Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to share the news of a person's passing with others, providing essential details about their life and legacy. It also serves as a way to honor and celebrate the deceased person's life, sharing their achievements, interests, and personality traits with those who knew them.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and be able to convey their personality and accomplishments in a concise and respectful manner.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about memorial services, charitable donations, or other ways to pay tribute to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are often limited to 100-200 words, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-250 words, but ultimately the length will depend on the individual's life story and the writer's goals.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life, including their accomplishments, relationships, and personality traits.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is possible to write your own obituary. In fact, some people choose to do so as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and authentically. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you will typically need to contact the paper's obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on word count, formatting, and submission deadlines. Be prepared to provide proof of death, such as a death certificate or funeral home documentation.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms where you can publish an obituary. These may include funeral home websites, online obituary databases, social media sites, or personal blogs. Online obituaries can reach a wider audience and remain accessible for years to come.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Newspaper obituaries can range from $50 to $500 or more, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options. Funeral homes may also offer package deals that include obituary publication.

What is a memorial website?

Can I include photos in an obituary?
