Allen A. Zappone - November 28, 1938 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Linwood)
Obituary Preview: It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our family's patriarch Allen A. Zappone (formerly of Linwood, NJ and more recently residing in Mays Landing, NJ on the Egg Harbor River).
Allen Alphonse Zappone passed away on April 11th in Mays Landing, NJ at nearly 86 years old.
Son of Josephine Zappone (Nizzari), and Frank Zappone, he was born November 28, 1938, in New York, NY. Raised in the Bronx's "Little Italy" with many lessons from the school of hard knocks, Allen graduated from a private parochial institution, Salesian High School, in 1956 with top grades. Subsequently, Allen spent some years studying engineering at Dayton University in Ohio on a scholarship (after receiving a perfect score on the math section of the SATs for college admission). However, he ultimately preferred learning in the field to the classroom and entered the construction business shortly after. He began in the business working as a surveyor and learning the mechanics of vertical construction in New York, NY. He worked his entire life in the commercial construction industry, moving his young family from New York to West Berlin, NJ and shortly thereafter to Linwood, NJ in the 1960s. At that time, he met the Fabi construction family and began sharing his knowledge to help form one of the most successful and dominating construction companies in South Jersey and the surrounding area. He brought high rise concrete construction to South Jersey and eventually took over FABI, Inc. (Now PRO Construction) in the 1980s. Allen changed the coast skyline and redefined Atlantic City with high rise casinos and towers. Along the way, he helped shape and define the way construction companies and unions continue to work today. Last year, Allen was nominated for the life time achievement award by the American Society of Concrete Contractors, and he has won several other awards and accolades in his industry through the years. He was also recently inducted into the Labor Museum in Atlantic City, and served as a board member for the Labor Union. He was also a board member for many organizations over many years. Allen never retired. He kept working and sharing his knowledge to the very end. He had an iron will, and truly did it his way.
During his "later" years he traveled to Italy and spent his winters at his other home in West Palm, FL on the bay with his partner Kathleen Mitchell, who he loved dearly. As a younger man, he traveled to many countries, including China, islands in the tropics, and he hiked many of the National Parks. He loved nature, the ocean and enjoyed boating, as well as Jet skiing, which he did well into his 80’s. (originally stemming from his teenage years as a skilled waterskier at his parents’ summer home in Long Island, NY). His home(s) have always been waterfront for the vast majority of his life, as well as in the mountains in the Poconos. He also loved bald eagles and enjoyed often seeing them in flight at his home on the river. He was extremely proud of his three sons, and exemplified to each of them a work ethic beyond measure, as well as a love for the ocean, adventures, and water activities. He was quietly philanthropic and gave anonymously to many local charities in the community throughout the years. Moreover, he attended Catholic Mass Services nearly every day and prayed for his loved ones and those in need. He also enjoyed watching professional sporting events, but especially the Yankee’s.
He was preceded to heaven by his mother and father, ex-wife Patricia Zappone (the mother of his children). aunts, and uncles. He is survived by his partner Kathleen Mitchell, his children: Derrick Zappone (Katy) of St. Augustine, FL, Matthew Zappone (Melanie) of Margate, NJ, Mark Zappone of Linwood, NJ; Six grandchildren: Kayla Hires (Eric), Alec Zappone, Charity Walton (Zack), Bodhi Zappone, Marina Zappone, and Mitchell Zappone; One great grandchild: Emmit Hires; brother Francis Zappone, Jr of Southhampton, NY; sister June Minadeo of Ossining, NY as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephew, and Godchildren.
Allen was a deeply beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin, brother, and friend.
While we lost our most beloved father, many have lost a friend and loved one in him. He loved his friends and family. Allen was always willing to listen and help anyone in need. His kindness and generosity will forever be remembered by many families in and around our area. There was so much more to him than just dad, though to us that was his greatest role - he was also a friend, a boss, a coworker, a colleague, a cousin, a brother, and more.
We invite you all to share pictures or memories.

Maria’s life was filled with joy, sparkles, and lots of bright pink lipstick. She had the most magnetic personality, and a laugh that was contagious. Maria knew that every day is a beautiful gift - with that gift, she created the life she wanted to live, and chose happiness every step of the way.
Throughout her life, Maria was a creative and crafty person. She grew up in the 1930s with very little money. Those struggles taught her how to create beautiful things from nothing. She was resourceful, and always had an eye for style, which led to a successful modeling career in her younger years, and an abundance of fashionable outfits and eye-catching accessories in her later years.
She was a master of the arts - sewing, crafting, cooking, and gardening, to name a few. She was well known for her beautiful handmade birthday cards, stylish custom outfits, and her homegrown jersey tomatoes. Her home was filled with art, both fine goods and thrifted treasures, and always featured the scent of a homemade delicious baked good ready to serve. She was a Gold Life Master bridge player with 4,700 total points, and enjoyed playing everyday, both in-person and online. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of her loved ones. We will always remember the laughs we shared and the wisdom she passed on.

Jim’s balanced approach of Navy precision coupled with a joyous light hearted nature defines the legacy he has left behind in the countless hearts of musicians he has touched. Everybody loved Mr. Grant.
