Edward Felix Chadez - March 06, 1924 - January 16, 2024

Departed: 01/16/2024 (Homedalw)
Obituary Preview: Edward Felix Chadez, a lifelong Homedale resident, died at his home on January 16, 2024, within a mile of where he was born. He was just shy of his 100th birthday. Dad was born March 6, 1924, on the farm that his parents homesteaded. Growing up on a farm during the depression, he developed a strong work ethic and frugality that guided him throughout his life. He attended Homedale schools, and like many in his generation, walked miles to school. In high school, he participated in baseball, track, and basketball (his favorite). He spearheaded a drive to bring school dances to Homedale High, (quite a feat at the time), and he often regaled us with stories of pranks he played!
Dad met the love of his life, Helen Schuler, at a Knights of Columbus dance. They were married on December 29, 1948 and were inseparable for over 72 years. Together they bought farms in Homedale where they raised a family of seven children, grew crops, and milked dairy cows. Dad was a lifelong learner, and though he never went to college, he was one of the smartest men we knew. He always had a balance of embracing new technology, while holding tight to tradition and strong morals. And he could tease like the best of them, which he did until his dying day. Dad and Mom were avid enthusiasts of education, so there was never a question of “if” we were going to college, but where. They started the dairy farm to support our education and were very proud that all 7 children graduated from college. Dad was one of the first farmers in the area to install cement ditches. He also served on the Caldwell branch of the Federal Land Bank for numerous years, helping other farmers finance their dreams.
Dad’s greatest joys in life were working long hard days in the fields and special moments with his family. He finally retired from farming at the age of 97, but never from being the best dad ever! He was an amazing man and loving father, and we will miss his wit and wisdom. He cherished every one of his 11 grandchildren, and they adored him. He lost the love of his life, Helen, on August 19, 2021. He is preceded in death by 5 siblings: John, Mary, Dorothy, Florence, and Ted; son-in-law, Gary Whitney, and great granddaughter, Helen Young. He is survived by his seven children: Susan (Craig) Hartley, Trish Chadez Whitney, Charles Chadez, Louise (Dave McRae) Chadez, Mary (Greg Sanders) Chadez, Perry (Connie) Chadez; Rita (Bernie) Ball and three sisters-in-law: Dorothy Vauk, Sister Chanelle Schuler and Lesta Chadez. He is also survived by his eleven grandchildren: Scott Hartley, Anna Hartley-Simon, Cari Whitney McCurdy, Kristin Delmare, Braden and Eileen McRae, Justin Bilbrey, Chris, Eric and Jeni Ball, and Michelle Young, and thirteen great grandchildren.

Jill Dian Berry - October 21, 1938 - August 21, 2023

Departed: 08/21/2023 (Homedalw)
Obituary Preview: Jill was born in Sturgis Michigan to Dale and Dorothy Grossman. She graduated from Centreville High School. After spending time in Washington DC as a teletype operator for Capitol Airlines, she returned to Centreville. She met Roger Berry from Constantine at a Halloween party and they were married August 6th, 1960. She and Roger raised their 3 daughters on Big Fish Lake, Sturgis. After retirement, she and Roger spent several years traveling the US in their RV, then settled in Idaho with their youngest daughter and her family. Jill was extremely creative and artistic. She spent hours sewing doll and Barbie clothes, along with matching outfits for her daughters. Many prom and formal dresses were created from pictures brought to her from catalogs. There were always homemade ornaments for both Christmas and Easter egg trees. She built several dollhouses for daughters and granddaughters along with a miniature horse ranch, play kitchens, doll furniture and campers. Much time was spent at Christmas with music blaring on the “record player” while cookies were being baked, taffy was being pulled, marshmallow square houses were being built, craft projects were being made, and a general mess of the house was going on. She always managed to laugh at the frosting or taffy that ended up on the kitchen ceiling from those sessions!
She was an avid sports buff and could always be counted on when you needed an answer for sports trivia. No matter what, she always looked forward to the start of football season and could remember coaches and players from all the Michigan teams. Jill started and coached her youngest daughter on the first all-girls Little League team in Centreville, designing and making uniform shirts. She never missed any of her daughters’ sporting events and could always be found in the stands supporting their teams.
Jill was known as “Mom Berry” to many of her daughters’ friends. All were made to feel welcome at the Lake, and enjoyed her homemade pizza, fried zucchini and onion rings, as well as doughnuts as fast as she could make them.
Jill was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roger, her daughter Romaine, and her brother Jan Grossman. She is survived by her sister Sue Scott, daughters Johnna (Gary) Harlan, Rebecca (Jeff) Wasson, son Brian (Tami) Mayer; Granddaughters Anika (Jackson) Draime, Teah Mayer, Montana Wasson, Fallon Wasson; great-grandchildren Bentley and Navy Draime; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Grandma Jilly, your girls are sending up lots of love, as well as an unlimited supply of Pizza Sandwiches, White Cheddar Cheezits and Diet Dr Pepper! And we know that Heaven will never run out of pens for you. XOXOXOXO
Per Jill’s wishes, she will be cremated and brought home to Michigan. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Romona Edith Andrus - February 12, 1933 - August 06, 2023

Departed: 08/06/2023 (Homedalw)
Obituary Preview: It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Romona “Mona” Andrus. Romona slipped away peacefully on Sunday, August 6th , at the age of 90 years, with family by her side and in the comfort of her home in Wilder.
Romona was born in February of 1933, in Lorretta, Nebraska, to Edith and Herman Cook. She was the youngest sibling of Zetha and Lester. She spent her early years in Loretto, Nebraska, attending primary school and graduating the 10th grade. She met and married Alonzo “Joe” Vanosdall and they moved to Mountain Home, Idaho in 1964. They moved to and settled in Wilder in 1968, where they made a home and farmed on 33 acres. She loved gardening and canning her fruits and vegetables; baking treats and pies to share with others; fishing and relaxing at the river; and tending to her collection of wild birds (Peacocks, Guinea hens, and chickens). She made sure to teach these skills to her children and grandchildren. In addition to her being a homemaker, farmer, and mother, she spent a decade working at the Pantorium Dry Cleaners in Caldwell and 32 years at Flahiff’s Funeral Chapel, in Homedale, ensuring loved ones received the respect and attention to detail they deserved in their time of need.
In 1978, Romona was remarried to Keith Fearn and with the marriage she gained three sons and a daughter that she loved as if they had been with her from day one. Her and Keith spent many happy years enjoying family and taking trips together, such as going to Winnemucca, Lake Lowell, and the Meridian Speedway. Together they owned and operated the Farmer’s Inn in Homedale for 10 years enjoying the connection to the community and making many friends, until they retired.
After Keith passed away in 1992, Romona was happy to spend her time with family and volunteering at the Senior Citizens Center, until she met and was wooed by the lovable and charming Edwin Andrus, they married in 1995. Ed was a fantastic addition to the family and Romona loved her time with him. She particularly enjoyed going to dinner shows and the long country drives with him until his passing in 2001.
She was a very loving mother that raised 9 children: Clifford Vanosdall of Emmett, Idaho (Judy), Duane Vanosdall, Lyle Vanosdall of Wilder, Idaho (Kathryn), Janece Fretwell of Jordan Valley, Oregon (Denny), Lonnie Vanosdall of Marsing, Idaho, Naomi Brown of Wilder, Idaho (Morris), Lola Hamrick of Emmett, Idaho (Kevin), Joe Jr Vanosdall, and Jack Nelson of Lynnfield, Massachusetts (Hillary). Romona was the absolute proudest grandmother of 21 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Romona was instinctually a protector and provider. She was fiercely protective of the children. She would go out of her way to help anyone that needed it, particularly later in life she made sure that the elderly in town always had a ride to their appointments and to “town” to get medicine, etc. She ignored the fact that she WAS an elderly, because the others needed help. She was the most unselfish person and she was happiest when helping others.
One of her most enduring legacies will be her passion and gift for quilting. She made every one of us a quilt; EVERY one, to include the 79 grandkids, some of us more than one. She taught many in the family to quilt, to include extended family, so her legacy lives on. She dedicated many hours of detailed work to make quilts for the Senior Citizens Center to raffle off as a fund raising device. Single handedly bringing thousands of dollars over the years.
Romona is survived by her sister Zetha Estes; children; son, Lyle Vanosdall (Kathryn); daughters, Janece Fretwell (Denny), Naomi Brown (Morris), and Lola Hamrick (Kevin); sons Kenneth Fearn, Keith Fearn (Shari), Ted Fearn (Beverly) and Jack Nelson (Hillary). She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a legacy of loving and caring for them all.
Romona was preceded in death by her parents, Edith and Herman Cook; brother, Lester Cook (Anon); husbands; Edwin Andrus, Keith Fearn, and Alonzo Joe Vanosdall; sons, Duane Vanosdall, Joe Jr. Vanosdall, Clifford Vanosdall (Judy), and Lonnie Vanosdall; daughter, Darlene Stites; grandson, Daniel Vanosdall, and great-grandson Noah Brown.
Family and Friends are invited to the pay respects on Friday, Aug 18, 2023, from 5:00-8:00 pm at Flahiff’s Funeral Chapel in Homedale.
The Funeral service will be on Saturday, Aug 19, 2023 at 11:00 am at Flahiff’s. After the service there will be a reception at the Homedale Senior Citizens Center for all family and friends. Alice Knight Levanger - July 21, 1935 - May 06, 2023

Departed: 05/06/2023 (Homedalw)
Obituary Preview: Alice Knight Levanger, 87, of Hailey Idaho, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2023 after an unexpected illness.
The first of five children, Alice was born on July 21, 1935 to the late Orville and Devona Knight in Mesquite, Nevada. She moved with her family to Idaho when she was 8 years old, settling in the Kuna area and remained there until she moved to Homedale in 1949, where she graduated from high school in 1953. It was there she met the love of her life J. Clark Levanger, and they were married on June 8, 1953, a union that was to last for 70 years. Together they raised 3 children and traveled the world as a military family.
Alice quickly adapted to the military lifestyle, effortlessly transitioning from “small town girl” to becoming an excellent role model for many incoming spouses and employees during her 28 years as a military wife and 18 years in the business world. She proudly supported her husband’s career, seamlessly adjusting to whatever role was required. She was strong, independent, poised, a well-seasoned traveler, often making the journey alone with 3 children to whatever duty station her family was called to. To avoid the empty nest, she became a realtor and was very successful in this endeavor. Alice had a flair for decorating, and it was evident in the warm, inviting environment she created in each of her 28 homes over the years. A self-taught gourmet cook, Alice had phenomenal entertaining skills and enjoyed planning and hosting dinner parties for both business and pleasure. However, she most loved when her family and friends would come to visit, allowing her to spoil them with excellent meals and warm hospitality. She especially enjoyed being able to use her White House access and treat them to a tour while stationed in Washington D.C.
After retirement, Alice and Clark traveled all of the United States as well as the Canadian providences in their RV before establishing a permanent residence in Hailey, Idaho. At this time Alice proclaimed that her 29th home would be at the Cemetery in Homedale, her way of saying no more moving. Alice loved her home in Hailey, the snow not so much, watching the birds arrive and the flowers bloom. A devoted wife and mother, Alice touched the lives of many and will forever be remembered for her kind and compassionate spirit, robust laugh, and sweet and loving smile.
Left to cherish her precious memory are her husband Clark, her sons John (Tammy) Levanger of Homedale, ID, and Jeffrey Levanger of Scottsdale, AZ, her daughter Jennifer Levanger of Hailey, ID and “stepson” Steve McCoy of Hailey. She also leaves her brother, Ray Knight of Pasco, WA, 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. She will be greatly missed by her faithful and protective grand puppy, JJ.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who wish to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also assist with writing and publishing the obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable achievements or accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the person who has passed.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with payment information and any required documentation.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure their legacy is told in their own words. This can be a thoughtful gesture for your loved ones and help reduce their burden during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also a celebration of the person's life. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help capture their personality and spirit.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers often have specific deadlines for submission and publication, while online platforms may publish immediately or within a few hours.

Can I make corrections to an already-published obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform directly to request corrections. They will typically work with you to make necessary changes.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

In some cases, families may prefer not to publicly announce the passing of a loved one. Private obituaries can be shared with immediate family and friends through email or private online platforms.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and other resources.

Can I republish an old obituary on social media or online platforms?

If you're sharing an old obituary on social media or online platforms, be sure to respect copyright laws and obtain permission from the original publisher if necessary. You may also want to consider reaching out to family members or descendants for their input.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and additional features such as photos or online memorials. Expect costs to range from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page instead of an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages and tribute websites allow you to create a personalized space to share memories, photos, and stories about your loved one. These can be especially helpful for those who cannot attend funeral services in person.

How do I handle condolences and messages from strangers after publishing an obituary?

If you're receiving condolences from strangers after publishing an obituary, it's generally best to respond graciously and acknowledge their kind words. You may also want to set boundaries around responding to messages if they become overwhelming.

Can I include quotes, poems, or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or lyrics can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose pieces that resonate with the person's life, interests, or values.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?
