Linn James Schofield III - March 07, 1938 - June 20, 2022

Departed: 06/20/2022 (Falls Church)
Obituary Preview: Colonel Linn. J. Schofield, III (AUSA, Retired) was called home on June 20th, 2022. A career military man, as per usual he left early and way ahead of schedule. He was born on March 7th, 1938, in Warrensburg, Missouri, to Linn J. Schofield, II, and Sara Frances (Spangler) Schofield. In the small town of Clinton, he was known as the little boy who would tote his pet duck Waddles around when his family ran Sunday errands. His love of animals would follow him throughout his life. A 1956 graduate of Shawnee Mission High School, he was a fan of planes, trains, and automobiles. Ever the hot rod aficionado, he would make bets with his children regarding the make and model of obscure hot rods they passed on the highway – he was never off by more than two years.
He graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, in 1960, with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Military Science. Of his college days, one of his favorite stories involved getting caught brewing beer in the closet of the off-campus bedroom he rented. It is unknown if his mother ever found out. He always valued the importance of balancing work and play. Upon obtaining his undergraduate degree, he received his commission in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant. He had fond memories of his service, specifically his assignments in France and Germany. He really knew his way around a croissant. While stationed in Germany, he and his friend Riley would often sneak in the General’s mess hall to get a taste of “the good stuff.” Like many men of his generation, he served in Vietnam. A member of Advisory Team 96, his last overseas tour was in Cambodia. He spent the remainder of his career at the Pentagon. He enjoyed bringing his children there on “Take Your Child to Work Day” so that they could clean out his tobacco pipes and play with the office supplies. Linn officially retired from the United States Army as a Colonel after more than 20 years of service. Later, he would retire again from civilian service with the Department of Defense. He found that one of the greatest perks of achieving the rank of O-6 was the special parking he got when he went to the Pearl Harbor Post Exchange. He would often explain that no such thing existed at Fort Myer where “O-6s are in abundance.”
He was a beloved and active resident of the Carlyn Square community in Falls Church, Virginia, for 50 years and a devoted member of Culmore United Methodist Church just down the road. He loved serving his friends and neighbors on various volunteer boards and committees.  For a time, however, his dream was to relocate to Hawaii upon retirement and become a shuttle bus driver at the Honolulu airport - until he realized how much of a hassle it was to move. Linn loved Hawaii, and he always shared that love with those around him - as evidenced by the infamous “Linn’s Handy Shortcut Guide to O’ahu” and the annual family parrot portrait postcard. He dutifully served on the board of Lifetime in Hawaii for over two decades, making numerous visits to inspect timeshare units and “assist” the management team. He tried to keep a running count of his trips to Honolulu but had to give up many years back.  If you were ever on a Continental or United flight to Honolulu and seated next to a gregarious Mai Tai drinking man in an Aloha shirt, chances are it was him. He never met a stranger.
Linn acquired a taste for German culture during his years of service in Frankfurt, ordering his beloved 1997 Gold BMW direct from the factory, grilling brats at the annual Carlyn Square Octoberfest, and always stalking the post-Christmas sales at the Fort Myer Exchange in search of discounted German holiday food and ornaments.
As a lifelong animal lover, he knew a good dog when he saw one. He would buy a package of odds and ends at the deli counter for his beloved dog, Mika. He loved all of his “grand-dogs” equally, though Jo always got the biggest piece of toast and Gibster always got first pick on where to sit on the sofa.
Through his first marriage, he is survived by his son, Stuart Schofield, of Houston, Texas. By his union to Sophaphan Schofield, he is survived by his son, Jesse Schofield, of Oakland, California, daughter Valerie Schofield, favorite grandson Bridger Yazdi, and his adoring cow, Darla, of Fulton, Missouri. Of all his titles, in his later years being Bridger’s Paw Paw was the most important. He is also survived by his niece Sara LaBerge, of Fletcher, North Carolina, and his doting sister Sallie Schofield, of Ogden, Utah. He was exceptionally close with his nephews, Don Roeun (Lorraine) of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Dan Roeun, of Aldi, Virginia. His long-time neighbors, the Flemings and the Langs, were especially dear to him. He was preceded in death by his parents Linn and Sara, and his youngest sister, Sherrill Schofield.
We will surely not forget someone who gave us all so much to remember. He was tremendously loved, and he will be tremendously missed.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 26th, at 10:00 am at Culmore UMC, located at 3400 Charles Street in Falls Church, VA.  Funeral services will be held immediately after beginning at 11:00 am and will be followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.

Emil Joseph "EJ" Dvorscak - March 16, 1936 - June 17, 2022

Departed: 06/17/2022 (Falls Church)
Obituary Preview: Emil Joseph (“EJ”) Dvorscak, 86, returned to the Lord on June 17, 2022.  Born in 1936 to John and Veronica Dvorscak, EJ grew up in Hazleton, PA as the youngest of four children and graduated from Saint Gabriel’s High School.
He went on to earn degrees from The Catholic University of America (Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, 1958) and The American University (B.S. Business Administration, 1967), and had a long career as an accountant and business manager.
He met his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth "Betty" (Maguire) Dvorscak, through the Catholic Young Adult Club (CYAC), where EJ was active in leading their Choraliers. CYAC was organized to provide Christian fellowship and promote participation in parishes through religious, social, cultural, social service, and recreational activities for single Catholics between the ages of 18 and 35. One of CYAC’s recreational activities was a play, Frontier Fantasy, where Betty Maguire – dancer and set designer – met EJ Dvorscak, show producer and director. Their wedding on June 13, 1964, at Saint James Church was officiated by Betty's brother, a Jesuit priest. It was the beginning of a life-long ministry, devoted to each other and the needs of Saint Anthony of Padua parish.
EJ was a man of service. He selflessly gave his time and talent in a variety of roles for the parish for 60 years. He was the parish sacristan, coordinated the lectors, trained altar servers, chaired the finance committee, replaced the sound system in the church, and served in many other unseen ways that improved the worship experience. EJ arrived by 6:30 a.m., seven days a week, year in and year out, for many decades, to open the church for morning prayer and prepare for the 7:00 am Mass, just one example of his love for the Church and each parishioner.
EJ loved music, reading, and gathering with his friends and the people he served. He was a catalyst for creating engagement within the parish community, leading the way for Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations, the annual celebration of the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua (which happened to coincide with his wedding anniversary) and many other gatherings, large and small. He was famous for his interactive quizzes, games and skits to help people get to know each other. Engaging with and celebrating the parish community was his heart. He will be greatly missed by his St. Anthony of Padua parish family.
EJ is preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Dvorscak; parents, John and Veronica Dvorscak; brothers, John and wife Doris, Bernard and wife Carolyn; sister Bernardine and husband Joe Magnus, and half-sisters Mary Mokal, Irene Thompson, and Elizabeth (Betty) Kubert. He is survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins, including Holly Hunter, Joan Paucke, Debi Burns, Sharon Johnson, Kim Nine, Ann Salazer, Joseph Magnus, Peter Dvorscak, Mike Dvorscak, Greg Magnus, Richard Thompson, Gerald Thompson, Kathleen Hoch, Marianne Kubert, Edward Kubert, Joseph Kubert, Kathy Hoch, and other loving family.

Garnet Marie Odell - December 06, 1927 - June 10, 2022

Departed: 06/10/2022 (Falls Church)
Obituary Preview: A giver of love and knowledge, Garnet “Gigi” Marie Fike Odell, 94, formerly of Washington, DC and Columbia, SC,  passed away on Friday, June 10, 2022, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Falls Church, VA. Born on December 6, 1927, in Uniontown, PA,  Gigi lived and worked in New York City for a brief time, and spent the rest of her professional career as a civilian serving at the Pentagon, where she met her adored husband and love of her life, Robert Elsmere Odell, (SC).  Upon Bob’s retirement from the U.S. Department of Defense (DARCOM), they moved to Columbia, SC.
Throughout the course of their marriage, Gigi and Bob, as they were known by all, sought to bring happiness and kindness to friend and stranger alike.  Local children and adults who were lucky enough to encounter them at Christmastime, when they lovingly dressed in character, could have no doubt that there really was a Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Gigi was muse, companion, and crucial co-conspirator in Bob’s artistic pursuits— be it in creating exquisite miniature soldier sculptures, portrait paintings, or stunning nature photography, especially of cats and flowers. Family memories of Gigi and her sister Fran chatting and giggling into the night about (but not limited to)  history, politics, science, space exploration, and archaeology continue to bring smiles.  Gigi’s beauty, wit, charity and intelligence remained with her until the last.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents Herbert Norman Fike and Alice Brill Fike Nycum, (PA); sister Frances M. McCaffrey and husband Col. John E. McCaffrey, (VA); brother-in-law Gen. John S. Wieringa (SC); sister-in-law Mary Odell Jackson and husband Eli Jackson (KY); and niece Irene LaSalle Jackson Howard (KY).
Survivors include her niece, Jo Anne McCaffrey Busnardo and husband José, (Brazil); niece Diana A. McCaffrey and husband David B. Rivkin, (VA); nephew John E. McCaffrey Jr., (VA); nephew Kevin R. McCaffrey and wife Roberta, (FL); two great nieces Alice Busnardo, (Brazil) and Diana F. McCaffrey, (FL);  and two great nephews Joao Busnardo, (Brazil) and Taylor McCaffrey, (VA);  sister-in-law Barbara Wieringa, (SC); niece and namesake Gigi Wieringa, (SC); nephew John Wieringa (OH); niece Wendy Million (VA); niece Robin Jackson (SC); niece Emily “Boo” Collins (SC); nephew Eli Jackson (KY); niece Becky Edwins (KY); dear friends Irene Alda Cedras (SC) and Hattie Gause (SC); and several great great nieces and nephews and other devoted family members, friends and neighbors.

Janet Kotler - December 20, 1944 - June 07, 2022

Departed: 06/07/2022 (Falls Church)
Obituary Preview: Janet Kotler, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, passed away on June 7, 2022 at the age of 77.
Janet was born on December 20, 1944 in Moscow, Russia (at the time, the Soviet Union) to Henry and Esther Rigerman, two idealistic American expatriates. In 1987, Janet traveled to New York to visit Esther, who had returned home in the meantime. Disillusioned with Communism and energized by her first glance of life outside the Iron Curtain, Janet went on to conquer geopolitics and the bureaucracies of two countries to bring her husband and daughter to America.
She worked for many years at the Washington Processing Center (later, the Refugee Processing Center), a contractor to the U.S. State Department. To her last day, she keenly felt the irony and the blessing of making a career in helping others immigrate to the United States.
Janet found joy in traveling, good food, photography, classical music, but above all, in human relationships. She loved people -- including her grandchildren, her newfound American family and her friends, old and new.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Vladimir Kotler. She is survived by her daughter, Marie (Masha) Cochran, her husband Dewey, and their three children: Jacob, Sara and Danny, as well as by her brother Arie Leib Rigerman and family.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 12, 2022, between 1-3 pm, at the Everly Funeral Home in Falls Church, VA.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing to those who care about them. They can also help families and friends share memories and condolences with one another.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or memorials in lieu of flowers.
