She moved to Jal from Gladewater, TX with her parents at a very young age. She attended Jal schools and graduated in 1961. After graduation, she married the love of her life, Jimmie Louis Ellison, on August 24, 1961 in the Calvary Baptist Church in Jal. They celebrated 62 wonderful years together. Their son Mack was born in 1962 and Roy was born in 1964.
Her business career started at Dr. Ron Willard’s dental office in 1971 as a receptionist and dental assistant. She then worked for El Paso Natural Gas Co, Sid Richardson Energy Services, Southern Union, and Energy Transfer for 40 years before retiring in 2012 after many years at Jal #3 Plant. Besides being a dedicated employee, during these years she raised Mack and Roy, attended all their activities, cooked, kept an immaculate home and was active in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was also a Pink Lady at the Jal Hospital in the 60’s.
Jim was a big game hunter and Melba accompanied him on several safaris and other trips. She traveled to Egypt, went on safari with Jim to Australia, New Zealand, and Africa and one time came home with malaria as a souvenir of that trip.
She had an exceptional eye for color and style and was a wonderful interior decorator. She decorated their home and trophy room in African decor, and it looked like the cover of a home designer magazine. Melba loved going to South Texas on spring breaks with family and friends, attending Jal class reunions and taking Jal Gal trips to San Antonio and New Orleans. Other than spending time with her grandchildren shopping was her #1 activity, along with going to movies, reading, and watching John Wayne movies on TV.
Even though in later years Melba was plagued with severe arthritis she still had her sense of humor. She will be terribly missed by family, many friends and former colleagues.
Survivors are her husband: Jim of the home; son: Roy Ellison and his wife Teresa of May, TX; daughter-in-law: Shawn Ellison of Midland, TX; four grandchildren: Kylie Ellison of Odessa/Midland, TX; Justin Ellison and wife Briana of Greenwood TX; Braden Ellison and Beth of Austin, TX; Shayla Ellison and Colby of Ft. LaWana DeWees - October 19, 1955 - January 20, 2024

Departed: 01/20/2024 (Kermit)
Obituary Preview: LaWana DeWees (née Arnold) went to be with the Lord on January 20th, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas while surrounded by family & friends. She was born on October 19th, 1955, in Ganado, Texas to Barbara & Jack Arnold.LaWana attended Kermit schools from elementary through high school. She participated in many school activities such as band, drum major, and twirling. Her favorite, however, was volleyball. Her mother, Barbara, recalls a time when LaWana was unable to play volleyball in middle school due to illness. Once she recovered, LaWana’s drive & tenacity led to her making varsity her sophomore year despite being told that she would be incapable of playing. Her mother believes it’s that period of her life that gave her the drive to accomplish & conquer anything she put her mind to. After graduating from Kermit High School in 1974 she attended Southwest Texas State University. She married the love of her life Robert “Bob” DeWees on December 16th, 1978, in Midland, Texas. She worked for Bernie & Carol Bowden in the convenience store business for many years & became a part of their family. She also was a highly successful realtor who enjoyed helping families find their forever homes in Colorado. LaWana was blessed with a gentle spirit, & she was a tenacious champion of those she loved. The most important thing to LaWana was loving & caring for her family & she treasured spending time with them whenever possible. Her nieces & nephews can recount many memories spent at Aunt Daa & Uncle Bob’s house playing ping pong, around the world & dominoes, as well as the many summers that they spent going on camping trips. LaWana was also the epitome of a loyal friend & a source of wise, compassionate guidance to many. To be “adopted” by LaWana was to experience true, steadfast friendship like no other. Our Lawana loved big and lived big, no wasted time. We will miss her sweet voice & laugh, but her memory will forever inspire us to love one another better.LaWana leaves behind her husband, Bob DeWees of Rio Frio, Texas; mother, Barbara Arnold of Kermit, Texas; brother, Kevin Arnold (Jayme) Arnold of Kermit; beloved nieces and nephews, Dabney, Daegen & Kelsea, Ingmar, Ty, Angie, Bryan, Michaele, Mark & Gigi.
