A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 71 Bayley Road, Massena on February 17, 2024 at 3 PM. Arrangements for Richard are under the care and guidance of Frary Funeral Home, 60 Maple Street, Massena.

Richard was born on October 18, 1941 the son of the late Ernest J. Sr. and Beatrice (Clemmo) White. He married Louise Verville on October 25, 1986, Mrs. White died on February 17, 2016. Richard was employed Agway Petroleum in Massena as a fuel delivery driver.

Richard is survived by his two siblings, his sister Linda and her husband George Maddison and his brother Lynn and his wife Connie, he is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Richard is predeceased by his parents, a sister Carol, a brother Ernest J., a brother-in-law Jerry Rodas, a sister-in-law Ella Mae.

Sharon was born January 14, 1947 in Potsdam, the daughter of Harry E Marsh Sr. and Alyce M. Perry. She graduated St. Lawrence Central High School in 1965. Sharon was honorably discharged from the US Military after an accident in Florida. At one time Sharon worked as a record keeper at Montgomery Wards, and she also worked at Highland Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide.

Sharon is survived by her brother, Michael Marsh of Winthrop. She is predeceased by her son, Adam in 1988, her parents, her brother Harry Jr, and twelve infant brothers; Donald James, Douglas Vernon, Bruce Edward, Bryce William, William John, Alan Carl, Albert Frederick, Edward Rolland, Robert E, James Douglas, and two infant sisters, Stella Bertha and Helen. Charlotte. She is also survived by her niece Maggy.

Deborah was born in Syracuse on July 15, 1957, the daughter of Edward and Mae Gmyr. She graduated from Henninger High School. She worked at several GM plants across the US before settling in Massena until her retirement.

She is survived by her daughter Christina, of Ireland, two sisters, Janet of Syracuse and Pam of Norfolk. She is predeceased by eight brothers and sisters. Deborah loved spending time with her daughter, laughing, baking, and watching her dance. She had a great passion for learning new things and could be found reading or doing crafts. She was incredibly generous with a huge heart. She is so deeply loved and will be missed by many.

June was born on June 24, 1934 in Malone, the daughter of Raymond and Eva Legault Lamica. June married John Davis on January 12, 1952 at the Notre Dame Church in Malone. She worked as a housekeeper for various businesses and people in the area.

She is survived by her children; June Davis and her husband Adrian LaMay, Robin “Moose” and his wife Lilly, Yancy and her husband Harold LaPradd, Victoria and her husband Paul Courson, Ralph and his wife Edith, a brother Howard and his wife Pauline, 8 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, and several great great grandchildren. She is predeceased by two sons, John Davis Jr, and William “Duff” Alex.

June enjoyed doing ceramics, dancing and flirting with men. She also enjoyed a good party and watching westerns on tv.

On November 14, 2023 we lost an important part of our family, Thelma R. Matott, age 86, at North Country Rehab and Nursing Center in Massena, after battling a short bout with cancer. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Jerusalem Cemetery in Canton. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home, Massena.

Thelma was born on January 29, 1937 in Chazy, NY, the daughter of Ralph and Doris Turnbull Matott. She graduated from Hugh C. Williams High School, and after graduation she worked at the Kraft Cheese Plant in Sherburne. She moved back to Canton to take care of her parents; she worked on the family farm. After her parents passed away, she became the caretaker of her brother Leland until his passing. Thelma worked for many years as the Assistant Manager at Dairy Queen in Canton until her retirement.

She is survived by her two sisters; Alaine McGill of Hailesboro and Elaine Terry, of Canton, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers, Lloyd, Owen, Burton, Clinton, and Leland, her sisters, Genevieve Wilma, and Joyce Durham. Even though Thelma had no children of her own, she was a second mother to many of us. She was a kind and giving person who was always there when we needed her most.

Thelma loved to do crossword puzzles and word searches. She enjoyed going outside and mowing her yard and planting flowers, and she was quite the card shark at playing rummy.

Obituary Preview: Beverly Edwina Pope, age 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 20, 2023 surrounded by her loving family at Massena Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Beverly was born in the Bronx on December 6, 1932, the daughter of the late Charles J. and Ida Anna (Metzger) Gehrig. She attended school in the Bronx . Beverly was employed as a CNA for over 20 years at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid.

She married the love of her life William J. Pope on June 13, 1953, the couple was married for 66 years. They moved to Saranac Lake in 1969 and resided there until 2002. They also lived in Cherry Valley and the Cobleskill. Beverly moved into Mayfield apartments in Potsdam in 2019. Mr. Pope a retired small business owner in Saranac Lake passed away on July 14, 2019.

Beverly is survived by her daughters, Deborah Butler of Ballston Spa and Theresa (Joel) Church of Norwood. A sister Dorothy Pellegrini of Guilderland, New York, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband William “Bill”, a son William “Billy” P., and a brother Sonny.

Beverly was an avid knitter, who also enjoyed crocheting. It was her joy to spend hours creating beautiful afghans, baby sweater sets and dresses, many of which were given away or bought by others as gifts. Romance novels were another indulgence and she would often be seen by neighbors sitting outside on the lawn, reading. Beverly will be remembered by friends and family as a caring and warm individual with a quirky sense of humor; many a story was told over the years about life in the Bronx and how important family was to her.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Gerald B.H. Soloman Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, New York.

Obituary Preview: Mr. David A. Brown, age 70, passed away on Sunday August 27, 2023 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida with his loving family by his side.

David was born on November 9, 1952, in Massena, NY. He was the son of the late Alton Brown, and the son of Edna Brown Marcellus. He attended school at Massena Central High School and obtained his GED in the military. After leaving school he proudly served his country in the US Army from July of 1970 until August of 1973. During his service David served a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam receiving several awards including the Combat Infantry Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Distinguished Service Medal. After serving in the Army David worked as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.

David enjoyed watching football games, even Canadian Football. He enjoyed the many things life offered him. In his final years David enjoyed time in Florida with his mother and sister.

David is survived by his mother Edna Marcellus of Florida, a sister and brother-in-law Holly and John Sawyer of Florida, three brothers and sister in laws, William and Christine of Ohio, Philip and Diane of Massena, NY, and Ron and Rosemary of Utica NY. David is also survived by his companion Cynthia Hall, daughter Tammy, son Joey, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a beloved son Elliott.

A graveside service will be held on September 23, 2023 at 1PM at the Hopkinton Fort Jackson Cemetery with Rev. Leagon Carlin officiating. Arrangements are with Frary Funeral Home, 60 Maple Street, Massena.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at 11AM, at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Rev. Nick Revilla officiating, followed by burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery. On November 2, 1959, Lorri was born the daughter of Donald and Kathleen (Hastings) Stearns. She was a 1977 graduate from Massena Central School and a graduate from the Massena Business School earning her certificate in secretarial work. Lorri was employed as an Administrative Secretary for the Community Development Program (CDP) in Canton until her Marriage on February 24, 1990 in Louisville, to Joseph DiNapoli.

Lorri is survived by her husband; two daughters, Lauren and Dr. Michael Waterhouse of Valhalla, NY, and Tricia and Alexander Dahlborg of Taby, Sweden; her mother and step father Gerald Tyo; four grandchildren Lillian, Brooke, Autumn, and Elizabeth; three brothers, Donald and his wife, Lise, of Lakeland, Florida, Clark and his wife, Suzanne, of Louisville, and Thomas and his wife, Amy, of Louisville; sisters and brothers in law Georgianna Burns of Ogdensburg, Richard and Jane Botting of Lutz, Fl., Peter and Domonique DiNapoli of Brockport, Richard and Janet Zoller of Ogdensburg; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She is predeceased by her father.

Lorraine enjoyed playing golf, being outside working in her gardens, and vacationing in Aruba. She also enjoyed many years of league bowling with her friends, but her favorite past time was playing with her beloved grandchildren.

Lorri was also an Auxiliary member of both the Massena Amvets Post 4 and American Legion Post 79.

On August 21, 1968 he Joined the Army serving his country during Vietnam.

Fred is survived by his wife Marsha, children, Frederick Jr. and his wife Brenda of Tonawanda, Andrew and his wife Brenda of Massena, Leesa Brooks of Brier Hill, a brother Ed of Massena, a sister Madge and her husband Harold Johnson of Lisbon, a brother John of Brookdale, a brother Jim and his wife Melinda of Morristown, a sister Thelma and her husband Louie Cutway of Mississippi, a brother Bill of Massena, a brother Tim and his wife Jacqueline of Louisville, a sister Sue Brooks of Ogdensburg, A sister Ellen and her husband Richard Gilbo of Morristown, six grandchildren, Savannah, Christina, Amber, Megan, Cassie and Gabby, several great grandchildren and one great great grandchild on its way. Aaron was born in Manhattan, NY on February 5, 1935 the son of Carl and Catherine Feller. He worked in the garment industry in NYC for 35 years and he also worked as a Corrections officer retiring after 19 years of service.

He is survived by a daughter, JoAnn and her husband Rocky of Poughkeepsie. Aaron was a very hardworking family man, always putting his family first.

Aaron’s daughter would like to thank Rabbi Gold from the Chabad of Plattsburgh for visiting Aaron in the Nursing Home, also a special thanks to everyone at North Country Rehab Nursing Home who took good care of Aaron while he was a resident at the Nursing Home. Luther was born In Chicago, Illinois on April 9, 1939 the son of Luther and Martha Woodrum. He attended Vassar College earning his Bachelor’s degree in physics, but only because he had too many credits in math by the time he got to Vassar. Luther was employed by IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY as a computer programmer.

He is survived by his ex-wife and dear friend, Barbara Woodrum, daughters, Lisa of Highland, NY, and Skye and husband, Gabe Graziani of Ontario, CA. His grandchildren, Helix Graziani, Jeffrey Martell, Steven Martell and Jessica Martell, his sisters Lucille Wells of Arkansas, Lenora Rosinsky of Arkansas, his brothers Lemont of Arkansas, Loren of Chicago and Lance of Chicago.

Luther contributed immensely to the field of computer programming. He secured patents both for himself and IBM on the radix sorting method. He made key contributions to APL (Iverson's A Programming Language) and innovations in the architecture of IBM's System/370 (now called Z series).

Luther knew how to entertain a crowd while singing and dancing at karaoke. He inhaled books, all types, and was a lover of knowledge. Paul was born on Decemeber 9, 1961 in Columbus, Ohio. During his childhood Paul and his family moved often, he enjoyed living in different places, but his fondest memories were that of when he spent time on the farm in Plain City, OH caring for the horses with his siblings. After high school, Paul enlisted in the United States Navy, where he became the Quartermaster of the USS Peterson from 1980-1984. Paul loved his time on that ship, travelling the world and taking in every experience available to him, especially scuba diving every chance he could get. Following his years in the Navy, Paul became a highly skilled carpenter. This love of woodworking stayed with him throughout his life, even as he took on other occupations.

Paul is survived by his wife, Deborah, his daughters Mackenzie (Jake) Ratcliff of Logan, OH, Tina (Nick) Harmon of College Station, Texas, Darcy (Chad) Ashley of Norfolk, NY, Jennifer (Florim) Bajraliu of Sandyhook, CT, his son, Joshua Harding and Adrienne Arnold of Endicott, NY, son-in-law Scott Kelsell of Troy, PA, a sister, Barbara (Ned) Mathias of Bremen, OH, eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and special friends, Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley. He is predeceased by his mother Barbara Summerfield, a daughter Terri Kelsall, sisters Charlotte Sheridan and Terry Gore, a brother Richard Gore, his grandparents Gerald and Charlotte Summerfield.

Paul enjoyed many hobbies through his life, including hockey, karate, off roading in his jeep, and anything to do with nature. Paul often remarked that he was lucky enough to have completed his bucket list. Paul was also an accomplished and persistent wisecracker, much to the delight of his children and family.

Brenda Tharrett was born on January 15, 1953, in Malone, NY, to James F. Wiley and Norma J. Wiley.

Brenda started her career as a housewife. When her children were old enough and off to school, she worked at Sunfeather Herbal Soap Company in Parishville. She later worked cleaning homes and working in various local restaurants where people would often compliment what a good cook she was and that she was quick on her feet. She retired in 2002 after working for SUNY Potsdam as a cleaner.

Brenda married Rodney Tharrett on June 20, 1970, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in North Lawrence, NY .The couple had two children; Brian Tharrett (Nicholville, NY) and Lynn Tharrett (Raymondville, NY). Brenda was best known for being Aunt Nenna. Other than with her own children, spending quality time with her niece Sarah Garrand and nephew Chad Lashomb brought her great joy. Over the years, she built a special relationship with them and their children making memories and baking lots of molasses cookies. She offered them a warm, loving home where they always knew they were loved unconditionally. Theo Garrand, her great nephew, said it best when he described her one day by saying, "Because she is just Aunt Nenna!"

Brenda enjoyed having a coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other. She lived in her family-built "log cabin the woods." Every cedar log was cut and peeled with determination and love. She always had a warm meal in the oven and loved to bake and have sweets in the house. Scary movies, The Big Bang Theory and rock music were her thing (Judas Priest was at the top of her list!). She would often put a CD in the player and enjoy dancing around the house while cleaning. When getting into the car with her, you would have to turn down the loud music that she would have just been rocking out to. In the early morning hours, she enjoyed playing Candy Crush on her tablet.

Brenda is survived by a son, Brian Tharrett of Nicholville; a daughter, Lynn Tharrett of Raymondville, a niece, Sarah (Quinton) Garrand of North Bangor; a nephew, Chad (Deanna) Lashomb of Winthrop; great nephews Theo and Bridger Garrand, David Morse; and great nieces Emmalyn, Ciera, and Skylar Lashomb.

Brenda was predeceased by her beloved father, James F. Wiley (1997) and her loving husband, Rodney (2006).

At her request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. There will be a small, private service held at a later date with close friends and family only.

Memorial donations can be made in Brenda's name to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley.

Obituary Preview: Paul W. Nezezon, 42, of Brasher Falls, passed away unexpectedly November 21, 2022 at home. A celebration of life honoring Paul will be held at Frary Funeral Home in Massena, to be announced at a later date. On June 16, 1980, Richard and Judith (Hoernel) welcomed the birth of their son, Paul William, at Massena Memorial Hospital. Paul attended Twin Rivers Elementary School and was home schooled for the remainder of his school years. He attended SUNY Canton where he majored in Heating and Plumbing.

On February 20, 2020, Paul married the love of his life Jordan Thomas in an intimate ceremony in Massena. Together they built a life of laughter and happiness, caring and supporting each other through their strong faith. Love filled their home, where they resided with their cherished pets, Tucker, Thomas, and Baby. They were each other’s best friends.

As a young man Paul worked for Chip-N-Dale’s Dairy Farm on the North Raquette Road, and at NAPA Auto Parts before his current employment at Alcoa West, where he worked in the Carbon Plant.

Paul is survived by his wife, Jordan, two sons Hayden Nezezon of Albany and Adam (Celsea) Nezezon of Brasher Falls. Paul has two grandchildren, Amelia and Justin, whom he loved dearly. He was so proud to be a grandfather. He is also survived by his father, and three brothers: James, Peter (Brenda), Richard (Kari), nieces Mallory and Zoe, aunt Andrea Masson, all of Massena, and uncles Harry (Maureen) Klages and Bob Hoernel, of Florida. He was immensely loved by his in-laws; mother in-law Robin LaBaff of Potsdam, father in-law Peter (Melissa) Thomas of Waddington, grandfather Ernie LaBaff of Potsdam, sister in-law Nance (Randy) Arquiett of Winthrop, and brother in-law Peter Thomas of Brasher. Uncle Paul was so special to all of their children.

Paul enjoyed boating, camping, hiking in the Adirondacks, shooting guns, and walking in the woods with his wife and their dogs. In his youth he could be found getting into mischief up and down the Raquette River with his three brothers and their dog Fred. Being with family was what made Paul happy. Jordan, his boys, and his grandchildren were his favorite things in life.

Paul’s sense of humor was the perfect combination of dry wit and quirky silliness. His laugh was big, loud, and infectious. He had a warmth that made you feel comfortable and welcome in his presence. Paul will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Cathy was born in Massena, the daughter of the late Lloyd and Beverly (Bombard) Ashley. She graduated from MCHS in 1967 and from the Watertown School of Business in 1968. She began her career as an Administrative Assistant working for Hugh Germanetti at Germanetti & Ryan and held the same position at ALCOA where she retired from in 2000. Following her retirement from ALCOA, she went on to serve as the Deputy Commissioner with the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections for five years.

Cathy had a lot of pride for her hometown and was involved with several community organizations, including the revitalization efforts of downtown Massena and the BPW (Business and Professional Women's Club). She was also once a proud Ambassador for the Massena Chamber of Commerce. Cathy served on the Board of Directors at Rose Hill Rehabilitation in Massena for many years as well as the Massena Memorial Hospital Board of Directors.

Cathy and John R. Marich were united in marriage on November 18, 1993 at the Emmanuel Congregational Church by Rev. Lance Dallaire. John sadly predeceased her on November 24, 2008.

She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Kristina and Patrick "Otis" Francis and her cherished grandsons, Cameron and Carter Monroe, all of Columbia, TN; her dear sisters; Susan Smith (late Stanley Smith), Denise Baxter, Mary Griffith (late Bill Griffith) and Joni (Joseph) Catanzarite along with many nieces and nephews.

She had a special love for her two grandsons and her love for her family was evident in the many family gatherings she hosted in her home where she served her famous meatballs. A social butterfly, she loved spending time with family and friends lighting up the room with her unforgettable laugh and her witty sense of humor.

His impact on countless young people was evident in the number of students who visited him later in life. Gary wore many hats throughout his life; coach, realtor, lifeguard, recreation director, librarian, state department inspector, and was active in Massena Youth Hockey and the vestry at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Gary is survived by his loving family, several nieces and nephews and many cherished friends. Gary was predeceased by his father, Donald, his mother, Georgianna; his brother, Dale; and his sister, Kay.
