Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Anderson-Wills, 96 of Springfield, formerly of Girard passed away peacefully on October 30, 2023 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. She was born August 8, 1927 in Waverly, the daughter of Peter M. and Bessie Elizabeth (Crouse) Large. She married James Leo Anderson in December of 1947 and he preceded her in death in January of 1970. She then married Roy R. Wills in September of 1975 and he preceded her in death in March of 2009.
Elizabeth had worked for Horace-Mann Insurance Company in Springfield for over 22 years until her retirement. She was a member of Kumler United Methodist Church in Springfield. She was known as “Grandma” to everyone at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.
Surviving her passing are her sons Dwayne Wills of Seattle, WA and John (Crystal) Wills of Deland, FL; numerous grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael Wills and sisters Eugenia Lowder, Lucille Steele and Barbara Morris.
Funeral services for Elizabeth will be at 12:00 noon, Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Kumler United Methodist Church in Springfield with Pastor Donald Goodenow officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery, also in Springfield. Visitation will be from 11:00 until the time of services on Thursday at the church.

Linda Kay Peper - March 23, 1939 - October 02, 2023

Obituary Preview: Linda Kay Peper, 84, of Girard, passed away Monday, October 2, 2023, in Hillsboro. She was born on March 23, 1939, in Springfield, the daughter of George and Bessie Mullikin Arnold. She married Harold Peper on December 28, 1958, and he preceded her in death on April 21, 2002.
In addition to her husband, Harold, Linda was preceded in death by one daughter: Cynthany Schroeder.
She is survived by her children: Bethany Peper of Girard, Jerry (Wendy) Peper, of Illiopolis, Lorinda (Mark) Jennings, of Litchfield Tom Peper, of Decatur; and grandchildren: Briana Peper- Meo; Andrew Peper, Kelsey Jennings, Riley Jennings, and Amanda Mann.
Linda worked for several years as a bookkeeper for Farmers Pellet Company. She also worked as an assistant librarian at the Girard Township Library. Linda was a lifetime member of the Boston Chapel Christian Church. She was a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Girard Alumni Association. Linda volunteered and served on the board of the Girard Samaritan Food Pantry for several years. She enjoyed researching genealogy, reading, gardening, flowers, and most especially attending events with her grandchildren.

Linda Crawford Wells - December 13, 1936 - June 26, 2023

Obituary Preview: Linda Crawford Wells, 86, of Girard, entered her eternal rest at 11:12 PM on June 26, 2023. Born on December 13, 1936, to Lindell and Mary (Keith) Crawford of Girard, Linda graduated from Girard High School and went on to study nursing at Washington University in St. Louis. After receiving her nursing degree in 1957, her love for music and for God’s Word led her to Moody Bible Institute in Chicago where she studied piano and sang in the Women’s Glee Club, while also working as a nurse at Northwestern Hospital.
In 1961, during a summer of ministry at Camp of the Woods in upstate New York, she met a young man from North Carolina, Nathaniel Wells. Nat and Linda got married in Girard on December 31, 1963. They were married for 59 ½ years and had three children before moving to the Chicago area in 1970. In 1976, they moved to rural Peotone, Illinois, where they finished raising their children and later welcomed grandchildren. In the fall of 2013, they returned to Linda’s childhood roots and settled at Sunset Lake in Girard, Illinois.
Linda found a place for her nursing skills by caring for the elderly at nursing homes in Peotone and Beecher and she served as the Director of Nursing at the Anchorage of Beecher for many years until she retired in 2002. She invested her musical talent in playing piano and directing the choir at church, and she taught many piano students over the years. In addition to playing the piano, her favorite hobby was cross-stitching, and she blessed many family and friends with beautiful cross-stitched gifts.
Linda will always be loved and remembered for her artistic ability and for her Christlike character. She was a devoted follower of Christ with a gift of encouragement, and she faithfully prayed for her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Nathaniel; three children: Bryan (Candace) Wells, Chris (Angie) Wells and Beth (Gerald) Longjohn; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Linda’s life was celebrated on Sunday, June 25th by a gathering of family and friends at the Girard United Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be sent direct to the church at 401 W. Center St., Girard, IL 62640 and will also be received by Airsman & Calvert Funeral Homes, Girard who is honored to be caring for Linda’ s family.

Obituary Preview: Nancy Hogan, 76 of Girard passed away peacefully Monday, March 27, 2023 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born March 4, 1947 in Springfield, the daughter of Alfred and Adelta (Turner) Stauffer. She married Gary Hogan on February 22, 1985 and he survives her passing.
Nancy was the cook of the family. She loved spending time at home with her grandchildren and to go camping and shopping. She was always a very giving person who always put others needs before hers. Her greatest love was her family and the time spent with them.
In addition to her loving husband Gary, she is survived by her daughters Lori (Brian) Dodd of Girard and Angie Evans of Girard; grandchildren Sarah (Bryan) Hopkins of Shiloh, IL, Jason King of Girard and Jessica (Daniel) Moreth of Franklin, IN; 11 great grandchildren; brother Gary (Barb) Stauffer of Virden and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and grandson Anthony Evans.
In keeping with Nancy’s wishes, a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date.

Michael Joseph Mauk - April 01, 1950 - March 23, 2023

Obituary Preview: Michael “Mike” J. Mauk, 72, of Girard, IL, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2023, in Virden, IL. He was born on April 1, 1950, in Springfield, IL, the son of Lee and Delores Caprance Mauk. He married Laura Kahl, on August 1, 1976, in Springfield, IL and she survives.
In addition to his wife, Laura, he is survived by daughters: Lori Ann, Camille Senae; brother: Richard “Rick” (Molly) Mauk; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mike served four years in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Tattnall. He spent his career as computer programmer and retired from the TSA. Mike was a member of the Girard First Baptist Church, where he loved to teach. He loved reading, especially his bible, camping, and spending time with his friends and family. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at Girard First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church for visitation, from 11:00 a.m., until the time of the service. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Girard First Baptist Church. Obituary Preview: Rex Allen Dunn, 64, of Girard, Illinois passed away peacefully on December 23, 2022 after a year long battle with health issues. He was born on December 24, 1957 in Springfield, Illinois, son of Robert and Virginia Dunn of Girard, Illinois.
Rex was an award winning food salesman with Bunn Capitol in Springfield. His love of music is how most will remember him and he was blessed with musical talent on both the guitar and harmonica. Rex’s fascination with the West took him to Cortez, Colorado several years ago where he unfortunately became ill. He returned to his hometown Girard in early 2022. No matter where he lived, he remained a loyal St. Louis Cardinals fan for his entire life.
Rex was a graduate of Girard High School and attended Lincoln Land Community College from 1977-79.
He is survived by two sons, Benjamin Dunn of California and Joshua Fahey of Florida, three grandchildren, Caspian, Noe and Keanu, two sisters, Melissa Dunn (Bill) Kribs of Missouri, Deborah Dunn Battaglia of Florida, and one brother Randall (Arlinda) Dunn of Florida.
In keeping with his wishes, a private burial will be held at a later date.

Obituary Preview: Erik J. Harms, 42 of Nilwood passed away peacefully Friday, December 16, 2022 at his home. He was born January 16, 1980 in Springfield son of Jeff and Rhonda (Smith) Harms.
Erik had attended St. Isidore Grade School in Farmersville and Sacred Heart Griffin High School, where he played football. He enjoyed mechanics and was very talented with his mechanical abilities. He loved working on his trucks and four wheelers, hunting, being outdoors, music and watching movies. He took pride in the fact that he was his paternal grandfather’s personal caregiver during his grandfather’s last few years of life. Erik was a kind, gentle and loving man.
Erik is survived by his parents, Jeff and Rhonda Harms of Carlinville; sister Deidre (Jerome, Jr.) Rogers of O’Fallon, IL; nieces and nephews Arianna, Aaliyah, Jerome III and Christian Rogers; maternal grandmother Flo Smith; aunts and uncles Keith (Gale) Harms, Karen (Bob) Osmoe, Marsha (Steve) Wright, Randy Smith and Rodney (Melissa) Smith and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Wayne and Kathleen Harms and his maternal grandfather G.W. Smith.
Memorial services celebrating Erik’s life will be held at 12 noon, Thursday, December 22, 2022 at Airsman & Calvert Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Marty Nagel officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 22, 2022 from 10:00 AM until the time of services at the funeral home.

She is survived by her children Debbie (Driscoll) Douglass and husband Randy O’Loughlin of Decatur, Sue (Driscoll) Fouts and husband Rance of Gibson City and Tina (Driscoll) Blazier and husband Carl of Decatur; Linda (Carlton) Driscoll of Peoria, David Carlton and wife Candy of Pekin, Lisa (Carlton) Massinelli and husband Bret of Groveland. Her brother Bill Baucom of Akron, Ohio, sister Helen (Baucom) Link of Collinsville, Il, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers, 2 sisters, sons Don Driscoll, Tim Driscoll, and Terry Driscoll, daughter Cindy Jo Driscoll, Daughter in-law Gail Driscoll, Grandson Earl Driscoll and Great granddaughter Alyssa Webb.
Shirley’s wishes were to be cremated and to have a celebration of life for both Shirley and Earl Carlton on Nov 6th from 1-4 at Coz’s, 1405 East Village Parkway, Mt. Zion, IL 62549.

Douglas "Doug" Pitchford - August 14, 1949 - October 20, 2022

Obituary Preview: Douglas L. “Doug” Pitchford, 73, unexpectedly passed away at 4:30pm on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at his residence. He was born on August 14, 1949, in Springfield, the son of the late Lloyd and Jane (Hall) Pitchford. He married Cecilia “Cec” Royal on August 21, 1971, in Cahokia, and she survives. Other survivors include two sons and daughters in law: Erick and Chrissy Pitchford of Girard, Tyler and Janna Pitchford of Rosewood Heights, four grandchildren: Lucas, Madelynn, Meredith, and Benjamin Pitchford, three step-grandchildren: Madison (Adam) Coleman, Zane and Preston Bradley, and many other extended family and friends.
After graduation from Sangamon State, he was employed by the State of Illinois for twenty years, first as Chief Downstate Law Enforcement Officer for the Illinois Commerce Commission and then at the Appellate Prosecutor’s Office. He then worked at Heritage Packing in Lincoln as a sales representative. Doug coached football and baseball at Virden High School prior to becoming the defensive coordinator at Mahomet – Seymour. He was a high school and junior college referee for many years. He loved the Fighting Illini, the St. Louis Cardinals, golfing, and spending time with his family. Doug was a member of Cross Church in Carlinville. He also served as a Macoupin County Democrat Precinct Committeeman.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4pm to 7pm on Friday, October 28, 2022, at Airsman & Calvert Funeral Home, 200 West Jefferson Street in Girard. Visitation will continue from 10am until time of funeral services at 11am on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at Airsman & Calvert Funeral Home in Girard. His cousin, Steve Ford, will officiate. Burial will follow at Girard Cemetery.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, four sisters, sons Don Driscoll, Tim Driscoll and Terry Driscoll, daughter-in-law Gail Driscoll, grandson Earl Driscoll and great granddaughter Alyssa Webb.

Linda C Kmiecik - October 29, 1940 - July 05, 2022

Obituary Preview: Linda C. Kmiecik, 81 of Girard passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield with her loving cousin by her side.
Linda Kmiecik was born in Chicago, IL on 29 October 1940 to Harold F. Lightholder formerly of Pontiac, IL and Verna J. (Moomaw) Lightholder formerly of Virden. She graduated from St. Margaret of Scotland Grade School and Academy of Our Lady High School (now closed) on Chicago’s south side and the College (now University) of St. Francis in Joliet with a B.A. After a brief period of teaching English, she worked for ten years for patent attorneys in downtown Chicago and in 1973 moved to employment as administrative assistant when her boss Willis Jensen accepted the position of Vice President of Engineering of the now defunct Duo-Fast Corporation of Franklin Park, near O’Hare Airport.
Following a brief early marriage, she married Anthony “Tony” Kmiecik, another Duo-Faster in November 1982 in Franklin Park. They lived in Bensenville until early retirement in July 1997 brought them to Girard, settling finally in Hillcrest Estates across the road from Oak Leaf Country Club allowing Tony to play golf anywhere, any time and Linda to research her family history, especially her maternal grandfather Fred Sterling, born 1879 and adopted as Fred Moomaw of Virden.
She was an avid genealogist since 1979, a member of the Macoupin County Genealogical Society, Macoupin County Historical Society, Montgomery County Genealogical Society and others in Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Connecticut. She was a founding volunteer at the Macoupin County Archives in Carlinville, a member of the 2005 Girard Sesquicentennial Book Committee and of the Virden Woman’s Club. She self-published three genealogies in the 1990s: The Early Drury Line of New England and Descendants of Samuel and Hannah Drury on her mother’s ancestry and the three-volume Lightholder of Ireland and America on her father’s ancestry. In 2016 she took the Ancestry DNA test learning that was 70% British Isles (English, Welsh, Scots), 23% Irish, 5% Iberian Peninsula, 2% Italy/Greece and <1% Western Europe. This test FINALLY showed her adopted paternal grandmother of Springfield, IL was 100% British Isles.
She is survived by maternal cousin Verna Scharfenberg of Virden and others in the Macoupin Co, IL area and Clinton, IL; paternal Lightholder cousins in the Chicago area and Mukwonago, Wisconsin and Dolton cousins in Peoria and Washington, IL, San Diego and Austin, TX and other cousins on both sides across America and in County Meath, Ireland.
In keeping with Linda’s wishes, private family services will be held with burial at Virden Cemetery.

Bonnie was a Certified Nursing Assistant at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Virden for numerous years and loved the residents and her job. Her life revolved around her family, grandchildren and pets.
Bonnie is survived by her daughters Crystal (Bud) Kean and Dani Trent, step-sons Josh Nance and Matt (Erika) Nance, grandchildren-which were the light of her life Carol, David, Marion, Chlowy, Jesse, Gavyn and Axl, sisters Nicole (Mike) Wood, Lori Stephenson-Dodson, Kathy Trent, brothers George (Karen) Trent and Randy (Deava) Stephenson, sister-in-law Cindy Stephenson, several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Theresa Stults and Barb Sculley, brother Roger Stephenson, nephews Malinki and Jordan Whitaker and son-in-law Bob McAllister.
Bonnie’s family will be hosting a Celebration of Life gathering at 12 Noon on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at the Thayer Community Building. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Palmyra at a later date.

Randy had served his Country in the United States Army as a Sergeant and was of the Baptist faith. He had worked numerous years in the construction industry.

(Nancy) Edge, Jr. of Springfield and Darrell (Elaine) Edge of Hannibal, MO; sisters Shirley Worth of Virden and Debbie (Gordon "Butch") Probst of Palmyra; his former wife Corinna Edge of Decatur and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Danny Worth.
Randy's family will be hosting a Celebration of Life Service at 11:30 AM at the Grace Southern Baptist Church, 302 West Wright Street in Virden on Saturday, January 29, 2022 and will greet friends from 11:00 AM until the time of the service and also after the service at the Church. Private family graveside services will be held at Girard Cemetery.

She was a member of New Beginnings Baptist Church in Girard. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and fishing. Most of all, she loved her family and spending time with them.
Patricia is survived by her son David Riecks (Companion Jennifer Cookson) of Newark, AR, daughter Saralyne (Jeff) Austif of Taylorville, 10 grandchildren, brother John Warren of Springfield, sisters Carol Warren of West Plains, MO and Kathy Warren of Springfield and numerous nieces and nephews.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Girard and had worked earlier in life as a Nurse’s Assistant at St. John’s Hospital and later for the State of Illinois Department of Public Aid. Her greatest love in life was her family and was a very devoted Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Great-Great Grandmother.
Lillian is survived by sons Leonard (Peggy) Jackson of Springfield, Roger (Keila) Jackson of Girard, Mark (Monica) Jackson of Springfield, Marlin (Karen) Jackson of Girard, Randy (Vickie) Jackson of Rochester and Brad (Amy) Jackson of Springfield; her daughter Kathy (Louie) Re of Girard; 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Beverly Ann Laycock and her brothers and sisters.
Private graveside services will be held at Virden Cemetery with Reverend Larry Griffith officiating.

She then married Harold Wagahoff and he also preceded her in death.
Clara retired after many years as a Supervisor at Dickey-John. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Girard. She was an avid BINGO player and loved to dance; especially Ballroom dances.
She is survived by her daughters Carol Davidson of Girard and Judy (Charles) Foster of Auburn, daughter-in-law Loretta Schroeder of Farmersville, grandchildren Brenda (Bret) Foland, Thomas “Joe” (Marcy) Schroeder, Kristal (Dave) Adams, Clayton (Mindy) Foster, Stacey Harrison, Monica Whalen, Angie (Mike) Agnich, granddaughter-in-law Cindy Schroeder, 20 great grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren, her twin sister Dorothy Jenkins of Virden and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son Larry Schroeder, Sr., grandson Larry Schroeder, Jr., twin great-granddaughters in infancy, brothers Albert Austin and Johnny Austin, sisters Lena Weddle and Norma Jean Killam, and her son-in-law Steve Davidson.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Virden Cemetery with Pastor Dan Roseberry officiating. Interment will immediately follow. Friends and extended family are asked to join her family directly at the cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Jack A. Peters, 91 of Girard peacefully joined our Heavenly Father at his daughter’s home on March 20, 2021 with his loving family by his side. He was born October 31, 1929 in Pine Bluff, WY son of Henry A. and Clara C. (Garver) Peters. He married Ellen I. Page on November 3, 1950 in San Rafale, CA and she preceded him in death on September 1, 1990.
Jack proudly served his Country in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1952. He retired as a Machinist from Fiat-Allis in Springfield after 30 years of faithful service and was in the farming and construction business for many years. He also owned Pete’s Repair Shop for many years. He was an active member of the Virden American Legion Post 386, serving as Commander for 2 terms and cooked fish there for many years. Jack was also an active member of the Virden First Presbyterian Church serving on many Boards and Committees as well as serving as Deacon and Trustee for numerous years. He also took pride in his active role within the Virden Scouting community for many years. He also loved to collect and sell antiques and had a booth for numerous years at the Lighthouse Antique Mall and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
He is survived by his partner Pat DeFevers of Virden; sons Randy (Sheryl) Peters of TN and Rick (Carol) Peters of AR; his daughter Teri Peters and significant other Jim Stayton of Girard; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister Peggy Jones of OK and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ellen, son Dan Peters, brothers Paul, Marion (Helen), Max (Alice), Myron (Helen) Peters, sister Louise Peters and brother-in-law Billy Jones.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church in Virden with Reverend John Huxtable officiating. Private family burial will follow at Virden Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by Virden American Legion Post 386.

Dustin was born March 29, 1981 in Springfield, IL a son to Richard M. Mack & Shelia A. (Mack) – Wisnasky. Dustin was a 1999 graduate of Auburn High School where he enjoyed playing basketball, football and running track. He worked as a Technician in the Heating and Air Conditioning Industry. Where he was set to take over the Mack’s family business. Dustin loved nice cars and jewelry. He took pride in his enormous shoe collection. Dustin loved his children, family and friends very much!
Dustin was the oldest of 3 children. Outwardly Dusty looked like he had it all: Confidence, athletic ability, height, beautiful blue eyes, broad smile and the ability to engage and forge a relationship with anyone. Inwardly Dustin was fighting his own battle with mental illness. We loved Dustin with all of our hearts, but we now know that was not enough to fight mental illness alone, he turned to self-medication.
This note is not an attempt to assign blame for Dustin’s death. We write this obituary in the hope that it may provide an insight to those that need to change their behavior one day at a time.
Dustin could never be completely be honest about the trouble he was in, but his love for his son and daughter became a lifeline over the past few years. He recently completed drug rehab, but the craving that comes from true addiction was more then he could overcome.
This note is a simple reminder to anyone struggling, that there are people who love you, with everything they have no matter what you do- don’t be afraid / ashamed or scared to ask for help. Dustin had been attending Chatham Baptist Church where he found God. Dusty is finally at peace. We will forever miss your sense of humor, your knack for telling stories, your love of cars, your impeccable taste for only the BEST, and your rhythm on the dance floor. Goodbye Dustin you will be missed by so many we love you and miss you so much!!!
