Geraldine Coleman - January 25, 1942 - November 16, 2021

Departed: 11/16/2021 (Pittsburgh)
Obituary Preview: PROPHETESS GERALDINE “Gerry” COLEMAN
Prophetess Geraldine Coleman was born and raised in Wilmington, NC on January 25, 1942 to John Simpson and Edna “Evalina” Simpson. A graduate of Williston High School, she later pursued a degree of Elementary Education from Shaw University in North Carolina where she studied and was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. After graduating, she taught in Virginia and later moved to New York to be with family and taught in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood and became the head of the teacher’s union. While at Shaw University she met her soulmate, future husband, minister and leader of souls, William Coleman, whom she spent 46 loving years with.
She was an avid traveler, tipping the coasts of Italy, France, UK, Jamaica, Bahamas to name a few. She loved to take pictures, so much so that she dabbled in photography and even showed professional photographers a thing or two. Photography wasn’t her only avocation, as she did then and still did to the day of her taking, we were taken by the way she knew how to jam! You would have to turn in cause she would turn out a dance floor! Some of her favorite artists included Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, The O’Jays and some Marvin Gaye (Got to give it up).
She later moved to Pittsburgh, PA and married the love of her life, William Coleman. In 1975, she joined The Church of the Living God the Pillar and Ground of the Truth the same day as her husband with no prior discussion between the two, unaware that her husband was getting up to join at the same time. She was indeed an inspiration to all the women in the church, affluent in the faith, immensely knowledgeable in the scriptures, and taught scriptural lessons to the children of the church upstairs and cooked her butt off in the kitchen during the feasts. She was a mother, grandmother and mentor to all the saints.
She was an ardent reader with tons of books. She shared that love of books with her grandchildren and enjoyed reading to them and giving them books with special messages inside. One of her favorite book series was the Danielle Steele collections. Her husband teased her that she should read the scriptures as she did those novels, not only did she but allowed others to come and light their flame at her torch in enlightenment of the scriptures. She was a great conversationalist with an extensive vocabulary, which she used to tell the most vivid stories to illustrate any point. She also had a great sense of humor, making others laugh while enjoying a good laugh herself.
She was an amazing wife, mother, sister, auntie, cousin and Prophetess. Due to her unprecedented loving kindness, she was deemed a mother to the saints of all ages and that extension of love was carried to friends of the family whom also looked to her as their second mom or “mom” in general.
On the morning of 3rd day, November 16th 2021, Prophetess passed away at home suddenly. Prophetess was 79 years young. She is preceded in death by her parents John and Evalina and sister Carolyn, sister Alma, brother Moses, sister Illa, sister Rennie, brother John Thomas, brother Theodore, brother Aaron, sister Grace Lewis. She leaves to mourn her husband, Apostle William Coleman, her children, Janean, Cephas (Ruth), Caleb (Erica) and Lemuel, her grandchildren, Zemira, Zhavia, Rylan and Jonathan; her sister Doris, brother John T. (Mildred), sister-in-law Norma, aunt Bertha May Foster and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Her story can’t be told in just these few words, but God made allowance for these, the Earth wasn’t big enough to encapsulate the love she had for those she encountered. All praises to the Heavenly King for blessing us with her presence on Earth. She sang 'Shine on Me', thanks to Yeshua her light is still shining… Services will be held at West Funeral Home 2215 Wylie Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15219 Visitation: Sunday, November 21, 2021   2pm-6pm Service: Monday,  November 22, 2021. 11am Arrangements entrusted to George A. Juanita was baptized and nurtured in Bethel A.M.E. Church in Ensley, Alabama and confessed Christ at an early age. She went from the Cradle Roll, YPD and became a Life Member of the Women’s Missionary Society. Juanita was educated in the Birmingham and Fairfield, Alabama school system. She was a proud graduate of Wilberforce University where she was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and earned a degree in education in 1961. Rufus Arterberry, Sr. in 1962 and to this union was born one son, Rufus Arterberry, Jr. Being the wife of an A.M.E minister she was by his side to his various appointments in Erie, Pa, Cincinnati, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pa. Although her husband was the Pastor, Juanita had her own ministry which was working with children and music serving as musician whenever needed. Juanita organized the ‘Little Angels” choir at Bethel A.M.E in Pittsburgh and wrote and directed plays for the children. She was so proud of the children and fostered long lasting relationships at every church where her husband pastored. After the death of her husband, Juanita joined St. James A.M.E Pittsburgh under the pastorship of Rev. Frederick Wright, Sr. She became active in the life of the church claiming her pew in the back of the sanctuary, but working to serve the Lord. Juanita was a life member of the Women’s Missionary Society and served as President of the Lydia A. Lowery Missionary Society at St. James, organized the Pastor’s Aide Society, the Caregiver’s Ministry supporting those who were caring for ill loved ones and played the piano while directing the Chapel Choir at the 8 a.m. Service. Juanita served on the St. James Steward Board and was an advisor and confidante to every Pastor. Yet her proudest accomplishment was her son, the Rev. Rufus Arterberry, Jr. After “Junior” went into the ministry, Juanita became the mother to many of his friends and peers who were also young ministers, her special sons, the Rev. Eric L. Brown and the late Rev. Eugene Schoolfield. The heartbeat of her service was with the Connectional Church working with the World Methodist Council of Churches, traveling to Africa to help build water wells. Juanita worked with he Connectional YPD as advisor and teacher traveling to the Dominican Republic, Ireland and Kingston, Jamaica. She frequently taught at the 3rd District A.M.E, Tawawa Youth Retreat. Juanita retired from the Allegheny County Civil Service Commission and St. Benedict Catholic School. Strong in her faith, Juanita often said the Lord “has been mighty good to me”. Despite health problems as a child and most of her adult life, and the death of her husband and son, she never complained trusting that God was always with her. Possessing a humble heart, a warm spirit; always looking to help and encourage others especially children, Juanita leaves a legacy of love and dedication to the A.M.E church, her family and numerous friends. Juanita was grateful to those who helped her in the care of her mother; Mary Sims, Audrey Gilliard, Alisa Hakim, Jan Shipp and Juanita’s caregivers, Viveca and Domingo Powell and Daphne Salter Austin.
