Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also informing others of their passing. They can be a meaningful way to acknowledge the impact the person had on those around them and serve as a keepsake for family and friends.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, achievements, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral or memorial service details and any charitable organizations or causes that were important to the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends of the deceased, although some funeral homes or newspapers may offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for a length of around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos or other media in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements to enhance the tribute and make it more personal.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write an obituary before someone passes away?

While it's not common practice, some people do choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to reflect on their life and leave a lasting legacy. However, it's generally more common for family members or friends to write the obituary after the person has passed away.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites, contacting local libraries or historical societies, or reaching out to family members who may have kept a copy of the obituary.

This depends on the publication or platform where the obituary was published. Some may allow corrections or updates, while others may not. It's best to check with the original publisher for their policies.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, often including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional biographical information and context.

What if I'm struggling emotionally while writing an obituary?

Taking on this task can be difficult during a time of grief. Consider enlisting support from friends or family members, taking breaks when needed, and focusing on celebrating the person's life rather than dwelling on their passing.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?
