Joycelee was a loving wife for 62 years, mother of 3 children, grandmother of 6, and great grandmother of 10. She loved her family and having them visit her over the years. Joycelee supported her family by working the early shift for Montgomery Ward Warehouse, where she opened and sorted mail for many years. Then she worked for 25 years at Western Electric, which later became AT&T in Lee’s Summit, MO, where she was a wire “woman” that fused electronic parts together for the phone systems. Joycelee retired from working at AT&T in 1986 at the young age of 55.
Over the years Joycelee was an avid quilter, making quilts with love especially for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening flowers, plants, and vegetables each summer that she could can and have handy for meals she was famous for cooking. She was a fantastic baker, making pies, cobblers, and cinnamon rolls. Every year around the holidays Joycelee would make batches of her famous cinnamon rolls and invite the family to join her and Norman. He was in charge of melting the butter! They loved to have everyone gathered at their home to hear the stories and laughter that came with it. Even extended family from out of town would come to savor in this joy.
After Joycelee and Norman both retired, they spent most of their time traveling together in their motorhome across the country. They would spend half of the year in warmer climates such as Laughlin, Nevada, and surrounding areas. During the summer time they would stay close to home and take the grandchildren to Lake Paradise, Lone Jack, MO, to camp in the motorhome, swim, play miniature golf and fish. They enjoyed fishing together for crappie at Pony Express Lake, later to have fish fries with family. Joycelee and Norman were avid card game players. They spent many of hours with family and their lifelong friends James and Alma playing canasta or hand & foot. If not playing cards, you could find them at Harrah’s Casino slot machines or playing bingo.
Joycelee came from a family of musicians, her mom, Alta played the fiddle, her sister Kathryn played the piano and she played the guitar. During the last few months as she listened to music, she would mention to those around her how she played guitar and her mom played the fiddle together. She was very proud of how talented her mom was that she shared this story many times. Joycelee shared the birthday with grandson-in-law Kyle Winkler and Great Granddaughter Hailey Vaughn. We were able to celebrate one last birthday with her together at her home in Beautiful Savor Assisted Living, of Belton, MO. She lived there for almost five years making friends with the staff and residents. They all said she was a beautiful, bright person; and loved to hear her giggle and say “I’m not with it.” And she was always ready to play Bingo!
We will miss her beyond words, and will honor her life by sharing memories, continue to make cinnamon rolls, and gathering together to celebrate Joycelee.
