Mark Edwin Morrison, MD, PhD - May 31, 1955 - April 13, 2020

Departed: 04/13/2020 (New York)
Obituary Preview: On April 13, 2020, Mark Edwin Morrison, MD, PhD passed away peacefully after a long illness just short of his 65th birthday. He was without his family at his side, because of this current pandemic, but had the support, and dedicated care of the staff that had worked with him, and his family, for the past nine months. He leaves behind his wife of almost 34 years, Susan Liu, his children, Emily and Peter, his sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Tomas Bagdas, and nieces, Christina and Robin. His parents, Edwin and Helen Morrison, and his beloved grandfather, Peter Morrison, predeceased him.
Mark was a graduate of Rutgers University, and received his MD and PhD from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. His degrees were followed by a residency at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City and an Oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He spent several years as an attending physician and researcher at MSKCC in the Melanoma Group with Alan Houghton, MD as his mentor. He left to work in the pharmaceutical industry spending most of his career in oncology drug development at Pfizer. He also worked at Bristol Meyers Squibb, UnitedHealth Group, and Delcath Systems. Although he spent the majority of his career working in the private sector, he viewed patient care and helping patients his primary goal.
He was an amazing father and husband, who passed on his eclectic taste, and talent in music, dedication to care for others, love of the sciences and technology, and unique sense of humor. His children would always say that he was brilliant enough to program a computer in his sleep, to enlighten them with music they never knew they would love, and to provide highly detailed answers to seemingly simple questions. His wife will always love the absent-minded professor and dreamer, who never gave up, and the endlessly kind, loving, honest, and persistent presence in her life for 40 years.
He was a loyal friend, supportive colleague, and dedicated physician. He would always help anyone search for the answer that was needed. If you needed a job, he would help you find one even when he himself was struggling to find work. If you had a family member who was ill, he would help you find the best care for them. While he was in practice, he was always available to support his patients.

Marie-Elaine Delince - Unknown - April 09, 2020

Departed: 04/09/2020 (New York)
Obituary Preview: Marie-Elaine Delince (née Viard) passed away peacefully in her sleep, on April 9, 2020, at home in Riverdale in an apartment she shared with her two daughters and a grand-daughter. With the help of devoted home-health care workers, the family was able to care for her at home. She was 88 years old. For many years, she had battled Parkinson’s Disease. Her husband, Kern Delince, to whom she had been married for 58 years, predeceased her in 2016.
She was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1931, the youngest of four siblings: Denise, Collette and Daniel. The three Viard girls were known for their sense of style and were dubbed “the three Graces”.
Marie-Elaine had a great sense of irony in her humor but was always tender in her approach to others. She loved fashion. Even during her waning last years, she took notice of what style, colors and fabrics those she came into contact with were wearing. While in Port-au-Prince, in the early 1950’s, she along with her sisters opened a showroom called Magie de Femme where they would present their seasonal collection.
Her father, Justin Viard, M.D., was a pediatrician and educator who had written several textbooks used in grade schools throughout Haiti for many decades. Her mother, Christine Doret, was the daughter of Frederick Doret, who was a delegate to the League of Nations and publisher of La Petite Revue.
In 1958, she was introduced to Kern Delince, a Haitian Army Colonel and lawyer, by a mutual friend, and married the same year. However, in 1963 their new life together was abruptly shaken when Kern participated in a failed coup against the dictatorship of Francois Duvalier in 1963. The plot was well documented in Bernard Diederich’s book The Price of Blood: History of Repression and Rebellion in Haiti Under Dr. Francois (2011), as well as in her husband’s book, Quelle Armée pour Haiti? (1994).
Marie-Elaine, had been kept in the dark about her husband’s involvement in the attempted coup. In early April 1963, while out shopping for shoes in Port-au-Prince, she ran into Major Bruce Magruder, who as a U.S. officer with the U.S. Naval Mission in Haiti, who counseled her to stay out of sight, because a plot against the government, in which her husband was implicated, had been foiled. On April 14, 1963, with the assistance of Major Magruder, the couple sought political asylum, under cover of night, at the Brazilian embassy joining other military men, who had been implicated in the plot and their wives. Her home was ransacked and emptied by the dreaded Ton-ton Macoutes. After six weeks of negotiations, the wives, including Marie-Elaine, were permitted to board a Pan Am plane headed for New York, with no money or papers to start a new life in the United States, where she remained until her death.
Upon arriving in New York with her son, Patrick, Marie-Elaine soon realized that what seemed at first a temporary move was becoming a permanent exile. She needed to find a way to make a living, while her husband was still held up at the Brazilian embassy and her other children remained in a precarious situation in Haiti. She took a number of advanced courses in dressmaking and eventually was able to make a living working as a sample dressmaker for several designers, including the fashion house of Bianco. After several years of separation, she was able to reunite with her family. In 1992, she and her husband retired to Florida but returned to New York 20 years later be nearer to their children.

Martin Randall - October 31, 1944 - April 05, 2020

Departed: 04/05/2020 (New York)
Obituary Preview: A post-war baby, Martin was born in Forest Hill, Kent (now in greater London) UK. Everyone said what a beautiful child he was with his fair curly hair and big blue eyes. He was a good runner, winning prizes at his school sports days. He enjoyed many summer holidays with his cousin Richard and friend Christopher as a child. He had a pet black rabbit and enjoyed performing magic tricks.
Attending Clare House Preparatory School in Beckenham, followed by Sevenoaks School, Martin then pursued his studies at the Royal College of Music playing the Double Base, Cello and Piano. His father bought him a Mini so that he could transport his double base to and from the college and later to concerts. Martin played with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1960s in London and other cities around the UK.
Re-locating to Ireland for a period, Martin subsequently travelled to live and work in Canada before finally settling in New York, of which he was a very proud resident for the rest if his life. As far as Martin was concerned, nothing compared to NY for its cultural and social life. He eventually also became a US citizen.
Martin was part of the NY gay community and suffered the loss of many dear friends and partners during the AIDS epidemic. This must have been a dreadful thing to experience and a very painful time.
When Martin could no longer work as a musician, he made a living from taxi driving and subsequently, doing tax returns for private clients.
Even during difficult times Martin’s dry and cutting humour abounded. He loved having a dig at politicians and discussing the political and social topics of the day. He was a great conversationalist and liked nothing more than company whether in person over a good meal or on the telephone. He was very interested in the family even from afar and kept in touch regularly with his sister in the UK.
A big Lawn Tennis fan, Martin watched all the grand slams including Forest Hills and, of course, Wimbledon. He loved discussing players, statistics and the matches. Attending classical music concerts, the theatre, ballet and musicals in NY was another great love of Martin’s.
Martin is also remembered as a lively host and raconteur. He particularly enjoyed seeing family from the UK and loved arranging accommodation and itineraries for them in NY. It gave him great pleasure to treat visitors to shows or concerts at venues such as the Lincoln Centre and Radio City Music Hall. In memory of Martin and in lieu of flowers, please donate online to Saint George’s Society, New York, which cared for Martin over many years, by visiting the website donation page: stgeorgessociety.org/donate

Cornelius M. McShane - August 05, 1935 - February 09, 2019

Departed: 02/09/2019 (New York)
Obituary Preview: Cornelius McShane, 83, of New York, N.Y. passed away on February 9th, 2019.
Born August 5, 1935, to parents Connell and Mary McShane, Neil spent his childhood in Far Rockaway, Queens, growing up with his sister Mary Theresa and first cousins Mary and Bill Madden. He attended Catholic grammar school and eventually received a scholarship to attend Bishop Loughlin High School. After serving in France for several years as a member of the Armed Services, he returned on the G.I. Bill to earn a degree in finance from Saint John’s University and eventually an M.B.A. from New York University. Hired by IBM upon graduation, he left shortly after that to start a 34-year career with Met Life in the Real Estate Investments Division.
On June 30, 1962, Neil married Carol Coleman. They spent their early married years in Stuyvesant Town, but decided after their fourth child was born that apartment living was not going to work for a family of six. A purchase of a delightful, but older home for $60,000 soon transpired, and a new life for the family began in Montvale, N.J. The children attended school, Carol secured a job as an elementary teacher, and Neil dutifully boarded the 6:27 AM train every morning on his way to Met Life. He served as a member of the planning and zoning board for 17 years and was accordingly awarded Citizen of the Year in 1987.
In 1974 during the gas crisis, as Neil and Carol were searching for a summer rental on the north fork of Long Island, they identified a suitable cottage but were then informed by their realtor that the owner was desperate to sell. With a $6000 down payment and $2000 owner financing, the home was theirs. Such began a life of weekend trips to Nassau Point, summers for Carol at the beach, summer employment for the kids, and annual extended family gatherings at the end of August. Neil helped coordinate the Annual Children’s Picnic, The Garage Sale at the Beach and was elected President of the Nassau Point Property Owner’s Association. In time, the simple cottage became a cherished place to celebrate life, friendship, and family.
In the early 1990’s Neil and Carol began living their dream retirement. With all their children graduated from college, they traveled internationally, expanded the summer cottage, and based themselves out of Peter Cooper Village in New York City. And of course, there was more time to spend with the grandchildren.
Neil is survived by his wife Carol, sister: Mary Theresa Basile, children: Neil Jr, Gregory(wife Peggy), Jennifer(husband Michael), Christopher(wife Mishelle), and grandchildren: Brendan, Aedan, Brigid, Erin, Shannon, Peter, Sean, Isabella, and Joseph. A wake is Thursday, Feb 14th, 2019 from 2 – 4 PM and 7 – 9 PM at Gannon Funeral Home(152 E. 28th St. New York City 10016)
