Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the funeral home or a family member, often with the assistance of a professional writer or obituary template. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise and meaningful summary of the person's life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable achievements, awards, or charitable work.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and provide a visual representation of the person being remembered.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

What if I'm not comfortable writing about myself?

If you're not comfortable writing your own obituary, consider asking a trusted friend or family member to help. Alternatively, many funeral homes and online platforms offer writing services or templates to guide you through the process.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person being remembered. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate their life and make the notice more engaging and memorable.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?
