Jane G. Fox - February 03, 1927 - March 28, 2024

Obituary Preview: Jane G. Fox, 97, of Friendsville, MD, died on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Cherry Hill Assisted Living in Accident, MD, where she had been lovingly cared for in recent years.
Born February 3, 1927, on a rural farm in the Mill Run area of Friendsville, she was the last surviving of seven children born to the late Dorsey and Laura Guard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur G. Fox, also a native of Friendsville; four brothers, Fred, Harry (Bessie), Leslie (Betty) and John (Mary Ruth); and two sisters, Mary (George) LeFevre and Jessie (Raymond) McCullough.

A child of the Depression, Jane rose to become a much loved and respected leader of her community, largely through her work as teacher and principal at Friendsville Elementary School for some 26 years. There, she touched and enriched the lives of hundreds of children and their families along with the many teachers, aides, administration, and staff.
She retired early to attend to the demands of care for her husband. But when he passed not long after her retirement, Jane shifted focus to other family and community.
Over the next twenty-plus years, she cared for her brothers, sisters, and neighbors in the final chapters of their lives. She became an active and integral member of several organizations ranging from her church to the Garrett County Historical Society, the Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County, Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, Garrett County Department of Social Services, and the Friend Family Museum in Friendsville, where she initiated ‘Sunday Afternoon Storytelling’. But most rewarding, she returned to her first love of teaching and being with children, giving piano lessons in her home to students whom she both adored and demanded their practice.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the many individuals, families and organizations who have shown such great compassion to our loved one over these last several years, most especially wonderful friend and neighbor, the late Tom Fike and the staff of Cherry Hill Assisted Living who attended to their mother’s needs with such grace and capable care.
