Francisco Santiago Deras Soltis - October 19, 1959 - June 04, 2024

Departed: 06/04/2024 (Houston)
Obituary Preview: October 19, 1959 - June 4, 2024
Francisco Santiago Deras Soltis, 64, was born on October 19, 1959 in San Salvador, El Salvador and grew up in Copapayo, Cuscatlán, El Salvador, one of two children of the late Maria Benita Deras Solórzano. He always considered his beloved aunt, the late Virginia Deras, as his second mother as she helped raise him, along with his beloved late grandparents Pedro Deras y Adriana Solórzano de Deras whom he grew up with in his early years. Francisco is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years - Mary Anne Deras Soltis, his 5 children: Sandra Elizabeth Perez, Tanya Yanira Perez, Alexander Enrique Perez, Sinddy Adriana Lopez and Anthony Santiago Deras Soltis and his 2 grandchildren Adriana Sophia Perez and Heidi Alexandra Perez, along with his brother Leonel Adalberto Deras.
Although he did not have any sisters by blood, he considered many people to be his sisters in spirit, most especially his cousins Silvia Lorena Deras Delgado and Maria Eugenia Hernandez Delgado and his beloved friend Luz Marina Padilla. Teodoro Aguiluz was also his brother in spirit. He is also survived by his father and mother-in-law James and Mary Ann Soltis whom he loved dearly; his brothers and sisters-in-law; and brothers and sisters in-spirit, especially those who worked on behalf of the Salvadoran community here and in El Salvador; countless cousins, many nephews and nieces, and many people he considered to be his cousins, nephews and nieces even if they were not related by blood.
Francisco - also known by many as Santiago, Santy, Pancho, Chino, and Chico - spent his life helping the poor, the immigrant, the marginalized and the oppressed.  After serving in the army in El Salvador from age 15-17, Francisco came to see the injustice in his country and began his advocacy on behalf of the oppressed, leading him to travel the treacherous immigrant route to begin his life in the United States at the age of 20. While raising three young children, he worked many jobs while volunteering and eventually working for various advocacy and non-profit organizations including Casa El Salvador, CRECEN, GANO-CARECEN and RENACE, among others. He served as the first Salvadoran and day labor site coordinator in Houston. He served in many capacities from coordinator to educator, labor organizer to case worker for a variety of non-profits and community service organizations over the past 30 years including ESCAPE Family Resource Center, Catholic Charities, Interfaith Ministries, the American Federation of Teachers, Southwest Key, Hope Disaster Recovery and finally Neighborhood Centers/Baker Ripley where he spent much of the last two decades.  He served populations including day laborers, refugees, immigrants, detained minor immigrant children, paraprofessionals and school service employees, people affected by natural disasters and, most recently veterans at risk of becoming homeless. Beginning in 1994 and into the 2000s, he organized annual delegations to El Salvador to help the participants - primarily comprised of young Jesuit Volunteers - to learn about the complexities of Salvadoran life during and after the civil war.  It was on one of these trips that he met Mary Anne, the woman who would become his wife, and after dating for 7 years they wed in 2003.  He then transitioned from taking delegations to El Salvador to organizing an annual Mother’s Day event for mothers who lost children during the civil war.
Francisco would do anything he could to help anyone, no matter the distance, time or expense. He loved to make people laugh and always had a positive outlook no matter what life threw his way. He enjoyed singing along with his favorite songs in Spanish, usually to his own tune and beat. He loved his wife, his brother and each of his children and grandchildren very much and cared deeply about the well-being of his immediate and extended family.
His passion was fighting injustice and advocating for the rights of those on the margins of society. In addition, he showered his love and attention on the elders of society through an initiative called “Semillas de Esperanza,” or Seeds of Hope.  He cared deeply about Salvadoran society and politics even many decades after he had come to the United States and after becoming a U.S. citizen. In particular, he spent the last year of his life working on making himself a better person, partner and parent. He loved deeply and was deeply loved, and his unexpected departure from this earth has left an immense empty space in the lives of his family and the community, especially the Salvadoran community in the United States and in his beloved El Salvador.
