Drexel Howard Riley - June 27, 1933 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Stockdale)
Obituary Preview: Pioneering theatre producer, Drexel Riley, passes at 90.
Drexel Howard Riley, influential theatrical producer, director, actor and playwright who founded the national touring company Repertory Theatre of America, died April 10. Riley is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jacqueline Salmon Riley, native of Stockdale, who served as business manager for the theatre for many years. The Rileys have two sons, Ty Salmon Riley (Cheri) and Guy Drexel Riley and two grandsons, Chase Salmon Riley and
Connor Principe Riley. Riley created a professional theatre company that would make great stage works accessible to
small and remote towns and non-traditional spaces across America for over thirty years. In 1967, the Texas native took ownership of the respected Bishop’s Company in North Hollywood, California where famed actor/playwright Sam Shepard got his start as a young
touring artist. Riley created an operating model with three touring units carrying a repertory of three plays on ten-month annual itineraries across the U.S. and Canada. He branded his young
touring troupe Alpha-Omega Players and his production company Repertory Theatre of America based on its national scope. In 1969, Riley moved the company headquarters to Dallas where he had been a member of the legendary Paul Baker’s original acting company at the Dallas Theater Center in the 1950s and ’60’s. The mid-continent location gave RTA extended reach and impact. With a group of his Los Angeles actors and a fresh influx of Dallas-based stage artists, Repertory Theatre of America began to establish itself nationally in the arts council, college and dinner theatre markets. Employing a varied repertory of new works, commercial comedies and ambitious dramatic literature, RTA partnered with countless community institutions to build
theatre audiences from the ground up. Countless Americans saw their first play performed by an RTA troupe between 1967 and 1999. The company traveled with simple portable lighting, sound and scenery but routinely transformed non-traditional spaces like gymnasiums, student centers, civic clubs - and even cemeteries and prisons - into magical theatres. This was also a rich period for theatre-in-the- church in the U.S. and RTA presented plays like A Man for All Seasons, Saint Joan, Becket, Luther and Waiting for Godot in church settings. An avid fisherman, Riley eventually moved the company’s booking and rehearsal facilities down to the idyllic Texas Gulf Coast arts village,
Rockport, in 1974. Over a thirty-two year period, the company presented over 8,000 performances and employed hundreds of actors, theatrical designers, technicians and booking managers, including notable
theatre veterans like regional theatre producer/director Paul Pierce and Broadway actor Jeff Still. “Everything important that I know about running theatres I learned from Drexel Riley,” Pierce said. “Drexel was always the most inspired and prepared person in the room. But he was also the one having the most fun. I learned from Drexel to lead from the front and to always bring big hairy audacious ideas into the rehearsal hall. The joy, humor and courage he displayed every day assured all of us young actors that hard work and kindness would inevitably add up to a hit show.” Until his recent retirement, Pierce was the award-winning producing artistic director of
the State Theatre of Georgia, the Springer Opera House, for 35 years.
“Drexel Riley gave me my first real acting job over 40 years ago, in 1983,” says Jeff Still. “It’s 2024 now and I’ve never stopped. Drexel was, quite simply the best boss a guy - or any actor - ever had. His role in my life kick-started my career, a ride that has seen me appear in film and television but more importantly in theatre all over the country including eight shows on Broadway and seven Off-Broadway. Much of what I am now I owe to RTA/AOP and therefore much of what my life has become I owe to Drexel. Without him there at the start, my life would
have been very different. He has always had a big place in my heart. And I’m just one person. Imagine the scores of other people who can say the same thing. What a legacy! If I want to look at a life well-lived, a life of influence, care and importance, I would look no further than Drexel H. Riley.”
Drexel H. Riley was born in Floresville, Texas June 27, 1933. The next-to-youngest of eleven children, he attended Gregory High School in Gregory, Texas and then became the first of his family to attend college. He received a B.A. in Drama at Southwestern University and a M.A. in Theatre from Baylor University. Riley did graduate work in Theology at Southern Methodist University and attended Austin Presbyterian Seminary. Unsurprisingly, he always regarded the theatre profession as a service to humankind. That was at the heart of the company culture he created and it affected everyone who ever worked for him. After artistic director Paul Baker established the Dallas Theater Center operations in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed theatre, he invited Drexel Riley to join his inaugural resident acting company. Under Baker, Riley performed in Hamlet, The Rivals, The Mad Woman of Chaillot, Julius Caesar, A Place on the Magdalena Flats and an acclaimed stage adaptation of Faulkner’s novel, “As I Lay Dying” called Journey to Jefferson, which enjoyed an extended European tour in 1964. Baker also directed Riley’s original playscript, The Cotton Pick, a semi-autobiographical reflection of his early hardscrabble rural youth. At DTC, Riley performed with Burl Ives and Burgess Meredith and collaborated with playwright Preston Jones, author of the acclaimed The
Texas Trilogy.

Deacon Benjamin Gimenez - August 19, 1939 - January 25, 2024

Departed: 01/25/2024 (Stockdale)
Obituary Preview: Deacon Benjamin Gimenez Jr., 84, formerly of Stockdale, Texas passed away peacefully on January 25, 2024, in Sanger, Texas. Benjamin was born on August 19, 1939, in Stockdale, Texas to Benjamin Gimenez Sr. and Pauline (Quintanilla) Gimenez. Benjamin met his wife to be, Pauline Soto, at a dance that she had attended with her brother. She wasn’t even allowed to have a boyfriend. That night, her brother eloped with his girlfriend and Benjamin decided to elope with Pauline as well. He stole Pauline quickly; he was a man who didn’t beat around the bush. He told it like it was. He always said, “Say what you mean and mean what you say.” When he was in the hospital, the doctors told him he was going to leave the hospital better than he was before. When he would be back in the hospital, he would tell the doctors, “You keep saying that I’m going to be better and here I am back again.” They would ask him why he was back in the hospital, and he would tell them, “Well don’t you know? You’re the doctor, you tell me what the problem is.”
Benjamin was so proud of September 16, 2001, for this was the date he was ordained as a Deacon of the Catholic Church. He spread the gospel to everyone he met. And sometimes they liked it and sometimes they didn’t. If they didn’t like it, he would just say, “Okay, and God bless you”. He was doing what he was called to do by God. Benjamin was a character. When he was happy, you knew it. When he was angry, you knew it. When he wanted something done, he wanted it done now. Just about everyone he met fell in love with him, he was so loved by his friends and family.
Benjamin is survived by his son, Mike Jimenez (Belinda); daughters, Cynthia De La Garza (Edward), Rachel Leyva (Mario Jr.), Magdalena Bercerra; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brother, Albert Jimenez; sister, Josephine Garza; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

John Thomas Person - August 18, 1932 - September 15, 2023

Departed: 09/15/2023 (Stockdale)
Obituary Preview: John Thomas Person, 91, beloved husband of Bernice Hutton Person, entered Heaven on September 15, 2023 in Kerrville.
John Tom, as he was known to his friends and family, was the son of Everett Edward Person and Vera Chappell Person. He was born in Stockdale on August 18, 1932. Just two years after losing his loving mother to leukemia, John Tom graduated from Stockdale High School in 1949. He followed his grandfather John Harvey Chappell (Baylor University, Class of 1905) to Baylor University where he studied chemistry. His studies were cut short in 1953 when he was drafted during the Korean War. He married Bernice, and they moved to El Paso where he served in an administrative role at Fort Bliss. He was honorably discharged in 1955 and returned to Waco where he completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chemistry. After graduation, John Tom and Bernice settled in Houston where he worked for Drill-Chem as their head of research. Over several years, Drill-Chem evolved into Cumberland Chemical where he became an equity partner. During his time at Cumberland, he oversaw work across chemical plants in Texas, Mexico, El Salvador, and Ecuador and secured several patents related to herbicides and cotton defoliants.
John Tom’s diverse interests ranged from sports (as an avid tennis player and golfer) to music (as a devotee of eclectic styles—Gilbert & Sullivan, Golden Age showtunes, and Gary P. Nunn) to gardening (as a chemist who kept detailed journals documenting his planting pursuits). But the pinnacle of his interest centered on his beloved Baylor Bears. A dedicated fan in good seasons and bad, John Tom held the unique privilege of attending the last football game at the Waco Municipal Stadium, the first and final football games in Floyd Casey Stadium, and the first football game at McLane Stadium.
His most valued role was that of “Granddaddy” to his six granddaughters. In the early years, John Tom was known to rush from the sanctuary after church on Sunday mornings to be the first to arrive at the nursery to pick up his granddaughters from Sunday School. As “the girls” grew and their milestones evolved from dance recitals and school events to graduations, weddings, and the births of their own children, his presence was a constant. He always showed up—a practice he instilled in his family. In recent years, he inherited an additional title, “Mommy’s Granddaddy,” as his granddaughters welcomed children of their own.
Even though he lived away from Stockdale, he always remained close. He was active in agriculture (peanut farming) and running cattle with his brother. They spent many years between their two places tending to cattle and repairing fences. He would often reminisce about spending time with his own grandparents and extended Chappell family on Cibolo Creek.
Whether in Houston, Stockdale, or Kerrville, John and Bernice’s home was a haven to friends and family—a place of faith and fellowship for all who were blessed to know them. Over the years, their influence was significant across the various formal and informal communities they served—the “49ers” (their high school classmates who gathered regularly until recent years), their church communities (Garden Oaks Baptist Church in Houston where John served as a Deacon for many years; First Baptist Church of Stockdale; and Trinity Baptist Church of Kerrville), and even the assisted living center (Brookdale Assisted Living, Kerrville) where John spent the final months of his life. His final weeks were busy with an almost constant stream of visitors paying their respects to the reserved man who offered unreserved love and generosity to so many. In addition to grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was visited by numerous extended family including treasured cousins, nieces and nephews and their families, and even college friends of his children—a testament of his impact and legacy.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Bernice; his three children, Nancy Person Moran (Bobby), John Steven Person (Diana), and Kathy Suzanne Person; his six granddaughters, Meredith Moran Bernsen (Cade), Jordan Person Kenna (Greg), Erin Person Garcia (Adam), Mandi Moran Sprayberry (Ryan), Klare Moran Tucker (Colton), and Hutton Elise Person; as well as his eight great-grandchildren, Clara Channing Bernsen, Chappell Anne Bernsen, Whitley Ray Sprayberry, Everett Person Kenna, David Hutton Bernsen, John Grady Sprayberry, Adaline Jean Tucker, and Harper Diana Kenna. He is preceded in death by his younger brother James Edward Person and two great-grandsons, Doak and Bexar Sprayberry.
A visitation and memorial service will take place at First Baptist Church, Stockdale. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. culminating in the burial at Stockdale Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Cade Bernsen, Greg Kenna, Adam Garcia, Ryan Sprayberry, Colton Tucker, Ryne Hutton, and Hayes Hutton. Honorary pallbearers are Bart Hutton and Brad Hutton.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Brookdale Assisted Living and Alamo Hospice for their loving care and support.
