Helen), and Wilbur Shuler (Queen Ella).  She also leaves several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, special relatives and close friends.

Departed: 02/11/2022 (Orangeburg)
Obituary Preview: Daughter. Sister. Aunt. Cousin. Wife. In-Law. Mother. Grandmother. Friend. Child of God. Sister Carrie Mae Simpson, the third oldest child of the late Eugene and Alfair Frazier, was born on May 24, 1943, in Orangeburg County.  On February 11, 2022, God called her from labor to reward.
A lifelong resident of the Canaan Community, Sister Simpson attended G. W. Carver High School. As she entered the workforce, she became employed at Bamberg Manufacturing in Bamberg, SC. She later moved to Ambler Industries, Inc. Orangeburg, SC where she worked as a bar tacker until the plant closed in 1995.  Working in the manufacturing industry helped to foster her love of sewing. Sister Simpson had an eye for fashion. She was an excellent seamstress who created many of her own fashion statements throughout the years.  She developed an interest in retail sales and worked in customer service for Maxway, Fred’s, and Roses Department Stores before her retirement in 2016. Upon her retirement, Sister Simpson became a volunteer at The Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg, SC.
At an early age, she joined Emanuel A. M. E. Church, Cope, SC where she sang in the choir. It was also there that she met the love of her life, Reverend Odell Simpson, whom she married on February 17, 1963. She remained a member of Emanuel until May 1981, when Reverend Simpson was called to the ministry, and the family joined Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Cordova, SC. Shortly afterwards, Rev. Simpson became the pastor of Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, St. Matthews, SC and New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Bowman, SC.
However, being the First Lady of Greater Zion and New Mt. Zion did not stop Sister Simpson from continuing to support Pine Grove and Emanuel.  She organized and was president of the Pine Grove Gospel Choir.  Under her leadership, each year on the third Sunday in March, the choir gave a soul stirring anniversary program to a crowd that was almost always standing room only.  In addition, Sister Simpson often returned to Emanuel throughout the years to be the mistress of ceremony for various choir anniversaries. At Greater Zion and New Mt. Zion, she continued to support church programs, sang in the choirs, and traveled with Pastor Simpson as he preached God’s word. In her own right, Sister Simpson was also a spirit filled, featured speaker at various churches for special occasions such as Women’s Day and Mother’s Day programs.
In addition to her parents, Sister Simpson is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, 10 months, and 8 days, Pastor Odell Simpson; siblings: Franklin Frazier and Leila Mae Frazier Webb, an infant daughter, and a son, Sherman Frazier.
To continue Sister Simpson’s legacy are: her daughter, Cynthia (Kirian) Simpson-Obioha of Columbia, SC, and her son, Randy (Sharon) Simpson of Orangeburg, SC; her grandchildren: Kelvin Obioha of Charleston, SC; Cameron Obioha of Atlanta, GA; Jordan Antley of Honolulu, Hawaii; Asha Simpson of Jacksonville, FL; Austen Simpson, Emoree Simpson, and Braelyn Simpson of Orangeburg, SC; Antwan Frazier of Blythewood, SC; Tremaine Frazier of Orangeburg, SC; along with four great-grandchildren.
Also left to cherish fond memories are her brother, (Ret.) Command Sergeant Major Horris L. (Sandy) Frazier of Columbia, SC; her sisters:  Beatrice Dixon of Orangeburg, SC; Patricia (Jimmy) Hardy of Greensboro, NC; Jimmie Dean Frazier of Brooklyn, NY; Deborah (Kevin) Dubose of Jacksonville, FL; Sisters-in-law, Louise Simpson of Cope, SC; Bernice Prince, Pearl Jennings, and Ruthie Simpson, all of Orangeburg, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and parishioners who will miss her dearly.
