Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other organization. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their personality, accomplishments, and charitable donations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication. You can usually find guidelines on their website or by contacting their obituary department directly.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to ensure that their story is told accurately and with dignity. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of a person's passing, while an obituary provides more detailed information about their life and legacy.

The timing of publishing an obituary varies depending on cultural and personal preferences. Typically, it's published within a few days to a week after the death.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to republish an obituary on a anniversary of the person's passing or other significant date, you may need to check with the original publication for permission.

What if I need to make corrections to an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication immediately if you need to make corrections. They will typically work with you to correct the error and republish the revised obituary.
