Frank John Rion - September 25, 1959 - March 01, 2024

Departed: 03/01/2024 (Anchorage)
Obituary Preview: Frank J. Rion AKA Siegfried Von Rion was born in Maryland in an Military Base hospital on September 25th 1959. The oldest of three siblings. The family moved to several military bases along the way and finally settled in Alaska after being stationed in Germany and other bases around the world until the family moved to Alaska in 1970 and settled in close to the military base.
He graduated from Bartlett High School in 1977. He was an officer in the Army ROTC program and the Society for Creative Anachronism, (Renaissance Faire events) Some of his friends report going to see the first Star Wars film at the old Denali Theater, that would help explain the he way he seemed to be from “a galaxy far far away” at times. He had a passion for gaming and science fiction and military strategy. He also developed a strong interest in computers during the years he worked at MLS and had a natural ability to solve data base problems with an organic approach that baffled many experts. His love for literature made him a perfect fit for bookstore manager for a national chain. He enjoyed gaming and science fiction, he traveled to many out of state conferences where he collected art work He used his imagination to stay in the present, and as he said of spirituality & his belief in God “It is more important that She believes in me, than I believe in God.“
So I guess deep down in his heart of hearts he was a feminist, and after his stroke in 2008 he applied his passion for service to getting an associates degree in Geriatrics’ from UAA while volunteering for organizations (Older Persons Action Group, the Alaska Regional Auxiliary, and Adult Protective Services) that helped people in need during his own recovery.
He worked through the State of Alaska Department of Vocational Rehabilitation to become independent, and transition off disability to full-time employment in 2014. His employment counselor brought him over to Access Alaska as a volunteer where he secured a position (thanks to Jim Beck and Loren Abbey for creating the position) and stayed from 2015 until 2024 at the time of his passing. His unique and caring personality touched many people seeking services. Even though he may have seemed gruff at times, he was a very caring individual and he expressed his frustration in not being able to give people exactly what they needed in a manner that many misinterpreted. He really was a big teddy bear that just wanted to help everybody. He chose to live independently, and he made the decision to exit at a time when his body wasn't giving him the support to serve in the independent capacity he had carved out. The great staff at Providence Hospital
Palliative care gently allowed him a gracious and meaningful transition to the other side of the veil.
His parents passed away before him.
He is survived by his 2 sisters, Kim Rion of Anchorage Alaska and Kerry Desautels , as well as the many friends that are fortunate enough to have known him.
Donations on his behalf can be made to Access Alaska, Providence Foundation, Alaska Public Media, the Anchorage Fire Department EMTs, ATLA, OPAG, AKEELA Inc., Alzheimer’s Disability Resources Agency or any other agency that serves people in need.

Margaret Ann Duggan - August 13, 1948 - January 30, 2024

Departed: 01/30/2024 (Anchorage)
Obituary Preview: Margaret Duggan passed away quietly while surrounded by her loving family on January 30, 2024. She was born in 1948, grew up in David City, Nebraska, and was the oldest of seven children.
She earned degrees from Duchesne College, Creighton University and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Nebraska. She became a Registered Dietitian.
Margaret met and married a gawky but promising Creighton Law School student, Jack Duggan. First stop on their married life was Washington, D.C. where they enjoyed Appalachian hikes and canoe trips. They next moved north to Alaska where Margaret started as the state dietitian visiting bush villages. Later, she worked as the Anchorage School District nutrition head, Head Start Nutrition Director and Manager for the Anchorage Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. We are especially proud of her decades-long work advocating for mother and child nutrition.
A one-in-a-million mother, Margaret made sure her three children learned the importance of helping people in need. They often traveled along on volunteer food deliveries. She showed them empty cupboards and helped them understand how fortunate they were. She never missed their soccer games, 6AM hockey practices, or school functions TIMES THREE. She was fiercely proud of her children, their well-chosen spouses, and six absolutely perfect grandchildren. Those grandchildren were her true joy. Saying goodbye at her deathbed, the grandkids repeated how much they loved her and performed a last “dance party” just like the close of every Sunday family dinner. Charles Leslie Young - May 18, 1939 - December 28, 2023

Departed: 12/28/2023 (Anchorage)
Obituary Preview: Charles (Chuck) Leslie Young, age 84, passed away on December 28, 2023, in Anchorage, Alaska. He was born in Dayton, Ohio on May 18, 1939 to Jesse and Aurilla Young, and the brother of Patricia Young Simon, his beloved sister.
Chuck heard the call to become a United Methodist minister early in life. He gave his first homily when he was 6 years old during a school assembly at Allen School in Dayton, Ohio - much to the mortification of his older sister. At 14 his preaching skills were recognized by the local United Methodist Conference and he began his life-long vocation as a United Methodist minister.
Chuck attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, majoring in Pre-Theology, with minors in Greek and German.
On the first day of Religion 101 class, he noticed a beautiful girl and in a very suave move, asked to borrow a quarter for coffee. She loaned him the money, thus beginning a romance that lasted 60+ years - despite the fact she never got her quarter back. Chuck and Gerry Arleta Sexton fell in love and married June 17, 1961 after both graduated from Ohio Wesleyan. Chuck then attended Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Chuck and Gerry welcomed their daughter Allison Anne in 1963, and their son Christopher George in 1965. Chuck completed his Master of Divinity in June 1966 and was appointed to Harlem United Methodist Church in Rockford, Illinois. While at Harlem, Chuck became very interested in prison ministry; from 1969 to 1973 he served as the Director at Genesis House for Released Convicts in Rockford, Illinois. In 1973 he was appointed to the four churches of the North Boone Parish in northern Illinois.
Chuck and Gerry’s dream of living in Alaska came true in 1978 when Chuck was hired as the Campus Minister for the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). Chuck loved his work as campus minister – leading student worship services and student events on campus, and working with UAF faculty and staff. His 3rd story office in Constitution Hall was marked by helium balloons flying out the office window. Chuck developed and taught a “Basic Bible” class. He organized two campus social action groups: A Time for Peace and Mustard Seed for those interested in peace and social justice. He also met with other student faith groups to learn from them and to encourage and support them as UAF students. He saw his ministry as a more than a call to Christianity – it was also a call to all those seeking discussions of faith and faith journeys, and more simply, as fellow humans on the same journey he was.
In 1995 he was appointed to the Sitka United Methodist Church. He and Gerry moved to Sitka and immediately bought the Arcos, the sailboat of their dreams. They loved their life in Sitka, becoming part of community life and making many friends. In 2001 Chuck retired from ministry. He and Gerry moved to Cooper Landing, Alaska – a place they loved since first visiting the area in 1979. Chuck and Gerry designed their dream home and loved life there. The dream home was also perfectly located so that Chuck had the opportunity to fish almost every day of the year (a lifelong dream) and Gerry had the opportunity to draw, paint, sew, and read to her heart’s content. Chuck and Gerry celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June 2011 with friends and family from all over Alaska celebrating with them in Cooper Landing. In 2012, Chuck and Gerry moved to Chester Park in Anchorage. Gerry died on March 27, 2017 from Lewy Body dementia.
Chuck continued to live at Chester Park to be near family and friends. He met Lela Sanders there and they were married June 10, 2018 at St. John United Methodist Church in Anchorage. Their honeymoon was a trip they both longed to take - a cruise through the Panama Canal. Chuck made sure that people knew they were on their honeymoon cruise and they were toasted and congratulated many times. Cruise highlights included stops in the Florida Keys and horse drawn carriage rides through Charleston, South Carolina’s historic neighborhoods. After the honeymoon, Chuck and Lela settled into married life, continuing to live at Chester Park. They kept busy doing their favorite things: drives to see the fall color in Hatcher Pass and on the Kenai Peninsula, whale watching trips to Beluga Point, and visits to family and friends in Anchorage, Wasilla, Palmer, Eagle River, Indian, Cooper Landing and Soldotna. They were incredibly lucky to have a trailer site at the Sunrise Inn in Cooper Landing, courtesy of longtime friend Arden. They kept the trailer in Cooper Landing year-round so they could visit friends on the Kenai as well as simply being immersed in an area they both loved. One of their favorite things was to spend time with Lela’s children and their family at the Elledge/Oakley family fish site on Cook Inlet.
Chuck leaves behind his wife, Lela Joye Young, his children Allison Young McLain and Christopher George Young, his son-in-law Barron McLain and daughter-in-law Carla Young, and grandchildren Theo McLain, Ellie Young and Roscoe Young. He is survived by his sister Patricia Simon, her husband George, and their children David Michael, Karen and Susan, as well William and Debbie Lower. He is also survived by Lela’s three sons, her daughter, their families, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jim and Diane Elledge, Ron and Linda Elledge, David and Pam Elledge, and Susan and Ray Oakley.
Allison McLain expresses deep gratitude to the Alaska United Methodist Conference ministers who attended Chuck’s memorial service and those who participated on-line – thank you for honoring his dedication, his work, and the friendship he had with each of you. Special thanks to St. John United Methodist staff who supported the memorial service. Your love and respect for Dad shone through in the grace and peace of his service. For those wishing to make donations in Chuck’s memory, contributions may be made to Southern Poverty Law Center (https://support.splcenter.org) or Bread for the World (https://give.bread.org).

Alfred Getty, III - July 13, 1954 - December 24, 2023

Departed: 12/24/2023 (Anchorage)
Obituary Preview: Alfred William Getty III, a loving family man and proud Veteran of Anchorage, AK, passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2023, at the age of 69 on Joint-Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, AK.
Alfred was born on July 13, 1954, in Middlesex, New Jersey, to Irene and Alfred Getty Jr. As a child of a military family, he moved frequently and received most of his early education in Germany. He graduated from Monadnock High School in 1972. He immediately entered the Army, which was his intended plan from boyhood to follow in his father’s and many other family member’s footsteps. He was a devoted serviceman who truly enjoyed serving his country to the fullest. Using his GI Bill, he started college courses in various subjects. He particularly enjoyed studying History and gained a deep knowledge of world history and its details. He spoke five languages in various capacities: English, Russian, German, Spanish, and Korean. He rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class and was commissioned to become a Warrant Officer at the time of medical discharge due to Multiple Sclerosis (MS). After his military discharge and his MS condition improved, he joined the US Postal Service until his physical condition prevented him from continuing.
He then took on mastering oil painting, basket weaving, and wood carving, leaving some notable heirlooms for his family.
Alfred was a devoted husband and father with a strong work ethic. He instilled early on in his daughter and his grandson the importance of being ready and showing up early to appointments and work – to show respect to others and gain self-confidence. Alfred battled many different health complications for most of his life but always put his family first. He was known as “Mindie’s Dad,” a role he cherished, and in 2007 proudly took on the title of Grandfather. He carried on the nurturing role for his grandson, often working on study guides after school or going over their coin collection together. Alfred was not the most talkative person and sat off to the side in crowds, but to those privileged to know him, he was funny and caring. Alfred will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 11 am, followed by a military burial service at 1 pm at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery and a reception at 1:30 pm at China Lights.
Alfred is survived by his wife, Key Getty; his only child, daughter Mindie Getty; his grandson, James William Getty; brother-in-law, Harold Manning; nephews, William Manning and Christopher Manning.

Departed: 12/20/2023 (Anchorage)
Obituary Preview: Carolyn Henderson was born November 27, 1951 in Anchorage, Alaska to the late Carl M. Henderson and Gloria W. Douglas Henderson. Carolyn always credited herself with pride as being the second black (non-military) born in the original Providence hospital. Carolyn was a graduate of East Anchorage High.
Carolyn loved her family and often kept in contact with local family members and those living outside the Alaska area. If you were blessed to be Carolyn’s friend, you were a friend to the end. It was very important for her to keep in touch with people she had known and grown up with.
Carolyn was adventurous and free spirited, often dancing to her own music. She loved nature and enjoyed photographing wildlife, sunsets and Alaskan scenery. She enjoyed growing plants and flowers. Later in life she had a passion for gardening and took pride in showing off her fresh vegetables.
Carolyn’s career started right out of high school, and she was fortunate to be one of the first minorities hired by Carr’s Gottstein at that time. She worked on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline for several years as a Teamster in Valdez. She also worked at Gary King’s Sporting Goods as an office manager. Her adventurous spirit and love for nature soon took her to Kodiak, Alaska where she lived and worked for a few years. She returned to Anchorage and was a primary caregiver for her mother who was battling cancer. From there, she was faced with also caring for her mother’s two sisters. She was a significant caregiver for her aunt, Thelma Brinson, as she walked down the path of Alzheimer's Disease until her death.

As Tari’s family grew, she loved and had the love of his children, being named Grandma and Great Grandma Carolyn. Many years later, the love story resolved as a platonic relationship. The friendship between the families lasted until her passing. She would often say she felt so blessed and they completed and fulfilled her life as a mother.
