Betsey W. Woolf - February 04, 1931 - February 24, 2024

Departed: 02/24/2024 (Rowley)
Obituary Preview: Betsey Wheatley Woolf, 93, resident of Brooksby Village Peabody, passed away February 24 while in hospice care.
Betsey was born on February 4, 1931, the daughter of John Reginald Wheatley and Alma Clark Wheatley. She was raised in Abington, Massachusetts and lived with her husband and children in Byfield, Massachusetts for close to forty years. Betsey graduated from Thayer Academy in 1949 and Mount Holyoke College in 1953.
She met Bob Woolf on a blind date arranged by dear friends Sidney and Susan Myers. They married on August 16, 1958. Their children are Emily Woolf Economou, Tim Woolf, and John Wheatley Harrington.
Betsey loved travel – a love that began with a college summer job at Yellowstone National Park that allowed her to hitchhike and explore the wilderness on her days off. That trip was followed by a drive across the United States with a group of friends. Decades later, she and her husband Bob traveled with good friends to Africa, Asia, Australia, and across much of Europe and the United States.
One of Betsey’s favorite trips was wandering through the English countryside exploring the gardens. Betsey loved her garden. For one Mother’s Day, she asked Bob to take the kids to the beach so that she could pull weeds. Later in life she wrote that she’d ask Bob to gather her children around her and forget about the flowers for a day. To this day, her children are the proud beneficiaries of her garden. Patches of Betsey’s grandmother’s peonies are thriving in Massachusetts, New York, Iowa, and Vermont.
When not traveling, Betsey was happiest with a delightful book in hand and a dog at her feet, or with a great bridge hand and a black-and-tan beer. Beware anyone taking on Betsey’s top notch bridge skills. She was forever grateful that Bob insisted she learn bridge as an agreement to their marriage.
Betsey loved working for the U.S. Postal Service sorting and delivering mail. She was the first woman to work at the Newburyport Post Office. She enjoyed her days talking with residents along her route while petting their dogs.
Betsey also served as president of the Newbury Garden Club, co-president of the Anna Jacques Hospital Aid Association, and president of the Lynn Sweet Adelines. She sang as long as her voice would allow.
She worked hard and volunteered often. But her greatest gift was her balance of humility and strength, which she used to offer the kind word, the respectful glance, the extra hand. Betsey loved cats as well as dogs. She took on many stray cats and dogs over the years, some of whom became famous for roaming her neighborhood and causing much mischief and laughter.
In her eighties, she wrote short stories about her life. One story included her stage debut as a 25-year-old. She was so worried that she’d miss a line. She studied so much that she gave up bridge, lost weight, and caused her doctor to become concerned about her health. But she persevered and only missed one line in each performance. Her doctor told her never to act again. She ignored his advice.
Betsey was especially close to her dear sister Sue and her dear brother Jack. She loved and was enormously proud of her entire extended family. Betsey is survived by her daughter Emily and husband John and their sons Robbie and Jared; her son Tim and wife Deborah and their children Jacob, Aspen (formerly Leah), and Mariana; and her son John and wife Janette and their son Justin. She is also survived by her loving sister, Sue and husband Elliott. She was predeceased by her husband Bob, her parents, and her brother Jack.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 9, at the Brooksby Village Chapel, 300 Brooksby Village Drive, Peabody, Massachusetts. Relatives and friends are invited. Lunch will follow the service, also at Brooksby Village.

Sarah Bergstrom - December 24, 1928 - January 07, 2024

Departed: 01/07/2024 (Rowley)
Obituary Preview: Sarah Jane “Sally” Bergstrom, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning, January 7, 2024 at Jefferson Manor in Brookville, Pennsylvania.  She lived a purposeful life full of faith, kindness, and devotion to others, and a joyful life, full of love, good health, and an appreciation of every day.
Born in Newton, MA, on December 24, 1928, to the late Maurice and Mildred (Levi) Reidy, Sally grew up in a happy home with her parents, five siblings, an aunt and an uncle. She was especially close to her brother, Roger, and sister, Judy. She attended Sacred Heart School through high school. A talented and dedicated pianist, Sally was accepted into the New England Conservatory of Music. Instead, she chose to enter a convent to become a nun.  While there she realized her true calling: To raise a big family while being a productive Catholic by serving others. Sally later attended secretarial school and went to work for The Architects Collaborative in Cambridge, MA, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
In her teens, Sally developed a passion for skiing, often traveling to the White Mountains with her brother, Roger. It was on the slopes of Cranmore Mountain in North Conway, New Hampshire that she met Carl Iver “Lindy” Bergstrom. Their shared love of skiing led to lifelong friendships, eventually an A-frame in North Conway and decades of enjoyment in the mountains.
Sally and Lindy married on August 1, 1953, and moved into a home Lindy built in Wilmington MA where they started a family. By 1960, they settled in Topsfield MA. Their strong marriage made 10 Grove Street a welcome hub for family and friends for over 40 years. Sally was a stay-at-home mom who enthusiastically raised 6 children, supporting our activities and dreams, reading to us nightly, keeping us engaged and life fun. As her children got a little older, she began fostering babies, first newborns and, later, neglected toddlers through Catholic Charities. Around-the-clock care of newborns somehow didn’t deter from the energy she had for the rest of us.  Later Sally became a home health aide bringing her thoughtful care to homebound members of the community. Eventually, Lindy needed full-time care, which she lovingly provided until his death in July 2009.
Sally was active at the St Rose of Lima Parish and St Vincent de Paul, quietly helping to feed and clothe those in need, assisting refugees, and making weekly visits to the then-state mental hospital to play cards and share comfort and laughs with patients. She taught catechism classes, attended mass daily whenever she could, and enjoyed assisting her friend, Dona, with the flowers at church. A voracious reader, she also volunteered at the Topsfield Library for years.
Still, Sally had time for fun. She was a lifelong walker, from 5 AM walks in her 20s, to walking miles around Topsfield several times per week, to participating annually in a 20-mile Walk for Hunger (until she was 80 when she decided she was too slow!), to daily walks around the “circle” at Washington Meadows in her nineties even, and especially, during winter, and finally in a wheelchair logging an amazing number of steps up and down the halls at her skilled nursing facility.  She created a legacy of hiking in the White Mountains which she shared with her children and others, who have passed it on to their children.  Sally and Lindy hosted several fun family reunions in their backyard for 50+ relatives that invariably ended with Sally and her siblings, nieces, and nephews singing acapella rounds with complex harmonies! In addition to skiing, she and Lindy enjoyed dancing, bicycling, and canoeing. She and her sister, Judy Brigham, remained best friends throughout their lives.  Watching birds at her birdfeeder made her happy and, maybe more than anything, Sally loved a good snowstorm.
Sally lived most of the last twenty-five years of her life at Washington Meadows in Topsfield where family and friends stayed in constant touch. Late in life, she was challenged by dementia but remained kind and generous until the end. It has been a comfort to know that her last couple of weeks were spent mostly sleeping with a smile on her face, rosary beads in hand, and in peace. She passed away on a Sunday morning during the year’s first snowstorm, a final gift to her children.
Sally is survived by six children, Deborah LaMarche and her husband Tim of Utah, Julia Bergstrom of California, Sarah Getzelman and her husband Brian of Utah, Amelia Baughman and her husband Robert of Pennsylvania, Martha Hanright of Templeton Mass, and Luis Bergstrom and his wife Kristen of Maryland, grandchildren, Spencer LaMarche, Emily (and Steven) Gill, Ashley Wylie, Kyle (and Shaina) Baughman, Bryce (and Mackenzie) Baughman, Bailey Bergstrom, Carlos Getzelman, Schuyler and Camden Bergstrom, great-grandchild, Harper Anne, and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her brothers, Robert, Maurice “Sandy,” Parker, and Roger Reidy, her sisters, Mary Sparks and Judith Brigham, her husband, Carl Iver Bergstrom, and son, Carl Albert Bergstrom.
The family gratefully thank our sisters, Martha and Amy, for the special care they provided to Mom in her last years, as well as the wonderful caregivers who kept her in her own home for as long as possible.
There will be a Visitation at 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 3 at St Rose of Lima Parish Hall (adjacent to the church), immediately followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 pm at St Rose of Lima, Topsfield, Mass.  Burial to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Topsfield, Mass.

Departed: 11/13/2023 (Rowley)
Obituary Preview: Dennis John Snow, 77, of Rowley, MA passed away peacefully on Monday, November 13, 2023, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, MA, just 7 houses down the road from his childhood home. Dennis was born on November 8, 1946, in Salem, MA to the late Helen B Szalkocoski and Everett F Snow. He was predeceased by his son, Tyler J Snow, his daughter, Cassidy M Snow, and his sister, Carol Morse. Dennis quickly transitioned into adulthood, as he welcomed his first-born daughter, Heather, into the world. Dennis was always articulate with his words and crunching numbers while maintaining his checkbook, and it is no surprise he completed 35 successful years working for the Internal Revenue Service. Through his employment, he gained many friends. He participated in golf leagues at Merrimack Golf Course in Methuen, MA, and made lasting memories with the gang. It was also through work where he met the love of his life, Linda, while away at a training class in Dallas, TX. He instantly knew the beautiful lady across the room was going to be his wife, and it did not take long for him to convince her to pack up and move across the country to start a loving life together.
Dennis married Linda on October 7th, 1990, and spent the next year building their beautiful house in Rowley, MA, which he took great pride in until his final days. Dennis enjoyed hanging his seasonal flags, keeping up with his flower beds and vegetable garden, and decorating his beloved property with antique trinkets he would find at local estate sales that he loved to frequent. In 1994, his daughter, Mackenzie, was born and in 1998, his daughter, Morgan, was born. As Dennis re-entered fatherhood, he found a passion in coaching. Not only did he cheer loudly with support on the sidelines but teaching his daughters and their friends the sports of soccer, basketball, softball, football, hockey, and golf, brought him tremendous joy. Dennis was a proud father of all three daughters and their successes.
Dennis had a love for food that he expressed easily through his home cooking and desire for a night out. This went hand in hand with his fun charisma for life and epic barn parties, celebrating graduations, Friendsgiving, Christmas, and of course the Kentucky Derby. His memories with family and friends are what brought a smile to his face every day.
Dennis was extremely grateful for all his medical care and the staff that supported him throughout his trying years. It is evident that his strength, will to fight, and perseverance are honorable characteristics that are representative of the nickname for himself, “Danvers High Man”. And at that he certainly was.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Snow, his daughters, Mackenzie Snow, Morgan Snow and Heather Goodwin (Ryan Goodwin), his grandson, Liam Goodwin, his sister, June St. Hilaire, his brother, James Snow, and many nieces and nephews.

William V. T. Boice - February 10, 1933 - May 20, 2024

Departed: 05/20/2024 (Rowley)
Obituary Preview: William Van Tassel Boice February 10, 1933 - May 20, 2024
Bill was born in North Egremont, MA where he lived and attended school until he joined the U.S. Army and shipped off to Germany. He was predeceased by his parents, Leigh V.T. and Louise Dellea Boice and his brother, Robert Boice.
Bill leaves his partner of many years, Carole M. Dowie, his son, Timothy, two daughters, Pamela and Suzanne, his sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia Boice Stoltz and Joseph Stoltz. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Philip, Alyssa, Jennifer and Jamie and 10 great grandchildren. Bill also leaves his good friends, Chrissy and Jack Wilkinson as well as many others who were an integral and important part of his life.
Bill was a supervisor with the Massachusetts Department of Natural Resources until his retirement, and because he was never one to just sit around, found many things to keep himself busy, whether it was teaching gun school, chauffeuring a friend back and forth to Canada on a regular basis, driving people to and from the airport, tapping Maple trees to make syrup, gathering honey from bee hives, planting his vegetable garden and keeping friends and family supplied with fresh eggs from his chickens. He was also active on the Poultry Committee at Topsfield Fair for many years. One of his closest friends, Chrissy Wilkinson, wrote: “I imagine now he is dressed in camo with a gun, hunting in the woods, or in hip boots at Castle Neck, gathering a few oysters, or better yet, back in uniform chasing a poacher hunting deer out of season. I find comfort in knowing he is once again able to be outdoors doing all the things he loved to do, pain free.”
Bill was a member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, so we are pretty sure he is pulling on his leather riding vest, hopping on the Harley and going out for one more ride with the guys.
There will be no services, his request was to have his ashes taken to the Green River on Boice Road in North Egremont--a small plaque will be added to the Boice Family Plot at Riverside Cemetery in North Egremont at a later date.
Should you wish to remember Bill with a charitable donation, here are a few suggestions. Of course, please feel free to choose your own favorite charity.
