Harold was born December 27, 1929 and raised in Clinton, Kentucky. He was married for nearly 67 years to the love of his life, Blanche. They had 6 children, 14 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. He passionately loved his family. He ended every conversation with “I love you. And, tell the others that I love them too”. Harold was a hard-working man. He was employed at Republic Steel and retired after 42 years of dedicated service. Harold was a man of faith and a long-standing member of Hessville Baptist Church. There he took on many leadership roles such as trustee, drove and maintained the church buses for many years, and was active until his passing. Harold was blessed with a memory that was sharp as a tack. He was able to remember details of travels and interactions with people down to small details, recalling locations and experiences with ease. His life was marked with many friendships. Everyone loved Harold Gene. He was a skilled mechanic, constantly working on someone’s car or a project. His hobby was the restoration of his most cherished Ford Model A and his John Deere Model B tractor.

Obituary Preview: Matulis, Charles Frederick, 83, of Highland lost his long battle with congestive heart failure on December 28, 2018. His Savior and the love of his life, Lucy, were there to meet him.
Charles was born in East Chicago, IN, to Charles and Julia Matulis on September 4, 1935. He attended Roosevelt High School in East Chicago, IN, graduating in 1953. He went on to attend the University of Michigan on a football scholarship from 1953-1957. He married his high school sweetheart, Lucy Balestra, on June 16, 1956, at Immaculate Conception church in East Chicago. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1957 with a degree in Economics. He went on to work for over 30 years in management at NIPSCO in Hammond, IN. He spent the last few years of his working life at Argonne National Laboratories in Lemont, IL.
Charles is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucy, his parents Charles and Julia Matulis, and his irreplaceable four-legged friend, Archie.
Charles will be forever missed by his surviving children, Mary (Gary) Heskett of Indianapolis, Roseanne Mallaro, Michael (Suzanne) Matulis, both of Medina, MN. Julianne (Ben) Brown of Westfield, IN. He is also survived by grandchildren Robert, Matthew, and Nicholas Heskett, Jack and Kara Mallaro, Nina and Maya Matulis, and Allison and Morgan Brown, who brought him the greatest joy. He was so proud of all of them. In addition, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Balestra, who was there for him unconditionally after the death of his wife. He is also survived by his siblings Margaret (John) Balazs, Ruth Homco, and Norbert (Karen) Matulis, and many nieces and nephews.
Charles, known to most as Chuck or Chuckles, was a jovial man who’s love for family was immeasurable. He cherished his annual fishing trips to Chief Lake with his son, brother, brother-in-law, grandsons, and nephews.
His second love was the Michigan Wolverines and there weren’t many days he wasn’t sporting Michigan apparel. He loved to cook, hunt, fish, watch sports, and enjoy a cold beer and a fine shot of Brandy.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 10:00a.m. at Fagen- Miller Funeral Home at 2828 Highway Avenue Highland, IN with a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Church in Highland, IN. Burial to follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Hammond, IN. Visitation will be Friday, January 4th, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. at Fagen-Miller.

Riordan and Estelle Urbanik. He was adopted by George Grindey as a teenager when Estelle married, and he attended Bowen High School in South Chicago in the 1950’s. He was preceded in death by his wife Judith in 2008, daughter Denise in 2017, mother Estelle in 1978 and his stepfather George in 1972.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving children: one son Daniel (Monica) Grindey of Portage, IN two daughters: Jennifer (partner: Matt Yunos) Herr of East Chicago, IN, and Deborah (Mark) Matlock of Highland, IN; four grandsons: Daniel Ryan Grindey, Jordan Grindey, Mathew Herr, and Gavin Matlock; four granddaughters: Sarah (Josh) Bennett, Mackenzie Grindey, Rebbecka Herr, and Hayley Matlock; and three great grandchildren: Thomas Cash III, Tahlia Bennett, and Tammy Bennett.
Ron served his country after high school in the United States Army and U.S. Army Reserve Corps, being stationed in Alaska, at Fort Lewis in Washington, and at Fort Huachuca in Arizona. He married Judith Zalaszewski in 1962 after his deployments, and was a retired steelworker from LTV Steel in East Chicago with 38 years of dedicated service.
Ron was a lifelong, diehard baseball National League and Chicago Cubs fan, a skilled poker and Pai-Gow player, crossword puzzle master, history buff, bowler, and all around professional sports enthusiast. He was the dedicated Rock of his family and he will be dearly missed by all.

Denise was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Elsie Wanicke.
A Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 9:30 am until the time of mass at 11 am at Our Lady of Grace Church 3025 Highway Ave in Highland. Private Entombment Holy Cross Cemetery.
Denise retired from Community Hospital, after 35 proud years of dedicated and loyal service as a Respiratory Therapist. She loved her work and she lived to help and take care of others.
Denise was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church and Altar and Rosary Society.
Her greatest joy was being a Mom and Nana, making frequent trips to Columbus, OH to surprise her grandkids.
Denise, “Dee,” “Dee-Dee,” “Korbel,” “Korbsy,” “Ma,” had a gift of making every person feel special and loved, and she touched so many lives. She had a true servant’s heart, always putting others above herself. She was known for her amazing cooking and baking, and her meals were loved by all. There are not enough words to describe the remarkable woman she was. Her life was led with integrity and her legacy will live on in those she loved.

William Charles Jantzen - March 11, 1929 - October 05, 2018

Obituary Preview: William Charles Jantzen passed away at the age of 89 on Friday, October 5, 2018 at Copper Trace Retirement home in Westfield, IN. He is survived by his faithful wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Louise (Erler) Jantzen, his brother Carl Jantzen and sister Patricia Shivley. Bill and Betty, as they are affectionately known, are parents to six children and their collective spouses, Jim and Amy Jantzen, Tom Jantzen, Judy and Gary Crawford, Lisa and Kevin Creighton, Bev and Darren Nathan, and Jenny and Eric Wright. They have sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren too numerous to name. Although Betty and Bill both have a high school education, all six of their children went on to graduate from college. God truly has blessed the Jantzen family.
Bill was born on March 11, 1929 in Calumet City, IL the son of Ernest and Helen Jantzen. He grew up in Hammond, Indiana graduating from Hammond Technical High School in 1947 where his love for basketball began. In 1950 he joined our Nation’s naval forces and served as a Third Class Petty Officer Electrician on the USS Fulton. He also was a key player on the ship’s basketball team. His fond memories of his time in service lived on as he faithfully attended Navy Reunions for many years in his retirement. He met the love of his life on a blind date. They soon married on September 19, 1954 and made their home in Highland, Indiana were they lived and raised their six children. Bill worked for US Steel as an electrical expert for 30 years. Upon his retirement, he took a position as a maintenance supervisor at Purdue Calumet where he worked an additional ten years. The Jantzen family often packed up their station wagon and pop-up camper to travel the country visiting almost 40 states. Bill was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. Most Tuesdays he enjoyed playing golf or dart-ball depending on the season. He was an Elder at Redeemer Lutheran Church where he and Betty faithfully served for many years. Every Sunday Bill corralled all six children in the front pew while Betty played organ in the balcony. Bill loved his family greatly and upon retirement he and Betty enjoyed traveling to visit all of their many grandchildren. Bill enjoyed fishing, sports, camping, and politics. He was a devoted Republican and enjoyed a spirited debate any chance he got. Bill was a faithful husband, father, and grandfather. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all.

Henryk finished trade school as an electrician and worked for US Gary Steel for 15 years. Later, he worked as a mechanic for United Airlines for 25 years before retiring in 2012. Henryk was married to Elzbieta Michalska for 48 years. He was preceded in death by his brother Tadeusz Czyszczon. Henryk is survived by his children: daughter Agnes (Mark) Nahnsen and Tom (Gail) Czyszczon; and cherished grandchildren Matthew, Alyssa, Daniella, Izabella and Mason. He is also survived by his brothers Stanislaw (Krystyna), Andrzej (Grazyna), Jan, Adam, Wladislaw, Franek (Halina) Czyszczon and sister Ania (Wladislaw) Biernat and many nieces and nephews; special sister-in-law Zofia Anuszkiewicz and many more family residing in Poland and in the US. Henryk was a proud Army veteran serving his country in the Vietnam War. A humble, quiet man, he was strong in his faith, he enjoyed his garden, playing pinochle, traveling, reading, working with his hands and coming up with clever inventions.
Visitation will be 9-11am on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018 at FAGEN-MILLER in Highland on 2828 Highway Avenue. The funeral services will follow the visitation at 11:30am at the Carmelite Monastery in Munster on 1628 Ridge Road. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville.

He was born on November 21, 1981, and was a 2000 graduate of Highland High School. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at Purdue University in aviation technology. Robert was employed in aviation at Chicago O’Hare airport. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and traveling. Robert will be forever remembered by his mother and father, Gary and Donna Ritz, his two sisters, Tonya (Seweryn) Sadura and Lauren (Daniel) Selo, and five nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his faithful Blue Heeler, Lulu. He was preceded in death by his younger sister Ashley Charlotte Ritz. Robert will be cremated and laid to rest beside his sister at Calumet Cemetery. There will be a private service for family only.
