Obituary Preview: William “Bill” Watts, 86, of Winamac, IN passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Northwest Health Hospital in LaPorte, IN. Bill was born on January 31, 1937 in Royal Center, IN to the late Russell Dale and Genevieve Opal “Jerry” [Reinholt] Watts. On August 5, 1966, he married the love of his life Rosemary Catherine Hawkey. She passed away on January 8, 2015.

Bill worked at Von Tobel’s in Winamac until it closed and then went to work at Broken Arrow Campground in Winamac. He was a former member of the Winamac FOE #2580 and Pulaski County REACT. Bill enjoyed watching NASCAR and going to Shady Hill. He also enjoyed collecting recipes. Bill was a master story teller – especially the one where he roller-skated (with his brother Dick and their friend Bill Murray) from Logansport to Indianapolis to go to the Indy 500.

Bill loved his family very much, especially his great grandchildren, Madysen and Hunter. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He taught welding at El-Tip-Wa and retired in 1989.

Howard had a love of old cars and belonged to the Winamac Old Auto Club for many years. He also loved to play the piano. Howard's family was the pride of his life, and he leaves behind his legacy in all of their lives. He will be greatly missed. Sharon lived in Rockwall, TX for nearly two decades before returning to Winamac in 2020. She was a devoted wife and mother as well as a beloved grandmother. Obituary Preview: Margaret “Peggy” Burzinski, 81, of Arlington Heights, IL passed away at 8:15 AM Friday, October 27, 2023 at her place of residence. She was born on July 19, 1942 in Pulaski County, IN to the late Harry Joseph and Iva Lucile [Degner] Roth. Peggy graduated from Star City High School in 1960 and Ball State University in 1966.

Peggy taught preschool for a number of years before staying home to raise her three children. Later in life, she worked for Chicago Freight Car Leasing until she retired to help care for her grandchildren. She volunteered in her community in many different capacities in order to help others in need, or simply provide them with companionship. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and baking, but most dear to her was her love for her grandchildren.

Peggy held her faith close to her heart, and found solace and strength through her faith in God. Her kindness, patience and love for her family and friends will live on in our hearts forever. Obituary Preview: Linda K. Fritz, 79, of Star City, IN passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac, IN. She was born on March 10, 1944 in Winamac to the late Charles F. and Gladys L. [Bridegroom] Hartwick. Linda graduated from Winamac High School in 1962. On April 26, 1963, she married Kenneth G. Fritz in Winamac.

While working as a teacher’s aide at Winamac High School, Linda decided to pursue a degree in education and become a teacher. Working full time and having a family to care for made this no easy task. Enduring late night drives to Lafayette and summer school, she achieved her goal and received her degree from Purdue University. Linda taught nearly 30 years - first at West Central Elementary school and later at Rensselaer High School.

After retirement, she was a member of the Pulaski County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of the Pulaski Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Winamac High School Alumni Association.

Her children have fond memories of Linda coaching their softball team and helping them with their horses in 4-H. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Phyllis M. Goble-Kruger - October 22, 1936 - October 22, 2023

Obituary Preview: At 7:30 a.m. on October 22, 1936, Phyllis M. Wigner was born and at 7:30 a.m. on October 22, 2023 Phyllis went home to be with Jesus. Born in Yeoman, IN, her childhood was filled with memories of feeling safe and loved. She passed on that love and security to her family and many close to her who adopted her as their mom or grandma.

She met the first love of her life, Bob Goble, on a blind date to Indiana Beach and they were married September 12, 1954. The two were active community members, Phyllis in Iris Elm Garden Club, Happy Homemakers Home-Ec Club and the First Christian Church while supporting Bob’s political and community efforts as well. She also worked outside the home at the Controls factory in Winamac, Miller’s Department Store and as a Driver Examiner and License Branch Manager. Phyllis continued to take writing workshops later in life up to a week before she passed and enjoyed documenting her life story.

In her memoir, she wrote about some of her identities as Carl Metz’s grand-daughter, Bob’s wife, her daughter, Dr. Cherie’s mom, and how she learned that her real identity was truly in Jesus Christ. You saw her faith in her courage, especially after Bob died in 1998, when she traveled solo to Italy where she made life-long friends. A few years ago, Phyllis authored and published a children’s book titled “A Lizard Named Lovely”.

Phyllis was curious, adventuresome, and carefree as a child, traits that those who love her saw throughout her life; especially Devon Kruger, the second love of her life, who she married in 2005. She and Devon enjoyed many trips including seeing the ocean floor at the Bay of Fundy, visiting Tulln Air Base in Austria where Devon was stationed during World War II and wintering in Bradenton, Florida.

Her first memory of gardening was in her grandmother’s garden, planting peas with the tedious task of dropping the pea seeds into the row at exactly the same distance from each other as possible. She carried this love of gardening and nature throughout her life. Phyllis served in various leadership positions of the local Iris Elm Garden Club as well as at the district and state level of Garden Club. She learned, made friends and taught others through gardening, flower arranging and loving God’s beautiful creation. Obituary Preview: Timothy F. “Tim” Hoffa, Jr., 44, of Rogers, AR (formerly of Winamac, IN) passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 16, 2023. He was born on March 20, 1979 in Warren, MI to Timothy F. and Elizabeth E. “Liz” [Szostek] Hoffa, Sr. who were the proud parents of three sons, Gregory, Duane, and Tim, Jr. Sadly, Liz passed away in August of 1982 when Tim was only three. The family relocated to Indiana shortly thereafter. Tragedy struck the Hoffa family again when Gregory passed away in February of 1996. Despite the hardships, Tim persevered. As a teen, he was active in the French Club and played on the Freshman Basketball Team at Pioneer High School in Royal Center, IN. He graduated from Winamac High School in 1997 and attended college for a short time after. On June 29, 2002, he married his soulmate, Christina L. “Christi” Shorter. Their union brought two beautiful children into this world, Madi Liz and Ethan, whom Tim and Christi loved very much. It broke Tim’s heart when Christi passed away on November 20, 2018 after a very hard-fought and courageous battle with Leukemia. One of Tim and Christi’s favorite family activities was camping. He was an avid Michigan Wolverines and Indianapolis Colts fan. Three years ago, Tim moved to Arkansas for a fresh start where he had a good job working at Springfield Sign Co. in Rogers. Tim enjoyed spending time together with his fiancée, Samantha “Sam” Ezell. They loved their daily Starbucks runs, walking trails, and cooking dinner together. Tim and Sam were “lobsters for life”. Sadly, the hardships of life and the pains of this world overwhelmed Tim. He will not be remembered for how he died but rather how he lived and how he loved. He cherished his family, especially his children. He was a good friend to many and was kind to all. Rest easy Tim, we will take it from here. Obituary Preview: Ernestine “Tina” [Mejia] Tetzloff, 90, of Winamac, IN, passed away at 5:05 p.m. Friday, October 6, 2023, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. She was born August 28, 1933, in Los Herreras, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, to Juan and Irene [Salinas] Mejia.

Tina married George Tetzloff on August 11, 1955, in Monterrey, Mexico. They shared 52 wonderful years together. They had three boys. Her favorite times were spent with her family, including Bunco, competitive card games, and board games. She attended ball games, shows, graduations, and special occasions, and enjoyed traveling to visit her family. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Tina was a retired farmer who did not hesitate to drive a tractor, combine, or farm equipment. She was also a proud homemaker who was known for her gardening, baking, painting, and woodwork. She spent countless hours in her gardens tending to flowers, fruits, and vegetables. She was famous for her sugar cookies, pies, Mexican wedding cakes, and Mexican foods. Her paintings were varied but she gravitated toward barns and winter scenes. Tina was a Pulaski County REACT Team charter member and served for 30 years. She attended the Star City Community Church. She was always willing to help other people and never hesitated to extend a helping hand to friends, neighbors, and strangers. Obituary Preview: David Russell Broad, 70, of Winamac passed peacefully into his Savior's arms on October 5, 2023 at Hickory Creek. Over the years Dave had worked at a fertilizer plant, a funeral home, and a factory as well as for Pulaski County EMS and Pulaski Memorial Hospital. He touched many lives through numerous ministry opportunities. Dave will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include: his wife, Tamela of Winamac, son, Thomas Broad of Cincinnati, Ohio; son, Timothy (Janice) Broad of Georgetown, TX; and daughter, Tasha (Daniel) Knowlton of Fremont, IN. He was blessed with 14 Grandchildren (all surviving) and treasured being a Grandfather to each. He is also survived by his sister, Deb (Don) Nedza of Indianapolis, IN. There are various cousins, neices, nephews remaining as well.

The family will host a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, October 14, 2023 with time to greet family members from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Location of service is Church of Christ at Logansport 2347 Burlington Avenue in Logansport.

Nenita was a devoted member of the Roman Catholic faith. She enjoyed cooking and get-togethers with her Pinoy friends. Nenita was deeply loved by her family and friends. He married Mary Beth Comer on March 5, 1972 in Lafayette, IN. Mary passed away on September 11, 2002.

Bill was a talented diesel mechanic, having worked at Patton Tractor in Hammond, IN as well as at Fair Oaks Farms and Bos Dairy both in Fair Oaks, IN. Throughout his life, he enjoyed the outdoors and working on cars. Most of all, Bill loved his family very much, especially spending time with his grandchildren. Obituary Preview: Betty Louise [Reutebuch] DeSabatine, 90 of Winamac, IN went to be with the loves of her life, the Lord and her husband “Pauly”, on September 22, 2023 in Winamac. Betty was born at home in Pulaski, IN to the late John and Cora [Link] Reutebuch on October 20, 1932. She was the fifth child in a family of thirteen. Betty graduated from Pulaski High School. On October 20, 1951, she married Paul “Rusty” DeSabatine at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pulaski. Rusty passed away on April 18, 2017.

Betty worked from the early age of 10 babysitting and cleaning for a couple of her schoolteachers. She also did ironing for an aunt. Betty worked in a sewing factory after graduating from high school. She was the bookkeeper for 65 years for Rusty’s excavating business “DeSabatine Brothers Excavating”. While helping with the family business she had nine children in ten years and did a wonderful job raising them.

Betty was very active at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Winamac where she was a CCD teacher for many years. She was also a member of the Christian Mothers and Ladies of Charity. Betty was proud to be a part of the first group of parishioners allowed to distribute the Eucharist at St. Peter’s.

Aside from raising her family, Betty loved to work in her garden, read, cook for her family, play Euchre on Friday nights, and watch her family swim in her pool. A day did not go by without her watching her favorites on TV, The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy. She was born on April 29, 1950 in Winamac to the late Charles R. and Violet L. [Marchand] Disinger. Janet grew up in the country near Francesville and graduated from West Central High School in 1969. On September 28, 1972, she married Robert E. Graham. Bob passed away on February 10, 2018.

Janet was a lifelong cosmetologist until her health no longer allowed her to work. She was the owner of Jan’s Cut and Curl and also worked at Headlines for many years. Janet was also a longtime bus driver for the Eastern Pulaski Schools and Pulaski County Human Services. She also worked as a teacher’s aide Eastern Pulaski Elementary School for several years.

Janet was a member of Pleasant Ridge Bible Church in rural Francesville. She enjoyed the company of other people, trips to Walmart, and spending time with her family. Janet will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Susan Jane Alexander - May 22, 1957 - August 21, 2023

Obituary Preview: Sue Alexander, 66, of Winamac, IN passed away on the morning of Monday, August 21, 2023, in the home she made together with her husband of 45 years, Tim Alexander.

She was known by many names – Sue, Suzy, Suzy Q, Susan Jane, Saint Sue, Grandma, MawMaw and Mom – but she was born Susan Jane Hoffman on May 22nd, 1957. The daughter of Jim and Patty [Degner] Hoffman, she grew up on a farm along the Tippecanoe River south of Pulaski, IN. She liked farm life, but she loved being around people more. Sue made friends easily and joined every club and sport she could, from 4H to Sunshine Society to playing forward on Winamac’s first girls’ basketball team. She fell in love with her high school sweetheart, Tim Alexander, at the age of 16, and they were inseparable for the rest of their lives.

Sue attended Purdue University, graduating with a degree in Farm Business Management in 1979. Together, she and Tim returned to Winamac to start their own farm and family. Throughout the 1980s, they raised three children and managed a growing hog operation and grain farm. Sue worked as a Farm Loan Officer at First Union Bank and held various positions at CFS and Eastern Pulaski schools before getting her real estate license and working as a real estate agent for Davis Select Realty, a career she loved and held for over 20 years.

In 1993, a fall from a farming accident broke Tim’s spinal cord, leaving him a quadriplegic unable to move from the shoulders down. The couple had three children at the time: Megan (13), Jim (10) and Mark (4). The divorce rate following a spinal cord injury is three times higher than the average population due to the immense physical, emotional and mental strain of such a complicated disability, but the couple persevered and thrived, growing their family and their farm. For much of the 30 years since his injury, Sue was Tim’s primary caregiver, modeling unconditional love and sacrifice to all who knew her.

In 2006, Sue was awarded the first-ever Purdue University Women in Agriculture Achievement Award presented by the Purdue Women in Agriculture Team and Indiana AgriNews to honor women who work tirelessly to contribute to entrepreneurial agriculture in Indiana.

Sue’s life was dedicated to serving others – her family, her friends, her clients and her community – usually in quiet and anonymous ways. She served as a Board Member of the Pulaski County Community Foundation, the FSA County Committee and as a volunteer for the Pulaski Animal Center (PAC). She loved her dogs, her horses, and any of God’s creatures – except for mice. She was terrified of mice.

Most of all, she loved her family, especially her husband of 45 years, her three children and their spouses, and her eight grandchildren. Family meant everything to her, and she meant everything to them, and while there wasn’t enough time, there was more than enough love. Obituary Preview: Sandy Arnett Craig, 62, of Winamac, IN went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. She passed away at Northwest Health Hospital in LaPorte, IN. Sandy was born on December 28, 1960 in South Bend, IN to J.B. and Kathleen Collins Arnett. She was raised in North Judson, IN and graduated from NJSP High School in 1979. On April 30, 1988, Sandy married Steve Craig in Winamac. He survives.

Sandy worked at Eaton’s for many years until they closed. She retired from Dr. Heinsen’s office where she had worked as a medical clerk. Sandy was a member of the Winamac FOE #2580. She was also a member of Church of the Heartland.

Sandy loved her family dearly. She especially cherished spending time with her grandsons, Casen and Kammy as well as talking on the phone with her grandson, Chance. Sandy was Casen’s number one fan at the ballpark. She enjoyed shopping, getting her hair done, and tanning (thanks Gerry Jo!). Sandy liked going to church and riding in the golf cart with Steve and their dog, Spud.
