From the outside, John may have seemed to have had a rough exterior, but those of us who were lucky enough to get to know him, know he was a big softy at heart. He was a hard worker, but he always played harder. He loved listening to rock music and was very passionate about anything with wheels. John was always the first to crack lewd jokes and make people laugh. Most of the time you could find him working on a car in his garage, helping a friend, or relaxing in his chair with Gretchen and Gemma at his side, and a Pepsi and a cigarette in hand.
John will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday April 1st, 2023, from 1 to 4 pm at the Marion Banquet Hall in Riverton, IL.

Basil was born in Phoenix, Arizona on January 15, 1941, to father Basil Periman and mother Fay Periman. The youngest by 9 years to three sisters, he often said he had four mothers. After losing his father at an early age, he, his mother, and sisters moved to Woodstock, Illinois where he attended Woodstock schools through High School. He was heavily involved in 4H and FFA, earning many awards.
After graduating, he went to work at a large hog farm. It was during this time he met his future wife, Mary in 4H. He was nineteen and she was fifteen. They were married December 20, 1963. He was drafted into the Army Reserves in 1962 and after being honorably discharged, went to work at another large hog farm until the farm sold.
In 1964 he went to work for Hartmann Farms where he was the farm manager for 23 years. This was a wonderful period in his life where they welcomed their daughter and twin sons. During this time, he was very involved with local youth agricultural organizations and mentored many kids. There was never a dull moment at the farm, and he enjoyed recounting fond memories with family and friends. He always had a strong sweet tooth but only liked two kinds of pie – hot and cold.
He was an avid cattleman who was loved and respected by his peers. Basil was involved with many agricultural organizations throughout his life and was exceptionally community minded. He was dedicated to his family, and his grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of his life. When they went to Papa’s, they knew either bull riding or football would be on TV, no matter if the event was current or years prior. He loved watching and knew all the stats on the bull riders, bulls, and bull fighters.

We faithfully believe Basil is checking cows in greener pastures and eating his favorite pie.
A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the person's passing, share details about their life, and provide information about funeral services or memorial events.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, accomplishments, and personality.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial contributions, or other ways to honor the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. Online obituaries can be longer and more detailed than those published in newspapers.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos of the deceased to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the person.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to reflect on their life and ensure that their story is told accurately. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in self-reflection.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while newspaper publications may charge by the word or line.

Can I make corrections to an already published obituary?

If you need to make corrections to an already published obituary, contact the publication or platform where it was posted. They will guide you through their correction process.

How long are obituaries kept online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some websites keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries can be a celebration of life, and humor can be an appropriate way to honor the person's personality and spirit.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member who knew the deceased well. Alternatively, many funeral homes offer assistance with writing obituaries as part of their services.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add meaning and context to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's values or personality.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the person's life that you're unsure about sharing publicly, it's best to err on the side of caution and omit them or discuss them with other family members first.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity or cause in lieu of sending flowers. This can be specified in the obituary.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you wish to keep the funeral private, you can still publish an obituary without including details about the service. This allows you to share news of the person's passing while maintaining privacy around the funeral arrangements.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain archives of past publications. Some genealogy websites also offer access to historical obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you want to republish an old obituary online, ensure you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder. You may need to obtain permission from family members as well.

What if I'm dealing with multiple deaths in a short time period?

In cases where multiple family members pass away within a short time frame, it's common to publish joint obituaries or combine them into a single notice.

Can I include personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Personal stories and anecdotes can bring warmth and humanity to an obituary, making it more engaging and memorable for readers.

How do I handle conflicting opinions about what should be included in an obituary?

In cases where there are differing opinions among family members or friends about what should be included in an obituary, try to reach a consensus through open communication and compromise.

What if I'm not sure what kind of tone to use in an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. If you're unsure, consider consulting with others who knew them well or seeking guidance from a funeral home or professional writer.
