Bill, as he was called by friends and loved ones, was born on December 15, 1941 in Quakertown, PA to the late Herbert and Catherine Skees Springer.
After growing up in Texas, Bill served in the U.S. Navy from 1959-1962 and was a Plane Captain in the western pacific on the air craft carrier USS Ranger. He was very proud of his service to our country as was his family. After his stint in the Navy, Bill met the love of his life, Lucy Carol Wright, in Arkansas and they were wed on April 18, 1965.
Prior to his retirement, Bill worked tirelessly in the garment industry as a pattern maker to provide for his large family of 5 sons and a daughter. Given his specialized vocation, advancing in his trade often meant moving to a new factory in a different town. He moved his growing family several times, including time in 8 different states, before finally settling in Pitt Co., NC. Many lifelong friendships were created along the way. He was a man of many talents and varied interests. He could fix or build just about anything. He raised various livestock from pigs, chickens, goats, rabbits, chinchillas and more. He always had a large garden with plenty of hands to make sure there was a substantial harvest to make it through the entire year with plenty to share with friends and neighbors. Bill also enjoyed hunting, collecting Indian artifacts and fishing - especially for crappie. He loved good stories, cookouts and making memories with family and friends.
Bill is survived by his wife, Lucy; his children David Springer and wife Paula of Ayden, Thomas Springer and wife Nirmala of Chandler, AZ, Richard Springer and wife Celia of Richmond, KY, Susan Jennette and husband Victor of Grifton, and Mark Springer of Greenville; his 18 grandchildren and a great grandson; his sister, Elaine Stankiewicz and husband Bob of Ashley, PA, and brother Leslie Springer and wife June of Sparta, TN.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Swank, and a son, William Hugh Springer.
The family would like to offer a special word of thanks to Gentiva Hospice Care who stepped in and stepped up during Bill's last days.
