Tillie Hurd - March 13, 1927 - May 08, 2022

Departed: 05/08/2022 (Denver)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Tillie (Duran) Hurd passed away in her home in northeast Denver on Mother's Day, May 8, 2022, of natural causes. She was born March 27, 1927, to Santos and Barbara Duran of Vaughn, New Mexico.
Mrs. Hurd left Vaughn, New Mexico in 1948 to marry R.T. Hurd who was hired as Chef of Mt. Vernon Country Club on Lookout Mountain in Colorado. The young couple settled in Genessee in a small cabin. She soaked up as much fun as she could especially horseback riding in with her new friends that she made easily. The couple enjoyed going to Five Points in Denver for live jazz concerts. She fondly remembers all the good music and fun she had with her new husband the people she met.
When the young couple started a family they moved to Denver to a rooming house across the street from Cleaves Memorial CME Church on 22nd at Marion. That soon became too small for the growing family so the family moved to 3950 Walnut where the young children Manual, Helen, Teresa and Earbie Hurd could grow.
Mrs. Hurd became active in the Wyatt Elementary PTA offering to be a Room Mother and always helped with the various school fundraising projects. She was well known and liked by Mr. James Ward. This benefited her children all throughout their school years. In addition, she became a Cub Scout Den Mother in the Cole neighborhood for several years. She was an annual Mother’s March of Dimes Block Captain hosting the community in her residence in her new home on 35th at Vine. She was so proud to be raising money for the children in need.
As her children got older, she and Mr. Hurd decided to apply to be foster parents with Denver Social Services. Her first foster child was a little guy who was not expected to live. He had a very serious liver issue and was on a very strict diet and medical regiment. She nursed him back to life and he was able to be returned to his grandmother. This was a shining moment in her life. Her reputation of healing the little ones became known at Denver Social Services (DSS).
Soon after more, children followed. The house was full of anticipation as she and her husband welcomed a newborn biracial indigenous baby boy into the home. He came with no name and DSS said the new foster parents could name the baby. He became known as Little Jimmy. He too had severe medical restriction including not being able to digest milk. Mrs. Hurd fixed him oatmeal milk every day and he thrived. The couple became so attached to the baby they adopted him. Many more children came and went from the Hurd’s home.
In 1968 the family moved to a rental near City Park after the death of Mrs. Hurd’s mother in the Vine Street home. She took the death very hard and did not want to stay in the house where her mother died. So, they moved to a large duplex a block from City Park on 16th at Steele.
There they continued to raise the foster children and began to babysit the grandchildren that started arriving in 1968. The foster boys, Frankie, Tony and Bobby had been in the family for several years by then. With these young teens she enjoyed bike riding and going to City Park with her special boys. These young boys became Uncles to the arriving grandchildren of Mr. & Mrs. Hurd and continue this forever relationship in the Hurd family.
Mr. Hurd was twenty years older than Mrs. Hurd, so he decided to surprise her with a new house so when he passed, she did not have to worry about a home. One day he took her for a ride and pulled up to 3458 Vine Street. She asked why they stopped there, and he handed her some keys. Keys to her new home he purchased for her to live out her life when he passed. She did not know why he would move them back to the old neighborhood they had left a dozen years ago. He said it was because it was a corner lot, her dream lot. It was years later that she learned her sweetheart could not purchase a home outside the redlined district the banks and realtors had devised. She cried when she understood the impact of racism in the life of her late husband and how he never complained.
Mr. Hurd passed away in 1985. By that time the young boys she raised near City Park were gone from the home but not from her life. The home soon found a brother and sister who needed placement together. They are included in her forever foster children. She continued to mother these siblings until her death.
Mrs. Hurd was a lifelong Denver Broncos fan. She cheered for her team and cried when they lost. She hosted the Super Bowl parties at her home on 34th at Vine where all her kids and grandkids would gather to watch the games with her.
She was a longtime Catholic attending Annunciation Parrish for eighteen years and then Loyola on York Street. Both churches had bingo games and Mrs. Hurd never missed a bingo game in her church. She comes from a long line of bingo players as her brothers and sister in New Mexico also enjoyed the game.
Her life was lived well in northeast Denver. She raised her children in northeast Denver and her grandchildren. She has cared for hundreds of children from Denver. DSS awarded her a “40 year pin” in 2001 for her forty continuous years as a foster parent. That same year she adopted two teen siblings and raised them until they left home. She had a total of three adopted children and five forever foster children. Four biological children, seven stepchildren of Mr. Hurd’s, who called her Mama T.
She was also the neighborhood babysitter on Vine Street. Many young working mothers found a reliable babysitter for their children in her home. There are very many children that were safe as their mothers worked and she was affordable charging only what the mothers could afford. She became very attached to the children she babysat.
