Robert B. Wilson - December 26, 1931 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Brawley)
Obituary Preview: ROBERT BENTON WILSON, JR December 26, 1931 ~ April 8, 2024
Robert Benton Wilson, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home on April 8, 2024. Born to Robert and Esther Wilson on December 26, 1931, Bob joined older sister, Kathryn (Kay), to complete the Wilson family. The siblings shared a uniquely close relationship based on love, loyalty and respect that would last their entire lives.
Bob attended Brawley schools and graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1950. He continued his education at the University of Arizona graduating with an entomology degree in 1954. After graduation, Bob was commissioned to the United States Air Force, serving as a Second Lieutenant at George Air Force Base. Upon his father's death in 1956 he returned to the Imperial Valley to continue the family farming business.
After Bob's return to Brawley, he met Carol Brandt and the couple married on May 10, 1958. They made their home in Brawley and raised four children. It was important to Bob to share his love of the ocean with his family. He would recall stories of water activities from his youth and introduced his family to deep sea fishing, sailing and water skiing. He also relished being a private pilot. This gave him the opportunity to check fields from the sky. Those who worked for Bob during this time anxiously awaited his landings because chances were the whole operation would take a new direction after one of these flights.
Farming was Bob's passion. His farming methods were conservative, his business practices were fair and honest, and his advice was solicited by many. From tending the soil to studying tax laws, to lobbying in Washington DC, Bob dedicated his life to the farm and to the agricultural industry. In 1998 Bob achieved the world record for highest sugar beet production per acre and in 2018, the Imperial County Farm Bureau honored Bob with the Jim Kuhn "Farmer of the Year" Award. Bob served on many boards including the California Beet Growers Association, the Rockwood Chemical Board of Directors and the Brawley Elementary School District Board of Trustees. He was also involved in Rotary International, Navy League and the First Presbyterian Church of Brawley which he attended from birth.
As an individual who was once a very strict father, Bob softened to a comical and sassy grandfather. His witty one liners were often texted from one family member to another and laughed about for days. He enthusiastically shared his advice on life, or as he called it, "free counseling," to anyone who would listen. Bob consistently stressed to his family the values of hard work, education, health, unity and generosity.
Bob never took his health, his family or the gifts bestowed upon him by his parents for granted. He was a man of strong and quiet faith which was always evident in his words and actions. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Esther Wilson and his sister and brother-in-law Kathryn and Don Farquhar.
He is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Carol; his children Dana (Patrick) Hutchinson, Shannon (Tony) Friley, Laura Pfister, Ben (Patti) Wilson and son-in-law Danny Pfister; grandchildren Troy (April) Hutchinson, Lauren Hutchinson, Cole (Karlee) Pfister, Erin (James) Snyder, Dawson Pfister, Ross Wilson, Molly Wilson and Jessica Friley; great grandchildren Payton, Smith and Sophie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and close family friends that lovingly knew him as "Uncle Bob" or "Grandpa Bob." He was a true friend to many, and he cherished those friendships and memories made together.
