Davene M Whaley - July 12, 1948 - April 15, 2022

Departed: 04/15/2022 (Gloucester City)
Obituary Preview: Some people just inspire happiness wherever they go. Wherever the fun was, Davene M. Whaley (nee Lewis) made the day a little brighter. She loved her job and worked hard for her boss.  She was thoughtful, loving, and very proud of her two daughters. We adored her as our world,  a loving mother, and doting grandmother who most definitely spoiled her grandsons as well as her dog Emmy.
When we think of Davene, we think of something beautiful. All you need is faith, trust, and a little bit of pixie dust, Davene definitely loved Disney. If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever. The sun had set in the early evening of Friday, April 15, 2022, and it was the last day we could be together. Davene passed away unexpectedly, during a brief hospital stay at the age of 73 at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
One gift, above all others… one that knows no time, no place, and one gold cannot measure. The precious, poignant, tender gift of life – that, will keep our dear ones ever living on even though they sleep. No one knows what awaits us on the other side. Our highest tribute to Davene is not grief, but gratitude from those who will receive her gifts.  Davene was an organ donor and gave the gift of sight to two families.  Even after death, Davene continued to give.
Davene was born in Woodbury and spent all of her years as a Holy City neighbor. She was a graduate of Gloucester High, class of 1966, and made her career working at the Camden County Board of County Commissioners for over 20 years. Davene had her “club” and kept in touch with high school classmates, enjoying taking the fun on the many “girl trips”. At home, she loved to bake and took over the tradition and recipe of the family’s homemade fudge.
To the world Davene, you may have just been a mother, but to your family, you are our world. She is survived by her daughters; Stacey & her husband Rich Dobleman and Amy & her husband Scott Whitelock. Davene was crazy about her grandkids and is the proud grandmother of; Mathew, Samuel, Timothy, Andrew, Ryan, Jake and Aidan. She is also survived and will be sadly missed by her brother David & his wife Barbara Lewis as well as her faithful, little furry companion “Emmy”. Davene was predeceased by her brother, the late Ronald Lewis. Relatives, friends, and neighbors are invited to gather with the Whaley family. We’ll be sharing our heartfelt stories between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm at Creran Celebration Etherington & Creran Funeral Homes 700 Powell St., Gloucester City where a remembrance ceremony will be celebrated by Pastor, Rev. Debra Conner at 3:00 pm. Inurnment will be held privately. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper 2 Cooper Plaza, Camden, NJ 08103 www.cooperhealth.org #crerancelebration #heartfelt © 2022 Creran Celebration LLC. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to pay their respects.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, ranging from 100 to 500 words. However, some online obituary platforms may allow for longer tributes.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most essential information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Some newspapers may charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary?

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries are usually published immediately, while printed obituaries may take several days or weeks.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer to keep the obituary private, you can opt for a private online memorial or request that the funeral home or publication limit access to certain individuals.
